To them we owe much for they have devoted to us their valuable time and loyal friendship in our hours of need. But not only that— what they stand for has become part of us, and since we know they can never be fully repaid we wish to express our sincere appreciation for what they have meant to us and hope to be worthy of their inspiring guidance. FOUR YEARS UNDER THE BIG TOP ’48 - ’51 In June, 1947, a group of graduates (eighth grade, that is) were facing an unknown future. To them life appeared very bleak and puzzling. However, each went his way for the summer with the hope that when they met again in September they could christen and launch their career. And such was the case. At their September meeting someone suggested adopting the career of someone all the world loves and admires. Lincoln? No. The Wright Brothers? No. Well, who? Why, the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey, of course! So they started a circus. After counting noses they found they numbered 53, including some monkey noses to be sure! General managers of the circus, monkeys and all, were Mrs. Martha F. Peavler and Miss Sally Van-Winkle. Head of the executive department was Joe Harlow, assisted by ticket-seller Jimmie Dean, trapeze artist June Burns, chief clown Jakie Claunch, Circus Council members Jane Cocanougher and John Alexander, and A. E. Goodlett, one of the Ground Patrol. The circus enthusiasts found they had time for sports and elected June Burns barker for the teams. Joe Harlow, Mike Lowrey, Lawrence Willis, Billy Sims, Homer James, Bill Lanham, Bill Sinkhorn, and Curtis Sherrow played basketball while Jimmie Dean, Ansel Sallee, Joe Harlow, Lawrence Willis, Billy Sims, and Jerry Kurtz played football. After their first successful show they climbed on board their train bound for their next location with engineers, Mr. Forest Sale and Mrs. Virginia Coyle, manager June Burns, circus cook Joe Harlow, tight-rope walker Jakie Claunch, bare-back rider Jane Cocanougher, Council members Dessie Ashton and A. E. Goodlett, and Ground Patrol members Eugene Yates and A. E. Goodlett with “Boo” Coleman as sponsor. Back in the lounge car discussing sports were Joe Harlow, Curtis Sherrow, Lawrence Willis, Mike Lowery, and Bill Lanham aiming at the basket while Bill Sinkhorn, Ansel Sallee, Billy Sims, Joe Harlow, Lawrence Willis, A. E. Goodlett, and Mike Lowrey were kicking the pigskin around. In another car, wrong notes and batons were flying, for the circus now had a band, members of which were Paul Terhune, John Alexander, Holly Chilton, Jane Compton, and Jane Cocanougher with Betty Phillips and Betsy Keeling twirlers. Arrival at their next show-spot put to work lion-tamers Mrs. Ona Gritton and Mr. Hugh Adams, tent-boss Jimmie Dean, juggler Betty Sinkhorn, acrobat Joyce Pinkston, balloon-seller A. E. Goodlett, plus the Council and the Cops adding Jackie Vinning, Bill Sinkhorn, and Leo Lawson to the latter. Ready for more action in athletics were Joe Harlow, Curtis Sherrow, Lawrence Willis, Bill Lanham, and Robert Foster, basketball; and Joe Harlow, A. E. Goodlett, Bill Sinkhorn, Ansel Sallee, Robert Foster, Lawrence Willis, James Davis, Jerry Kurtz, Raymond James, and Homer James, football. Added to the circus band were Jimmie Dean and Johnnie Tapp, plus Loretta Steele, majorette. A special feature of the “Three Ringer” was a dramatic production, “Meet Me in St. Louis” presented November 11, 1949. Following the last show the night of May 21, 1950, the trapeze artists became hula dancers and gave their patrons a reception with an Hawaiian theme. Following that, their next and biggest show seemed only a short distance away. The big happy circus family now, with one member more than it had at its initial appearance, erected the big top with Mrs. Ona Gritton and Mr. Allen Wills heading the circus parade. The four big wheels of the first carriage were Lawrence Willis, James Davis, Joyce Pinkston, and Boo” Coleman. In the sports line-up on the basketball team were Joe Harlow, Curtis Sherrow, Bill Lanham, and Lawrence Willis with Joe Harlow, A. E. Goodlett, Robert Foster, Paul Ballou, James Davis, “Sonny” Proctor, Homer James, Lawrence Willis, Bill Sinkhorn, Bob Reynolds, Mike Lowrey, and Jakie Claunch lettermen on the football squad. Next came the Circus Council, the Ground Patrol Color Guard, and the band playing the fanfare for King and Queen Football, James Davis and Joyce Pinkston, with Patsy Demaree, Bill Lanham, Betty Phillips, and Curtis Sherrow attendants. The parade stopped on Main Street and presented The Divine Flora” on October 27, 1950. Heading back to the big top for their last show, the parade units spelled out, “IT’S BEEN SWELL, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!” In closing our four years of high school we would like to recognize the former members of our class who are now in the service of their country: Raymond James and Jerry Kurtz of the United States Navy and Ansel Sallee and Eugene Yates of the U. S. Air Force. The best of luck boys, and our hearts are with you. SOPHOMORE HISTORY 1950-51—Yes, we’re sophomores, the clowns of the high school. So well represented is our class in school activities, that you seldom have to look twice to find a sophomore. Our circus managers this year are Mrs. Arensman and Mr. Allen. Some of our clowns in the first ring of the circus have donned costumes of the officers. Our class President is Kenneth Scrogham; Vice-president, Rose Marie Cotton; Secretary, Jackie Leonard; and Treasurer, Betty Jackson. Last year the barkers for our group were Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. Nichols. We didn’t know half so many tricks as we do now, but we staggered through the show with Norvin Bourne as President; Doris Coovert as Vice-president; “Pat” Prewitt as Secretary, and Kenneth Scrogham as Treasurer. Those tricksters in the second ring also belong to our class. The largest clowns represent us on the gridiron. They are Bobby Clark, Eugene Motley, Jim Patterson, Brennan Royalty, Connie Drury, Jackie Leonard, Curtis Ransdell, Bobby VanDiver, and Billy Arnold. Those agile clowns on the hardwood are Billy Simpson, Jim Patterson, Norvin Bourne, Connie Drury, Jimmy Darland, and Bobby Cloyd. Those “clowns in blue” representing the band are Shirley Rice, Clona Christerson, Norvin Bourne, Charles Bonta, Bruce Bottom, Bill McClellan, Brennan Royalty, Mac Davis, Bobby Clark, Glendon Demaree, and Kenneth Scrogham. Last, but not least, we have in the third ring the mediator between the pupil and teacher, the student council. Cora Ann Bourne and Curtis Ransdell represent us here. Those clowns with the safety matches for the Safety Patrol are Bobby Lowe, Billy Hatchett, and Connie Drury. Bernice Hamm is also in this ring as cheerleader. Here we have the three rings, full of clowns representing every phase of school life. We will be looking forward to seeing you next year when we will be the “Jolly Juniors” in the circus parade of H. H. S. Kenneth Scrogham. We are the novelty of the school and the tail-end of every joke. However, we are at last a part of Harrodsburg High School and are very happy to have someone to look down to, even if it is only the 8th Grade. In the Fall of 1948 we entered Junior High and felt, at last, we were away from the Graded School and “up in the world.” But the 8th Grade soon put us in our places. Although it took us some time to adjust ourselves to this new environment we finally settled down and took our insults from the upper classmen quietly and with smiling faces. Our advisers for that year were Miss Bessie Baker and Mrs. Ella Fields, and our officers were: Jimmy Huddleston, President; I. C. Phillips, Vice-President; Norma Jo Smith, Secretary, and Monnie Gortney, Treasurer. In September, 1949 we enrolled in the 8th Grade with advisers, Mrs. Edward Coyle and Mrs. William Arensman. Our officers were: Jimmy Huddleston, President; I. C. Phillips, Vice-President; Gladys Gritton, Secretary; and Phyllis Carr, Treasurer. Members of the Student Council serving their Jr. High term were Jimmy Ingram and Mary Louise Barnett. The second team cheerleaders from our room were Monnie Gortney and Joyce Trimble. Our class officers this year are: T. S. Moore, President; Mary Helen Sanders, Vice-President; Junior Winston, Secretary; and Jimmy Leonard, Treasurer. Our advisers are Mr. Hugh Adams and Mrs. Aimee Alexander. We elected June Jackson Freshman cheerleader. The members of our class take part in Band, Glee Club, Y-Teens, Dramatics Club, 4-H Club, Conservation Club, Latin Club, Library Club, Bible Study, Guidance Club, Basketball, and Football. We hope we can leave a record of which the school can be justly proud. The Freshman Class bids you goodbye until next year when we will be “the Silly Sophomores” of H. H. S. This, however, is not true of the eighth grade of Harrodsburg High School, even though the upper classmen often regard us as such. We have taken part in several of the activities of the school. Some of the boys joined the Conservation Club, the Jr. Boys Guidance, 4-H Club, Band, and the Paper Staff. A few of them also play on the Jr. Varsity Basketball Team. The girls joined the Jr. Y-Teens, Glee Club, Library Club, 4-H Club, and the Dramatics Club. Soon after school started we elected class officers. They are: President, Buddy. Clark; Vice-President, Willard Hamm; Secretary, Jo Anne Sanders, and Treasurer, Wallace Campbell. The Jr. High cheerleaders selected from our class are: Carole Cochran, Gerry Lowery, Margaret Meredith, and Jo Anne Sanders. Our “trainers” are Mrs. Edward Coyle and Miss Mary Knox. The “zoo keepers” of our class are: Mrs. Coyle, Mrs. Gritton, Mr. Sale, Mr. Adams, Mr. Allen, and Mr. Gravely. We had hoped after finishing the seventh grade that we would no longer be looked upon as “babies,” but much to our disappointment, this year, we found that nothing had changed. We shall struggle on in this big “cage” under the strict rule of our “trainers” and “zoo keepers,” until next year, perhaps we shall step into another role in this “great circus.” By Jeanie Smith and Gerry Lowery. H. S. Football Pioneers had a very good season. Although the team was injury-ridden for the last three games, it came out the season winning 3 while losing 4. The opening game was with Madison Model High, of Richmond, and we lost, 18-2. The second clash was with Springfield. Once again we lost, this time by a smaller margin but a larger score, 25-12. Our third game proved to be our “rabbit’s foot.” We won over Elkhorn High with a 6 point clearance, 12-6. We also took the next game, which was with Stanford, 25-12. Nicholasville must have been our Waterloo, though, for we lost 19-0. Homecoming Game, with Lancaster, found King James Davis and Queen Joyce Pinkston reigning over a 19-0 victory. And our last tilt, with arch-rival Danville High, was a heart-breaker. Our injuries showed up then, and we were defeated to the tune of 42-0. Good luck next year, “Buddy.” We know you’ll have a good team, for you always do. Joe Harlow Joe Is a Senior, one of four that started out on this year's team. There’s no doubt about it. if any one player was responsible for the team's success this year, it was Joe. He could play any position on the floor, but usually center or forward. Joe will be greatly missed this next year, and we will wish for him back again. Cl'RTIS ShERROW Hat,” as he is called by his teammates, is a Senior also. Curtis, who played center or forward, along with Joe, controlled all the rebounds. He was a smooth player, never Jerky, and very level headed. His one-hand push shot, from any forward position, was very hard to stop. Hat will be missed too. Billy Laxham Maggie.” as his fellow players jokingly called him. was one of the first-string guards. He was hard to stop when he came down the floor with the ball, and was death on that long shot from the floor. Bill is a Senior and will be missed next year. also. Edward Robertson Ed was one of the outstanding guards on this year’s team. His one-hand jump-shot very seldom failed to go in the basket. Ed is only a Junior, and should help the team next year. Billy Cloyd .lock was one of the forward stand-outs. His set shot from out on the floor was uncannily accurate. Jock is only a Junior and will help out considerably on next year's team. ..
