Our class members have taken part in all school activities and have been as well behaved and mannered as any class ever to enter these hallowed halls of HHS. Despite this fact, fourteen teachers and one principal have resigned. Graduating with us, we find sixteen original members of the class. These being: Doris Coovert, Cora Ann Bourne, Rose Marie Cotton, Geneva Lawson, Shirley Rice, Marie Trisler, Norvin Bourne, Bobby Clark, Mac” Davis, Glendon Demaree, Billy Hatchett, Bill McClellan, Bill Zody, Jim Patterson, John Shewmaker and Kenneth Scrogham. During our freshman year we elected as our officers, Norvin Bourne, President, Doris Coovert, Vice President, Pat Prewitt, Secretary, and Kenneth Scrogham, Treasurer. Our sponsers were Mrs. Ammie Alexander and Mrs.’ Betty Nicholas. Kenneth Scrogham, President, Rose Marie Cotton, Vice President, Jackie Leonard, Secretary, and Betty Jean Jackson, Treasurer were chosen as our class leaders in our Sophomore year with Mr. Blucher Allen and Mrs. William Arensman as sponsers. We entered our Junior year with big hopes and ambitions. Bill McClellan was elected President, Elvin Carey, Vice President, Betty Jean Jackson, Secretary, and John Shewmaker, Treasurer. Under our three act comedy,' The Perfect Idiot , treated the seniors to a lake outing, took buses to and handled concessions at the ballgames.’ With the guidance of Mr. Marshall Black and Mrs. Martha Raymer, our senior year has been by far the busiest. With the re-election of Bill McClellan as President, Betty Jean Jackson as Secretary and the addition of Jim Patterson, Vice President and Morris Wright, Treasurer we set the course for this final lap of our ,ourney. Early in the year we began work on our annual with Cora Ann Bourne as editor-in-chief supported by a dependable staff of hard working seniors. It was in November that the class took a forward step and held the first class-sponsored dance in the gymnasium. With the aid of the P.T.A. the event was a huge success. It was on April 2nd that our hopes, dreams, and plans materialized, for it was on this date the class embarked on a trip to Washington D.C. After a two day tour of the interesting sight of our national capital an excited class returned home early Easter morning. Immediately after our return we started working on our senior play. With the experienced coaching of Mrs J. P. Williams, we presented a successful three act play. No sooner had the curtain fallen than we began preparing our Baccalaureate, Class Night, and Graduation programs. These brought to conclusion our class activities of our high school days. Football players in our class were Eugene Motley, Jim Patterson, Billy Simpson, Connie Drury, Curtis Ransdell Jay Lee McGinnis, Bruce Bottoms, Jackie Leonard, Morris Wright, Bobby Vandiver, and Bobby Clark On the Harrodsburg basketball squad we had Bill Zody, Jim Patterson, Connie Drury, Bobby Cloyd Billy Simpson, Morris Wright and Norvin Bourne. Marching with the Blue and White we found Brennan Royalty, Norvin Bourne, Elvin Carey Bobby Clark Kenneth Scrogham, Glendon Demaree, Charles Bonta, Mac Davis, Joyce Royalty, Norma Jean Keller and Betty Jean Jackson. Fellow classmen in the Patrol were Elvin Carey, Connie Drury and Bennie Yates. Representing our class on the student council were Cora Ann Bourne and Curtis Ransdall for all four years in high school. Members of our class now serving in the Armed Forces are Billy Arnold and Frank Wiley. Frances Robinson and Bill McClellan SENIOR CLASS POEM The Senior Class is leaving H. H. S. All of us are in much distress. We hate to leave the students so fine, For they treated us nice and very kind. And the teachers, superintendent, and principal, too. And this fine old school, here’s to you. We have to go, as it’s a strict rule, That after the twelfth grade, we leave school; But please remember the Senior Class of 1953, For loyal, honest, and friendly, we'll always be. By Marie Trisler SCHOOL SONG We're loyal to you, H. H. S. We’re steadfast and true, H. H. S. We'll back you to stand, 'eainst the best in the land, For we know you have stand, H. H. S. Ra! Ra! Ra! Hold that old ball, H. H. S. We’re win over all, H. H. S. Our team is the fame protector On boys for we expect A victory from you, H. H. S. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Walking along a river bank one evening at twilight, I noticed a little firefly flitting around me, when all at once he lit on my arm. I thought I heard someone speaking; so I listened closely, and at last I realized it was the firefly. He asked me if there were a special wish I wanted granted. I thought for a moment and as graduation was near I replied that I would like to seethe seniors ten years hence. The firefly whistled and a magic carpet appeared. We climbed on and were whisked through the air. We landed near a crystal ball in the center of a forest; a light shone from within the ball showing clearly the things that appeared there. A door to a large hospital opened and an attractive nurse was seen rushing down the hall. At a closer look I saw that it was Geneva Lawson. While looking into this hospital, I saw a noted surgeon, Norvin Bourne, and his able assistant, Shirley Walker, ferverishly working over a patient. A famous business school came into view and two girls came walking down the steps comparing letters from their boy friends. As they came closer I saw that they were Willa Mae Beeves and Betty Jean Jackson. A television set came sailing through the air and a famous dancing team was seen giving its weekly performance. This pair was Shirley Rice and Rita Hudson. We then saw the big city of New York and in the center, Yankee Stadium was highlighted where Bill Zody's professional base-ball team was trying its luck in the World Series. Next we visited an important Trans-Atlantic Airport where we saw the former Dolores Carmickle boarding a plane for a flight to France to visit her husband. As the airport vanished, the beautiful University of Kentucky appeared. In a crowded classroom a brilliant professor was lecturing on America's Foreign Policy. This professor, I realized, was my high school classmate, Cora Ann Bourne. A Cadillac came sailing down a public highway. I saw that the driver was Bruce Bottom, with his wife Irene and their family of many kids. Two famous opposing basketball teams were seen on the floor warming up for the game of the year. Their coaches came striding onto the floor and with pride I realized that I had gone to school with these boys who were Billy Simpson and Connie Drury. An exciting scene appeared next. It was a happy carnival where there was a crazy house. Our crystal ball moved where we could see from where all the blood curdling laughing was coming. Joyce Wilham and Norma Jean Keller were taking turns at the microphone. I then was shown another hospital where I saw a very proud couple. Hope Ann and Bobby Lowe’s second set of twins had just been born. Suddenly we had a vision of a busy Jenkins and Trisler Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company . Inside, Violet and Marie were busy giving their employees orders for the day. Next I saw John Shewmaker driving over his horse farm viewing his prospects for the next scheduled race. When the cloud of smoke vanished, a billboard rested in the center of the ball. It read Featuring two Famous Vaudeville Musicians on Stage Tonight at 7:00 P.M., May 16, 1963. Don’t Miss the One-night Only Appearance of Brennan Royalty and Charles Bonta! Admission, $1.50 per person . Our crystal ball then took us to Hollywood where everyone was talking about the new swimming star sensation. On a poster I saw a picture of Thelma Ross. A beautiful cathedral came into view from which soft organ music flowed. Inside, the organist, Kenneth Scrogham, was practicing for next day's service. Our next stop was at a dance where the former Nancy McElroy had accompanied her trumpet playing husband. At tlie following scene, a busy tobacco market, Hugh Phillips and Jay Lee McGinnis' prize-winning tobacco crop had just made them a small fortune. The crystal ball started spinning and when it stopped it showed a scene of natives gathered around their beloved missionary, Frances Hooks. Upon this tranquility broke the noise of a cheering crowd. In the center of a ring, Jackie Leonard had just been named Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World. Our next vision was a beautiful home where the former Nancy Wiley was arranging roses in the center of the dining room table. I was then taken to a Red Haired Beauty Contest where Joyce Royalty and Wanda Logue tied for the title. Next we saw Eugene Motley in Canada showing his companions the deer he had shot. From there we visited Alaska where Phyllis Reed, her husband and little girl, lived near an airforce base where Captain Reed was in charge. A busy intersection of town appeared and in the center Jim Patterson and Bill Hatchett were discussing the latest cars they had in th ir show windows. Next we saw a cozy living room where Bernice Rice and Lela Proctor were discussing their domestic problems. A microphone whizzed by and hanging on was Bobby Cloyd giving a fast comment on the latest sport happenings. Our attention was then centered on a park bench where Christine Ransdell and Marlene Browning sat talking over school days. The crystal ball turned to a debonair Wolf strolling on Park Avenue with a flock of girls following and giggling after him. This young man is Mac Davis.. A beautiful snow-covered mountain came into view and we saw Doris Coovert making her debut as she tried for distinguished skiing title. Again we saw a television screen showing the comedian Red Skeleton's latest replacement, Bill McClellan. A slick looking red convertible came into view. The two boys inside were giving wolf calls and whistling at all the girls as they drove slowly down the street. On closer examination, I discovered that these boys were Harold Devine and Glendon Demaree. Our ball then ventured into a fashionable restaurant where Anita Jones and Joyce Merriman, sat gaily laughing about their latest hook from the male world. For a moment the ball was blank; then we saw a beautiful church where the pastor, Elvin Carey, was opening the morning service with prayer. Again we were taken on a trip; this time to Washington, D.C. where we saw career girl, Doris McCrystal, performing her daily duties as secretary to the President of the United States. As the scene changed back to Kentucky we saw a modem guest house. The shingle read, Guest House Exclusively for Bachelors-Proprietor, Rose Marie Cotton A Cadillac drove into view and out stepped Bob Nelson, manager of Corning Glass Works in Harrodsburg. While our crystal ball was visiting Harrodsburg, we were shown an office where a prominent dentist, Morris Wright, was starting his day’s work on the full schedule ahead. Seen here also, was Ruby Cannada, the well-known modern author, paying a visit to the town. Our crystal ball started traveling again and we saw a scene in Florida of a tourist resort owned and operated by Betty Sue Price. The next appearance in the center of the ball was made by Bennie Yates who was arranging the schedule of the drivers of his Trans-Continental Truck Lines. Our following vision was of a movie set where a famous young actress was consulting her dress designer, Jean Sims, about the length of a street dress. Co-star, Curtis Ransdell was seen walking nervously up and down the set. The picture changed to an oriental one. Frances Robinson was seen giving instructions to the house girls for the visit of an eligible Chinese bachelor. Suddenly inside our crystal ball another crystal ball appeared. We saw, seated behind it, Bobby Vandivier, a famous magician. Our next scene was one of small children playing on a grassy lawn. A shingle over the gate said this was Mary Sallee and Mary Jenkins' Kindergarten School. My last gaze into the crystal ball revealed to me a man of fabulous wealth, Donald Pinkston, and his cigar smoking supporter, Bobby Clark, making their last public bid for Mayor of San Francisco.
