In later days we hope this annual will remind us of those memories we cherish most. 4 The Senior Class of 1948 wishes to express their appreciation and devotion to Mrs. Aimee Alexander and Mr. Evan Harlow, whose loyalty and friendship have made our high school days more pleasant, and who have won a place in our hearts where they can never be forgotten. With sincere appreciation of their earnest work and helpful influence on our lives, we gratefully dedicate this annual. 5 A Tribute to Mr. Ensminger There is one person to whom we wish to pay special tribute, not only for this class, but for the classes that for many years have been coming into these halls, and receiving more than just a liberal education in the arts and sciences, necessary to our instruction—but whose example to us, and to the men and women of this community, and those who have gone out to other parts of the world, has been an outstanding example of devotion to duty; whose scholarly education has given us the best possible knowledge for entrance to college or to the world of experience; whose patience and kindly understanding have steadied us and given us an anchor when we thought that our world might be blown to pieces; who never failed to have time for us and our problems. His own sufferings and worries we could not bear, but his heartaches were ours, because he was the heart of our school. The throbbing pulses and echoing feet of many boys and girls have passed through these halls, and he has met them all with the same sweetness of manner, the same grace of a real gentleman, the same fortitude of the soldiers that went from here to the battlefields. We shall not forget our superintendent, Mr. Ensminger, who has meant more to this community than words will ever be able to tell. He was more than just the head of our schools—to us, he is the symbol of all that is finer and better in education in books and in life. He gave us his best, and our thanks are so inadequate—we can only say that his inspiration will make us better, kinder, and more tolerant citizens of tomorrow. )tt ‘Tftema'Uf 0$O. 24J. J. K. Powell, Superintendent To you, Mr. Powell, the Senior Class of 1948, can say with sincerity that you have completed your first year as superintendent with success. You have co-operated with us in every way, and to you, we say thanks. 8 Harrodsburg Board of Education Arch C. Woods Joe Sandusky Dr. C. B. VanArsdall, Chairman Glave Vivion, Vice Chairman Ralph B. THE PIONEER CLASS SONG The Pioneer came, as the story goes With head up high; looking straight ahead For the horizon where the Sunlight glows, With his own bare hands a creation he made. For you and me he fought and won— And at our feet a wonderful nation he laid. Oh! The story is old and the Pioneer is gone— Now we are ready to go and to do As he did in years gone so long. We have learned, and we have played We have laughed, and we have cried But every good thing comes to an end, so they say. We say goodbye to you, classmates so good and true, The time has come for us to part, but not in heart. With memories clear of days so dear, We'll remember through the years. Our schooldays are all through, and we bid a sad adieu, May our friendships live forever more We'll build a future so strong, as the years go rolling on, So dear classmates—goodbye to you. Our footsteps and voices will echo down thru the years; Thoughts of this dear school that we love, And memories, bring to our eyes many flowing tears. In thankfulness to God for these memories we pray And rise up as a voice shouts aloud, Rise up, You Pioneers, rise up and go on your way Colleen James, Class Poet Most Popular Boy T. C. S. and Mr. Pioneer were crowned by their first attendants. Kathryn Sanders, our actress, blonde, and lovely as well—reigned side by side with lovable Billy Lively, whose baritone voice and football activity, helped them to be named Miss H. H. S., and Mr. Pioneer by their fellow students. On December 19, 1947, First Attendants—Jean Sanders and Will Glass, Second Attendants—Betty Booth Coleman and James Isham, Third Attendants—Barbara Daugherty and Billy Sims, led the Court of Honor, in the gymnasium, for Miss H. H. S. and Mr. Pioneer. Representatives of every organization formed the Court of Honor. The evening dresses of the girls and the formal attire of the boys, as seen in these pictures, show that homespun garments are not the attire of all Pioneers. These Southern Belles and their handsome Beaux were the background of the reception given by the Juniors in honor of the graduating Seniors of '47. 35 THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16th The Junior Class of '46 and '47 proved that it could successfully present a Broadway play, on two successive nights, with two different casts. This play, whose scene was laid in a courtroom, was a comedy-drama in three acts. Karen Andre was declared innocent by a jury selected from the audience, after much debating over the decision. It was strange, but not surprising to us, that a group of amateurs could portray such a motley cast of characters as would be found in a New York Courtroom, portraying such roles as secretary, bereaved widow, district attorney, prosecuting attorney, Swedish scrubwoman, gangster, millionaire-John Graham Witfield, and Roberta Van Rensselaer, chorus girl—as well as all the other necessary characters in a real murder trial. Yes, Night of January 16th was a real box office sensation in this Pioneer town of Har-rodsburg. 38 tytMitn (plate Left to Right Row 1—MINNIE REA WOODS, JEAN PATTERSON, CAROLYN CAREY, ANDY YOUNG, OLA FRANCES TYLER, SHIRLEY SHUCK, RUTH EVELYN BREWER. ONA GRITTON Junior Class History In nineteen hundred and forty-five, the class of '49 jumped eagerly on our covered wagon to begin our four-year trek across the wilderness of H H. S. Our drivers were Claude Perkins. B F. Edwards. Violet Wilham, and Andy Young. Our sponsors were Mrs. Alexander and Mr. Whitehead. Barbara Daugherty was chosen to wear our blue and white as a cheerleader. When another year rolled around, we proudly became sophomores and dropped our titles of green freshmen. We elected Cordon Smith, Amos Young, Patsy Trimble and Norma Moore for officers. We were sponsored by Miss Van Winkle and Mr Sale. From our class we had Shirley Shuck and Bobby Smith, who were second attendants to the football Queen and King. Claude Perkins joined Barbara in cheerleading. When we became juniors, Mrs. Critton became our able advisor, John David McCellan, Shirley Shuck, Evelyn Brewer, and Cordon Smith served us as officers. We joined the organizations and became leaders in many of them — H. H. A.. Amazon Club, Beta Club. Y-Teens. French Club, F. H. A , Dramatic Club. Science Club, and Debate Club. We are also proud of the juniors who have helped to win the ball games in '47 and '48. On the Pioneer Football Team we had John David McCellan, Jimmy Isham, Frank DeVylder, Charles Kurtz and Andy Young. Frank DeVylder. John David McCellan, and Monty Price were on the first team in basketball. On October 2, we presented our class play, in the form of a minstrel in three parts. It proved to be quite a success. Barbara Daughtery served as third attendant to the football Queen and Jimmy Isham was second attendant to the King. Our school paper, The Junior Journal,” was published by a staff of most of the Junior class members. The co-editors were Jean Patterson and Frank DeVylder. The entire class participated in the magazine drive. Charles Kurtz and John David McCellan received prizes for selling the most subscriptions in the school. As a result of the contest between the Junior boys and girls, the boys were the recipients of a dinner given by the girls. The Junior Class sponsored a Sadie Hawkins' Day Party on November 15, which was loads of fun. The last big event of this year was the Junior-Senior Reception, given the first of June. We are looking forward to the days when we shall be the leaders of our caravan, and hope we shall reach our final destination with very few difficulties. Minnie Rea Woods. We, like all pioneers of Harrodsburg, chose this covered wagon — our High School. There are many steps and discomforts as well as pleasures in traveling. Last year we entered on the wagon for our long four-year trip. We found many new pioneer friends who have helped us out in our troubles. Many in our class entered into the numerous activities of the school. We were honored by having two good sponsors. Miss Field and Mr. Whetehead. A magazine drive was held during our Freshman year and our class, working together, won the fifty dollar prize given for the class selling the most subscriptions. We used part of our money for entertaining the class with a skating party at Stanford. It seemed as though we hadn’t been traveling long when it was time to stop for a vacation. We had worked together, enjoyed the year together, and looked forward to the next year. Again time was flying by, and it was September, 1947 — Time for us to start on our second step of the journey, pioneering through H. H. S. We have had as our companions on this part of the journey, Miss Gooch and Mr. Sale. With the theme of Pioneering and our officers Jack Clark, Don Catlett, Barbara King, and Etta Jean Darter, we have had a safe journey in our second year. Again many of our friends entered into the pioneering activities; the Latin Club, F.H.A., Y-Teens, Amazon Club, and Boys Chorus. Donald Rice and Barbara King were our representatives for the Student Council. Many in our class were honored by being in the coronation program on December 19, 1947, the crowning of the King and Queen of football. Jean Sanders and Will Class were elected from the Sophomore Class to be the first attendants to the King and Queen. Our part of this covered wagon has been honored also by having Jack Clark, Bob Black, Will Class, Donald Rice, and Kenneth Poulter as outstanding basketball players. Those from our class who received letters and bars in football were: Bob Black, Don Catlett, Jack Clark, Billy Sallee, Andy Young, and our cheerleader, Jean Sanders. This class is looking forward to our next year, for we have come to the close of another year. We want to keep on pioneering for H. H. S. as we journey along, and bring new honors to our high school. Freshman Fantasy Our Freshman Class of '47 and '48 began by defying Fort H. H. S.’s Pioneering theme. We were not pioneers but strictly hepcats. Coon-skin caps were not our hpadgear, but instead jive covered scarfs and stocking caps. Neither did we, like the pioneers of other days, bring apples to our teachers; although we secretly admired Miss Field and Miss Van Winkle. The commanding officers of cabins four and seventeen in the fort were Joe Harlow. President; Jimmie Dean, Vice-President; June Burns, Secretary; and Jakie Claunch, Treasurer. Leading us in rooting for the Pioneers was June Burns, cheerleader. Keeping us inside the fort walls was A E Goodlett, one of the Safety Patrol. Reporting our items of news to the paper was the job of Billy Sims. Representing us in the Student Council wereJohn Alexander and Jane Cocanougher. Fighting for our cabins in football were Jimmie Dean, Ansel Sallee, Joe Harlow. Lawrence Willis, Billy Sims, and Jerry Kurtz. Selected as a Pioneer in basketball was Joe Harlow. Mike Lowrey, Lawrence Willis, Billy Sims, Homer James, Billy Lanham, Billy Sinkhorn, and Curtis Sherrow were chosen for second team. In cabin four the girls circle of clubs included: Junior Y-Teens, Senior High Girls Glee Club, The Amazon Club, the Dramatic Club. Debate Club, Latin Club, 4-H Club, F. H. A., and the H. A. A. In cabin seventeen the activities of the boys were: Senior High Boys Glee Club, Latin Club, Boys Conservation Club, H. A. A., H-Club, Dramatic Club, Debate Club, and the Boys Club. Very quietly (?) and very successfully (?) the freshman class party was held in the “Chow Cabin of Fort H. H. S. in October, 1947. The guiding pioneers were Miss Field and Miss Van Winkle. Games, short movies, and refreshments made the evening an enjoyable one. Betty Phillips and June Burns were delegates at the Y-Teens State Conference at Shelbyville on November 15, 1947. Together with the many colds borne patiently by freshmen, there were two hospitalizations. Betsy Keeling and Louise Pruitt were victims of appendicitis. m - '■ In the coronation of Mr. Pioneer and Miss H. H. S. there were several freshman participants. These were Betty Boo Coleman, second attendant; Billy Sims, third attendant. Of all the class of approximately sixty-two, we agreed that History I was our greatest pain in the brain. So now after blazing a trail through the deep, dark wilderness of Freshman Fantasy we are tired but experienced Pioneers, and to the future Freshmen we leave our sympathy. 49 Jane Cocanougher Mike Lowrey MOTTO: ALWAYS ACHIEVING --STILL PURSUING City of Ability County of Doing We, the Senior Class of nineteen hundred forty-eight (1948). are now leaving our past, composed of both work and pleasure, and are now preparing to make our journey into the future. Irmal was a constant runner, and a good passer and kicker. He is a senior, and will be greatly missed next year. Donald Dean—Donald was one of the team's best defensive players. He didn’t get to play in but a few games because of injuries, but played heads up ball during that time. He is a senior and will be missed next year. Sammy Edwards— Coot, a senior, didn’t get to play all of the year because of injuries. He was one of the leading ball carriers while he was in there. Billy Lively— Buck played his best football this year. Billy never seemed to tire. He was in there always trying to win. This is his last year and his absence will be a great loss to the team. Truly, Billy was Mr. Pioneer, football king. T. C. Coleman— Mule was a good pass receiver. He always gave the opponents a lot of trouble when they ran his end. T. C. is a senior and will leave a big place to be filled next year. Jimmy Wallace — Bruiser was the heaviest player on the team, and always used his weight to advantage. He is a senior and the team will miss his high spirited play, and bruising punches to the opponents. Joseph Harlow—Joe was a substitute at the start of the season, but won a place on the team before the season was over. He is only a freshman, and should develop into a valuable player. Andy Young — Andy was the smallest player on the team. This was his first year of football, and from this year’s outstanding playing, he should be a valuable man on the ’49 squad. 57 Frank DeVylder — Frenchy had more spirit than any one on the team. He always played good hard football. Frank has one more year to play and should be a big help to next year's team. Charles Kurtx — Pig was a big factor in the line. He played hard and with his fine spirit, he should be one of next year's best players. Jimmy Isham — Isham played a good defensive game in the line, and should help next year's team win a lot of games. Isham is a Junior. John David McClellan — John David was an outstanding player this year. He was a lineman, until called into the backfield to pilot the team. He showed good judgement all year, and should really hit the peak next season. Don Catlett — Catlett played a good defensive game all year. He was a hard worker and always could be depended upon in a tight place. Catlett has two more years to play and should develop in to an outstanding player in future years. Charles Curd — Charles Albert showed much improvement at the end of the season, and should make the first team next year. Jack Clark — Dago was on the injured list most of the season. He was a dependable back field man and his loss to the team was felt throughout the year. Jack is only a Sophomore, and should show outstanding play his next two years. Bill Glass — Bill played only in a few of the games this year but showed he could play good footbalf. He should be a prominent figure on next year's team. 56 Robert J. Black — Bob was a big reason for the team's success this year. Bob will be back next year, and should prove himself one of the best backs in the state. Bill Sallee — Sallee gave all opponents trouble, with his defensive play. He is back next year and should play a lot of football. Jimmy Dean — Jimmy played a lot of football this year. He is only a Freshman, and should be one of the school's best athletes before he graduates. He is carrying out a long list of Deans traditions the past ten years. Lawrence Willi — Lawrence did not play much this year, but showed much improvement, and should make a good player for next year. Ansel Sallee — Buck did not play much this year, but should make some one work for a position next year. Billy Sims — Ollie played an excellent defensive game, and helped pull the team out of some tough spots. He is certain to be a starter next year. Jerry Kurtz — Jerry never got to see much action this season, but should be able to play a lot of football next year. Johnny Prewitt — Johnny should develop into an excellent lineman. He is an eighth grader and weighs over two hundred pounds. 59 “Casey was hampered by injuries this year, but showed that he was an excellent player during the time he was allowed to play. “Casey started the season as a back and was one of Coach “Aggie” Sale Coach Evans Harlow Carlyslc Garrison, Captain the best blockers on the team. This year's small and inexperienced team surprised everyone with its brilliant play. Having only one regular, back from last year's squad and three other players that were expected to be a big help to this year's team were either injured during the football season or had dropped out of school, Coaches Sale and Harlow, had to mould a team from boys, whose experience on the hardwood was limited to second team games. The first five was composed of two seniors, one junior, one sophomore, and one freshman. The Pioneers started the season with a startling win over Wilmore, and from then on, they showed that they could match any team on the hardwood by downing such teams as Madison, Lawrenceburg, Kavanaugh, Burgin, and Danville. The squad included John David McClellan, T. C. Coleman, Joe Harlow, Will Glass, Carlysle Garrison, Kenneth Poulter, Monty Price, Donald Rice, Bob Black, Frank DeVyler, and Jack Clark, with managers James and Catlett taking good care of the needs of the team. Coaches Aggie Sale and Evan Harlow were much pleased with the successful squad of the season, not to mention the peppy cheerleaders, the loyal students, and the townspeople who followed the team. The success of the Pioneers this year was built around a strong zone defense, accurate goal shooting, ability to play a smooth floor game, and good sportsmanship. 63 Second 7eant First Row: Mr. Sales, Curtis Sherrow. From this day forward our memories shall begin. These memories shall carry us back to our high school days when we were real Pioneers ; they will bring back .the visions of alt our classmates. As we close the doors behind us, and walk into our futures, we hope your school days will be as successful as ours. From the bottoms of our hearts we say, Thank you , to everyone who has made our work easier and more pleasant. Whenever we go and whatever we do, we will never regret one moment spent at Harrodsburg High School. As the wagon wheels of time roll forward, we turn back again to say Thanks, and Farewell to all. 78 To these Modern Pioneers, the advertisers, the Senior Class of 1948, wishes to express its appreciation for their support and loyalty during our years in school, and for helping to make this pictorial yearbook possible. 79 Compliments of Kexander and l oyafh MODERN FUNERAL HOME AMBULANCE SERVICE Telephone 116 Harrodsburg, Kentucky 80 Your Friendly Ford Dealer wishes to take this opportunity to congratulate the graduating class of 1948 on work well done, and wish them well on their journey through life.
