To us, it has been the start of our senior year in high school. To the world, it has been a time of significant changes and scientific advances. Soon, we, as graduating seniors, are going out into that world. Let's take a look at some of the changes. John F. Kennedy, the first Roman Catholic to achieve the honor of becoming President, took office as the thirty-fifth President of the United States in January of 1961. President Kennedy's New Frontier , as his administration has come to be known, set up a group known as the Peace Corps to strengthen our relations with other countries. Sam Rayburn, the man with the longest term as Speaker of the House of Representatives, died at his home in Texas with cancer. The glittering world of entertainment was saddened by the deaths of the King , Clark Gable, Ernest Hemingway, Ward Bond, and James Thurber. Ben-Hur , A Summer Place , Exodus , The Guns of Navarone , and the re-release of Gone With the Wind were the top movies. The books most widely read were THE UGLY AMERICAN, THE STATUS SEEKERS, HAWAII, EXODUS, ADVISE AND CONSENT, and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. The teenagers were learning the Twist, the Stomp, and the Fly. The songs they were dancing to included The Fly , Big John , A Summer Place , Blue Moon , Exodus , Mack The Knife , and many others. The major advancement in science was the launching of a man into space. The U.S.S.R. was first with Yuri Gagarin and the United States followed with Alan Shephard. This step-up in the space program was the result of the cold war between Capitalism and Socialism. Besides the development of manned space flights, other achievements include the Polaris submarine and the larger bombs. While nations are busily completing their nuclear arsenals for protection, heart disease remained the number one killer. This was also the year of a heightening of world tension as the Soviet Union and the United States fought a war of words for world supremacy. The Soviet Union continued nuclear testing in the atmosphere and exploded the largest bomb to date, a fifty megaton bomb equal to 50 million tons of dynamite. East and West Berlin became the headline topic when the Communists built a wall dividing the city. Laos, North Vietnam, the Congo, Red China, Kuwait, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and South Korea have also been major trouble spots of the world this year. The United Nations, man's hope for peace, suffered a severe blow from the death of Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold in a plane crash. The New York Yankees won the World Series Pennant, winning four games to one over the Cincinnati Redlegs. The Green Bay Packers took the National Football League championship. The National Heavyweight title changed hands several times this year with Floyd Patterson finally securing it by defeating Ingemar Johansson in a return match. So comes to an end the year of 1961. But what of future years? We cannot predict with certainty the outcome of tomorrow, but we can insure it to some extent by preparing ourselves and those who come after us for the destinies we must face. $UMOU LEFT TO RIGHT: Louis Benge, Sergeant-at-Arms; Jane Foster, Treasurer; Martha McClellan, Secretary; Brenda Hafley, Vice-President; David Cornelius, President. r ; . $ ff O' r ,r David Adkinson Connie Arnold Anne Barnett Sharon Bechtel Louis Benge Brennan Boswell Russell Brown David Bruner Mike Bugg Huston Burkhead Jim Chris Bums Jayola Camic Don Cochran Bill Conover David Cornelius Donna Cornelius Brenda Cummins Georgia Drury Jackie Dunning Viatta Durr Jane Foster Diane Frederick Jerry Freeman Brenda Hafley David Hardin Joyce Leonard Jim Ed McClellan Martha McClellan Donnie McCrosky Irene McGuire Dixie McRay Billy Miller Ronnie Million Chuck Peters Eddie Purdom Kelly Scott Reed Linda Reul Vivian Royalty Penney Sanders Donnie Sea David Sebastian Glenna Shotwell Roger Sims Ansel Smith Donald Smith Omega Spencer Jane Sullivan Linda Terhune Freida Walters NOT PICTURED Linda Curtsinger Alice Gibson Glenn Ellen Grigsby Billy Hayslett Bobby Holiday William Kendrick Don Long Ann Parker Jim Patrick Floyd Shirley Donna Teater — Sopkomom Robert Alford Richard Allison Keith Anness Sandra Arnold Gary Barkman Larry Barnett Mary Black Judy Bodkin James Browning Judy Browning Lloyd Browning Patricia Brummett Billy Brummett Phyllis Bryant Danny Bugg V LEFT TO RIGHT: jfly Brummett, Treasurer; Dixie Moore, Vice-President; Sherrill Smart, Secretary; |iarry I rnett, President.
