The Haerodian published by THE SENIOR CLASS HARRODSBURG HIGH SCHOOL 1950 The graduating class of Nineteen Hundred Fifty wishes to present this year book with the sincere hope that it will recall many pleasant memories of high school days. DEDICATION Mu. Evans Harlow Mrs. Franklin Ransdell We dedicate the 1950 Harrodian to persons representing the various fields of education in the Har-rodsburg School system. It is impossible to attribute the sound advice and gracious influence which we have received to one person. Instead we find that Mrs. Ransdell, Mr. Harlow, and Mr. Wills have introduced to us the meticulous problems of life. They have supplied individual supervision necessary for the molding of our inquiring minds. The culture and education that are ours, we owe in part to them. As we embark on our sojourn of mature endeavors, we shall treasure the examples of generosity and kindness perpetuated by the influence of our sponsors. There shall always be a very warm place in our hearts for Mrs. Ransdell, Mr. Harlow, and Mr. Wills, to whom we dedicate this annual. Mr. J. K. THE SENIORS HOP TO SUCCESS — 1946 - 1950 In 1946, we the class of 1950, boarded our special airliner for our hop through four years of aviation school. We wore the identifying- Freshman beanie and carried the traditional “apple for the pilot.” In our first year of our flying course our flight instructors were Mrs. Peavler and Mr. Whitehead. Our flight officers were: Captain—Barbara King; 1st Lieutenant—Donald Rice; 2nd Lieutenant—Charles A. Curd, and Bombardier —Morris McClure. Members of our training school entered many of the activities opened to flyers. Some of these were: Y-Teens, F.H.A., Senior Hi-Y, H-Club, Conservation Club, Dramatic Club, H. A. A., and the Latin Club. Barbara King and Morris McClure represented us on the Flying Student Council. Jack Clark, Robert J. Black, and Donald Rice were our flying basketball players. Robert J. and Jack were also on the football team. Jean Sanders and Kenneth Poulter were chosen to lead our rousing cheers to back the boys. During a magazine contest held aboard plane, our class won fifty dollars as a reward for being high salesmen. We rewarded our selves by stopping over at Stanford and having a skating party. This was our last stop for the year, and as we alighted on the good old terra firma, we had at least learned that an airplane cannot stay in the air without gasoline. We climbed aboard our plane in our second year of flight training with the determination to ignore the title, “Silly Sophomores.” Our ground officals were Mr. Sale and Miss Gooch. Our officers were: Captain—Jack Clark; 1st Lieutenant—Don Catlett; 2nd Lieutenant—Barbara King, and Stewardess—Etta Jean Darter. We belonged to the same clubs as in the previous year with the addition of the Amazon Club, Boys Club, and Glee Club. Two of the boys became members of the Flying Patrol Club—designed to keep us from falling out into space. We elected Reeda Far-ney and Donald Rice to represent us on the Flying Student Council. Jack Clark, Bob Black, Will Glass, Donald Rice, and Kenneth Poulter were on our flying basketball team. The following received letters and bars in football: Bob Black, Jack Clark, Billy Sallee, and Andy Young. Our cheerleader, Jean Sanders, also received a bar. Jean Sanders and Will Glass were first attendants to the king and queen of football during the coronation program. During the latter part of the year our engines began sputtering and we had to land to refuel. While we were down, we just decided to take a vacation for three months and the next fall we all reassembled to begin our third year of gruelling aviation work. We carried our books with us, those that we had, that is, and left some in the aisle to the dismay of our navigators, Miss Allen and Mr. Harlow. Our officers were: Captain —Don Catlett; 1st Lieutenant—Will Glass; Flight Hostess—Dorothy Balden, and Radioman—“Rabbit” Sallee. Again we participated in the same extra curricular activities as last year and were also allowed to join the Science Club and the Beta Club. Our Flying Student Council representatives were Nancye Lou Ballard and Jack Clark. In order to entertain us and to keep us on the march, in the air, that is, a band was organized. Carolyn Linville, Mary Breck Bonta, Peggy Winston, Dorothy Balden, and Nancye Lou Ballard became majorettes, although they had a hard time keeping their balance when the plane hit an air pocket. Those earning letters and bars among the football stars were: Bob Black, Don Catlett, Jack Clark, Harold Cocanougher, James Foster, Donald Rice, and Kenneth Poulter. Bob Black, Will Glass, Jack Clark, Donald Rice, and Kenneth Poulter were on the basketball team. Jean Sanders served her third year as cheerleader. In order to produce funds for our Junior and Senior Reception, we published the PIONEER NEWS, sold soft drinks, and gave “There’ll Come a Day.” Our Junior plane landed at Beaumont Inn for the Junior-Senior Reception. We presented a Stork Club program with such celebrities as “Red Skelton” Clark, “Bing Crosby” Catlett, “Bob Hope” Glass, and “Walter Winched” Curd highlighting the evening. Songs were furnished by “Lena Horne” Mitchell and the Andrews Sisters—Jo Ann Asher, Nellie Freeman, and Carolla Lyons. We left the third year aviation class looking forward to our fourth year of oxygen masks and safety belts. And so, we entered our fourth and final year at Harrodsburg Aviation School. Our pilot and co-pilot were Mrs. Ransdell and Mr. Wills. Our officers were: Captain—Jack Clark; 1st Lieutenant—Don Catlett; 2nd Lieutenant—Barbara King, and Nurses Aid— Betty Sizemore. We would-be pilots took numerous places of leadership in the various activities of the school; several held offices in the clubs. Nancye Lou Ballard and Jack Clark were on the Flying Student Council. Will Glass, Kenneth Poulter, and Donald Rice were on the first team in Basketball. Billy Sallee, Jack Clark, Harold Cocanougher, Don Catlett, John DeVary, Norvia Burns, Donald Rice, Kenneth Poulter, and Morris McClure were on the football team. Jean Sanders was captain of the cheerleaders and received a sweater to keep her warm in the higher altitudes. Morris McClure was the only boy cheerleader representing our plane. We are looking forward to our Senior Play, the Junior and Senior Reception, and our graduation exercises. Our four years of aviation school have been pleasant ones and in June we will make our three-point landing. We are ready to become full-fledged pilots and to take command of our planes to follow the highways of the air. We’ll always remember our instructors and our comrades whom we knew on our flight through Harrodsburg High School. We bid you goodbye and hope that you will remember us as we remember you. May your hop to success be as quiet and easy as ours has been! Jane Bourne. TWENTY CREDIT PUPILS Reading left to right: Carolyn Smith Dorothy Balden Nancye Ballard Jean Sanders Donald Catlett Mary B. S. ready to begin our four-year trek through the halls of our school. Our sponsors for this first year were Miss Sally VanWinkle and Mrs. Martha F. Peav-ler. We elected as our officers: Joe Harlow, President; Jimmie Dean, Vice-President; June Burns, Secretary; and Jakie Claunch, Treasurer. When another year rolled around, we started planning to have as good a time being Sophomores as we had had being “Green Freshmen.” We were sponsored by Mrs. Virginia Coyle and Mr. Forest Sale. To fill the vacancies left by last year’s officers were: June Burns, President; Joe Harlow, Vice-President; Jakie Claunch, Secretary; and Jane Cocanougher, Treasurer. Our Sophomore year scon came to an end, and we were looking forward eagerly to the next year. We entered our school this year with the new title of “Jolly Juniors” and said adieu to the old one, “Silly Sophomores.” Our able advisers were Mrs. Ona Gritton and Mr. Hugh Adams. Serving us as our officers were: Jimmie Dean, President; Betty Sinkhom, Vice-President; Joyce Pinkston, Secretary; A. E. Goodlett, Treasurer. We were very happy to be joined this year by students from Fairview and Cornish-ville, along with a few other new faces at H. H. S. June Burns, who was chosen to wear the blue and white as a Freshman, was elected again as cheerleader. Betty Coleman was Safety Patrol sponsor for the second year. Members of the Safety Patrol were Jackie Vinning, Bill Sinkhom, A. E. Goodlett, Leo Lawson, and Eugene Yates. Those participating in sports were: Basketball—Joe Harlow, Curtis Sherrow, Lawrence Willis, Billy Lanham, and Robert Foster; Football—Joe Harlow, A. E. Goodlett, Bill Sinkhom, Ansel Sallee, Robert Foster, and Lawrence Willis. Student Council representatives were Dessie Ashton and A. E. Goodlett. Anne Clark, Johnnie Tapp, John Alexander, and June Burns were members of THE PIONEER staff. Many Juniors were also represented in the various clubs; Senior Y-Teens, Beta Club, Latin Club, H. A. A., Science Club, F. H. A., Dramatic Club, 4-H Club, Glee Club, and H-Club. Our contributions to our band, one of the best high school bands in Kentucky, included Paul Terhune, Jane Cocanougher, Jimmie Dean, Jane Compton, Holly Chilton, Johnnie Tapp, and John Alexander. Betty Keeling was one of the senior high majorettes. The Junior Class play, “Meet Me in St. Louis,” with the entire class participating, was on November 11, 1949. It proved to be a great success and at the same time very profitable. We are now looking forward to giving the Junior-Senior Reception, the big event of this year. Following this year, we hope to become the leaders of our school, the “Sophisticated Seniors,” and hope we shall reach our final destination with the leadership and abilities we should have. The novelty of high school that bolstered him as a freshman has vanished, graduation is not near enough to give the encouragement it affords Juniors and Seniors, and he wanders unhappily through a maze of English, History, and second year Algebra. However, every pie must sometimes be “half-baked” and so it is with high school pastry and Sophomores. The tasty filling of a pie must be supported by the crust. We had lots of crust when we were freshmen. That year our sponsors were Mrs. Ransdell and Mrs. Peavler. We elected Louis Veatch, chief cook, aided by bottle-washer; Carl Cummins, Vice-President; Nancy Price, Secretary, and Joe Hurt, Treasurer. Our class was proud of its representation in almost every school activity, the band, clubs, and all the rest. Our pie is probably pumpkin, since as Sophomores we had plenty of ginger. Floyd Riggins was our President, with Joe Hurt, Margaret Gortney, and Nancy Davis, as Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, respectively. Mr. Sale and Mrs. Wills helped us as sponsors. The Sophomore pumpkin pie had several heads in it. No! No! Not pumpkin heads, heads of CLUBS. Some Sophomore club officers are: Latin Club, Nancy Davis, Vice-President, and Margaret Gortney, Secretary; F. H. A., Margaret Gortney, Historian, Frances Dean, Secretary, Nancy Price, Treasurer, and Adeline Sims, song leader. Y-Teen Secretary was Margaret Gortney and Glee Club Treasurer was Jim Hurt. The band presidency was held by Carl Cummins and Joe Hurt was drum major of the organization. Any good high school pie needs a dash of athletics. Sophomore football players were: John Reed, John Huffman, Hollis Goodlett, William Tyler, and Jimmy McGinnis, while Sophomore representatives on the basketball floor were: John Reed, John Huffman, Edward Robertson and Billy Cloyd. George James was one of the managers and Daisy Tewmey was our cheerleader. Baking adds the final touch to a pie and it takes a good band to add the final touch to a football game, pep rally, or any other school affair. Sophomore Bandsmen are: Floyd Riggins, Carl Cummins, Adeline Sims, Joe Hurt, Jim Hurt, Nar.cy Davis, Lorraine Gay, Buddy Terhune, Louis Veatch, Keith Johnson, Howard James, Mildred Daugherty, and Don Billy Robinson. Majorettes are Joyce Houchins and Nancy Price. A pie usually takes only one trip to the table, but we managed a longer one. On October 3, 1949, we enjoyed a hayride and weiner roast at Perryville. On the whole, I think, we have done a good year’s work on our pastry and are ready for the labors of the Junior year. Jim Hurt. Now we can stand up for ourselves, whereas last year and the year before every high school student looked down upon us as “babies.” At the first of the year, when we were just climbing out of our buggy, the student body looked in, and seeing Bernice Hamm, chose her as the freshman to wear the cheerleader’s blue and white. Our sponsors, who are steadying us as we take our first unsteady steps in Senior High, are Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. Nichols. We chose for our class officers this year Norvin Bourne as President; Doris Coovert, as Vice President; “Pat” Prewitt as Secretary ; and Kenneth Scrogham as Treasurer. Three of our freshman boys climbed out of the baby buggy and toddled right on out to the gym, to join the second team in basketball. They are Connie Drury, Bobby Cloyd and Billy Simpson. Two, Bobby Lowe and Connie Drury, joined the patrol. But everyone in our class is growing u p. Many of us have traded our baby rattlers for band instruments or batons, while others have just thrown their rattlers away. In September, 1949, we entered the eighth grade with our advisers, Mrs. Edwin Coyle and Mrs. William Arensman. Our officers were: Jimmy Huddleston, President; I. C. Members of the class take part in the Band, Glee Club, Y-Teens, Dramatics Club, Camera Club, 4-H Club, Conservation Club and Guidance Club. Our second team cheerleaders are Monnie Gortney and Joyce Trimble. The student council members from our class are Jimmy Ingram and Mary Louise Barnett. We’re proud, but yet a little sad. We say Few words to one another. These few hours seem Too short, too glad, too meaningful for speech; Our goal, our dream, is now within our reach. We gaze beyond this hour’s exultant pride To look toward life, toward laughter, and toward love; To use our knowledge in the never-ending tide; To struggle onward to that home above. Through cloudy days or sunlit hours long, The memory of our school will keep us strong. The time has finally come to say adieu To our oncc-thought “never-ending’’ high school days. To our high school family so loyal and true We say good-bye with “never-ending” praise. The time has arrived; we shed many sorrowful tears, For we know in our hearts we leave all that to ui is most dear. In years to come our thoughts will never wander; We’ll wish that we were once more back again. Down Memory’s Lane we’ll often dream and ponder About our friends in halls of Harrodsburg fame. So carry on forever, future grad3, Cherish each minute as the best you’ve had. We bid farewell to teachers, friends, and past. Harrodsburg High we’ll love until the last! Coach “Buddy” Adams has shown what he can do with a small squad of men. With only 8 lettermen back from last year, the Pioneers were compelled to work hard. Although the team as a whole was small in size, they made up for their size in speed and punch. The Pioneers finished the season with a record of 5 won, 2 lost, and 1 tied. Here is the way the season went for the Pioneers: Harrodsburg ...................... 13 Harrodsburg ........................ 6 Harrodsburg.........................18 Harrodsburg........................ 26 Harrodsburg......................... 6 Harrodsburg......................... 0 Harrodsburg.........................13 Harrodsburg .........-............. 0 Winchester ..............................14 Madison ................................. 0 Springfield..............................13 Anderson ................................ o Stanford .............................. o Nicholasville ........................... o Lancaster................................ o Danville.................................20 82 47 Jack Clark Jack vaa the Key-man on the squad. Although playing most of the season with an Injured knee, he gave outstanding performances at all times. His shoes will be hard to fill next season. Billy Sallee “Coffee was one of the heaviest men on the team. He played hard all the time and never gave up. He will be a great loss to the team next year. Don Catlett Sliek” plugged the hole of one of the most important positions on the team, that of blocking back. He will be greatly missed by the squad next year. Bill Ellers rollers was always in there fighting when he was needed. He did his best at every opportunity. He should be a great loss to the team. Donald Rice Hire played every game this season. He was a halfback who could get around on the field. He is another one of the regulars who will be missed next season. OR VIA BlRNS Xorvia. a senior on tin- squad, was always ready and willing to get in there and fight. He was a ways pushing hard for victory. Harold Cot a notch i:k “Coke, as he was called by his teammates, was one of the outstanding guards in the Conference. He never seemed to tire, and was always trying to win. lb will leave a large hole to be filled next season. Kenneth Potltku Poulter did not get started until in the season, but he showed that he could play good, hard football. He will not be back next season. Joe Harlow Joe was one of the outstanding players this year. He played hard football all year, and will be back next year. Hollis Goodlett Hollis was the smallest man in the backfleld. He was always working hard for the team. John Dkvary John played only a few games this year but he showed that he could play good football. He is another loss to the Pioneer team. John Reed “Skceter” is only a Sophomore and he surely fought for the team. He will be a big help to next year’s team. Rill Sinkhorn Hill was always in there driving. He worked hard all year and should develop into a very good player next year. James Davis James was the pivot man for the team this season. This is his first year, but he showed that he could be depended upon. He will be a big help to next year’s team. A. E. Goodlett A. R, the heaviest man on the squad, always used his weight to the advantage. He is a senior in athletics, and we would like to see him back next year. William Tyler Tyler, a sub on this year’s team, helped the boys a lot. He was always willing when the team needed him. He Is only a Sophomore. Lawrence Willis rude” played hard in every name. He could really help the hoys when they needed help. He will he with the team next year. John Htffman John played quite a hit of foot-hall this year. He is a Sophomore and is sure to l e a starter next year. Jerky Krinv. Jerry played a lot of football this year and showed much improvement. He should he a starting: player next year. Rohekt Foster Robert did not play much this year hut should make someone work for a position next year. Homer James Homer, a Junior on the squad, was always ready and willing to go in and fight. He did a good job this year, and we will he looking for him next year. Jimmy McGinnis Jimmy did not see much action this year but should he able to play a lot of football next year. Raymond James Raymond did not play much this year, but should see more action next year. Hailey Gaines “Mojo did not get started until late in the season. He is only a seventh grader and should be a prominent figure for next year's team. BASKETBALL ’49 - ’50 Early in the fall of 1949 Coach “Aggie” Sale started rounding up the basketball squad for the coming season. All the H. H. S. fans were wondering what kind of team they would be supporting, but after a few games they were not worried. The Pioneers were met by many tough opponents, including: Stanford, Danville, Somerset, Dixie Heights, U-High, Winchester, and Frankfort. Although our team was small, it pulled through with 24 wins and 1 loss. In the District Tournament, Harrodsburg defeated McAfee, Midway, and won out over Versailles by a very close two-point margin. Harrodsburg had the honor of placing Will Glass, Don Rice, Bill Ellers, and Joe Harlow on the All-Tournament Team. In the Regional Tournament, the Pioneers won out in the first round over Georgetown, but came back to lose in the semi-finals to the STATE CHAMPION, THE LAFAYETTE GENERALS. The loss of Glass, Rice, Ellers, and Poulter will leave a large vacancy in next year’s team, but we know that with the outstanding coaching of Sale and Harlow, our team will be among the best next year. He was not a high scorer but he could really handle the ball. He was a great defensive guard as well as a great playmaker. We surely hate to lose such a valuable player. DON RICE—“Larry” was also a good defensive guard for the Pioneers this season. His scoring was very high for the season. He always played good, hard, basketball. We wish you could be back next year, “Larry.” KENNETH POULTER—Poulter was always playing hard in every game. Although he was not a high scorer, he stayed in the starting line-up because of his hustle and driving desire to play ball. This is Poulter's last year of performance for the Pioneers. BILL ELLERS Ellers was one of the best ball handlers on the Pioneer team. Besides being a good ball handler he was an exceptionally good shot from the floor. His quick thinking has made many a score for the Pioneers. J E HARLOW—Joe’s rebounding, ball handling, and high scoring was one of the factors which enabled the Pioneers to roll on to their most successful season. Joe is only a Junior, and he will be back next year to keep the Pioneers going toward another successful season. CURTIS SHERROW—Sherrow always used his height to the team’s advantage. His accurate one-hand shot from the floor, and from the free throw line, added many points to the Pioneer’s total. Keep it up Sherrow!! We will be looking for you next year. BILL LANHAM—Lanham was a sub for our Pioneers this season and was only used sparingly. He likes to shoot from far out in the floor. He will be back next year to help round out the Pioneer team. JOHN REED “Skeeter” was on the sideline ready to fight for the team anytime he could this year. When he was on the hardwood he did his best. Skeeter’’ is only a Sophomore, anu should be a valuable asset to next year’s team LAWRENCE WILLIS -“Uncle” saw action a in a few games this season. When he did play, he played his best. He was a good reserve this season. He is a Junior with another year’s performance before him. JOHN HUFFMAN—Huffman rounded out the reserves for the Pioneers. He was a good defensive player. He has seen little action this year but should play more next year. John is a Sophomore. EVAN HARLOW—“Ev” was anothei main factor in the Pioneer’s drive for a successful season. He also spent many long hours helping the team. When times became rough, he was always there to give a good word or a pat on the back. His ready smile and helpful words helped unknot the score in many tight games. We have all appreciated your work, “Ev.” FOREST SALE—Coach “Aggie” Sale has completed his most successful season since coming to Har-rodsburg. “Aggie” spent many long, hard, hours with the team, in helping it have a good season. All of the boys like “Aggie,” a former All-American player. His slow, easy manner and friendly disposition inspire confidence among his boys. He will lose four lettermen but will be looking ahead to next year’s team. COMPLIMENTS OF CARR SERVICE Louisville and Warwick Roads SHORT ORDERS 21 HOUR SERVICE The above sketch shows the Editor and Business Manager of the Stone Hedge High School doing a bang-up job on the year book for their class of 7899 B. C. They had their troubles. At graduation time only one page was done. And no one in the class was strong enough to lift it, let alone take it back to their cave for the family to see. Today modern letterpress printing and photo-engraving enables our high school graduates to have a complete record of their school years in one compact book at reasonable cost . . . whose reading will bring back happy memories to him or her many times in later life. The Kentucky Engraving Company congratulates the Editorial Staff of the Harrodsburg Pioneer for the business-like way in which they have prepared and edited this Year Book. It is a work they can be proud of . . . and it speaks well for their individual futures in college and life. The Kentucky Engraving Company 428 West Short Street Lexington, Kentucky .V£
