V E T E R A N S We, the Senior Class of 1947, wish to honor the boys who gave up high school to enter the service, and have come back to graduate with us this year. We are very glad to welcome them back by dedicating this page to them. f listory of the Class of 47 Twas a green, scared, but eager class that entered the portals of Harrodshurg High School as Seventh Graders in September, 1941. With the typical spirit of all seventh graders, we were afraid of the big upperclassmen, and we rushed to classes like we were going to a fire, hut this lasted only for a little while. We soon learned that if we did not want to he ridiculed we should go through the halls leisurely, and that the upper-classmen were just a group of big brothers and sisters, eager and anxious to help us as well as poke fun at us. The seventh grade girls had Miss Elizabeth Cole, while the hoys were sponsored by Miss Loulie Ruth Vivion, both of whom have since left us, the rumor being that we drove them Itoth crazy. We organized our class with much ado, both this year and our eighth grade year, for weren’t we on the road to be the Seniors of ‘47, the most outstanding class to ever lte in H. H. S. ? One of our boys, Amos Black even rated the first team in basketball, and Bessie Tewmey and Roselyn Robertson were chosen Junior High Cheerleaders. Were we proud! In the eighth grade the boys and girls were reconciled under the sponsorship of our present sponsor, Mrs. Gritton. Graduation from the eighth grade was a memorable affair, when we were given blue diplomas signifying that we were eligible to enter HIGH SCHOOL the next fall. We were through with Junior High, and we rested from our active participation in clubs, and backing all events, until we entered school in September as the Freshman Class of ’43-’44. This year the girls and the boys were again separated, and sponsored respectively by Mrs. Gritton and Mr. Harlow. Many new members joined our class, and we were proud to at last be in High School. Our class was organized with the following officers: President—Joe Walker; Vice President—Simon Divine; Secretary—Frances McGinnis; and Tresurer—Ola Frances Balden. We were justly proud of the accomplishments we made that memorable year in athletics and club, several members of the class were officers of clubs and many of the boys came out for basketball. We--i.Av,.guished ourselves by being intramural liasketball champions. Amos Black, Pioneer Captain, was a most valuable man on the first five. Bessie Tewmey was chosen as cheerleader, wearing the precious blue and white. Betty I-yen further distinguished us by winning the State Speech Festival with a Comedy reading entitled, “China Blue Eyes.” We went even further to have the largest attendance at Bible Study in Girl Reserve and Hi-Y. We had the most outstanding class program of the year in assembly, the script for which we, ourselves, wrote in English Class under the guidance of Mrs. Alexander. We felt that we had a good start in High School, and that we were indeed on the road to success. Seniors of '47. As the Sophomore year dawned, we were honored to have as sponsors, Mrs. Gritton and Mr. Harlow. Our officers for the year were: President—Pat Long; Vice President—Eugenia Sallee: Secretary—Jessica Walter: and Treasurer—Porter Johnson. Later on in the year, however, Pat left us: Eugenia moved up into his place .and Gene Royalty was elected Vice-President. As Sophomores, we attempted a money-making scheme never before tried by a previous class. We gathered ads for, and published a basketball bulletin, and made enough money from this project to purchase $175 worth of war bonds. Again members of this class showed a great interest in sports and clubs. It took a grert deal of interest and patience on the part of M rs. Gritton and Mr. Harlow to see us through this year, but patience receives reward, and we believe that they feel justified for our having been so much trouble. Hetty Lyen again distinguished the class by winning second place in the District Contest, with a discussion on “Kentucky's State Parks.” As we came back from our vacation that following summer, with glorious tans and a habit of being lazy, we found that we were no longer “underclassmen but that we now enjoyed the rank and title of dignified Juniors. Mrs. Gritton came on with us as sponsor, but much to our sorrow, Mr. Harlow was deemed too necessary as sponsor of the up and coming Sophomore I toys. Again the whole class was re-united, and plans for a successful year started under way with the election of the following officers: President-—Gene Royalty; Vice President— Hetty Lyen; Secretary— Frances McGinnis; and Treasurer—Basil Gaither. During this year, we worked more and received the title of MOST OUTSTANDING CLASS IN SCHOOL! Our Junior play. Rosalie Rims Riot, was an outstanding success, breaking all previous box-office receipts. We were more proud than ever of our representatives on the Pioneer Team. These boys made a record of which any class would boast, and included Grosto Wells, Gene Royalty, Wilbert Bugg, Tarzan Watts, and Basil Gaither. Our Junior Paper was soon under way under the leadership of a very capable staff, and was given the title of “The Chatterbox.” Probably our most noteworthy incident during the year was the Junior and Senior Reception at Beaumont, when we entertained the Senior class with the money we had made on our paper and on selling drinks at the basketball games. We adopted a new precedent at this banquet. by having a Junior giftorian present the Seniors with timely gifts. (10c ones.) Four medals were given to Juniors at the reception. They were awarded to Betty Lyen for English and Scholarship, to Martha Jane Gortney for Activities, and for Athletics to Gene Royalty. We were proud of the record which we had built up, and at the end of the year, we had a class of 50 students who were to carry on as the Seniors of '47. And so, we come to the last chapter in our noteworthy history. We were exceedingly sorry to lose two of our classmates, one of whom was Joe Yates, who went into the service of our country. Our sponsors this year were Mrs. Gritton and Mr. Powell. They have proved true friends and advisors throughout the year and we are most grateful to them. We welcomed into our class, six boys who had felt the call of their country and had entered service before they had finished their education. They have indeed helped our Senior year to be more successful by their participation in all that we have undertaken. Six of our girls have honored their class by being members of the National Beta Club, a scholastic organization. hive of these girls were charter members of this local chapter. All of the class have participated in at least one club and many have belonged to as many as four or five. They have been leaders and good followers in every organization in which they have participated. Football was reinstated in H.H.S., and many of our boys played, while the rest of the class backed them up in the cheering section. Again we were well represented on the basketball floor, during a successful season. Dan Tuttle joined the ranks of the Cheerleaders, and has been a great help in this field. Again Betty Lyen went to the District Discussion Contest and won third place. The class was very proud to have Tarzan Watts and Ola Frances Balden selected as Football King and Queen, for the year ‘46-'47. Frances McGinnis was voted D. A. R. Representative, and other honors have gone to various other members of the class. It is with regret that we are now ready to graduate, for though we've often complained about our school, it is our Alma Mater, and we wouldn't exchange it for any other. We should like to take this time to say to all our teachers and other schoolmates that we are sincerely gratefid for all the help and support that you have given us. Always we shall remember you and all you have done for us. So now we just want to say, “Thanks a Million! We also see the activities that happened on this voyage were: The girls joined the Girl Reserve and Future Homemakers of America; the boys joined the Hi-Y Club and some played basketball. These were: John D. McClellan. F'rank DeVylder, Monty Price, Bobby Smith, Bobby Sadler and Warren Bugg. Few of the voyagers joined the I -at in Club. Barbara Daugherty was chosen as the cheer-leader to wear the school colors. The next chapter on the ship log is the recording of the Sophomore voyage. Some of their activities are: The girls joined the Y-Teens and F'.H.A. The boys joined the Hi-Y Club. Some played basketball, while others played football when it started in the fall. Like most sailboats this one is filled with people for the joy ride, others were more serious. Most of us have learned the title of “Silly Sophomores. However, to me, it seems we pause for too short a time at the harbor H.H.S. to learn enough about sailing and any other vocation we may wish to do in later life. We hope that when we are assigned to a larger ship that we are able to sail the sea with less difficulty and may end our voyage with success. We found that the cruise was not to be a pleasure trip and that we had a rough trip ahead of us. The captain and the Co-Captain were Miss Field and Mr. Whitehead. Then our officers wee relected. First officer—Barbara L. King, President; Second officer — Donald Rice, Vice-President; Third officer—Charles A. Curd, Secretary, and Fourth officer—Morris McClure, Treasurer. On the first deck of our ship you would find sports. We were well represented on this deck. Jack Clark, Robert J. Black, and Donald Rice were representatives on the basketball team, and the football team was helped by the Freshman, too. Robert J. Black and Clark were flying the flag of the Freshmen for football. Jean Sanders and Kenneth Poulter wore our colors for the cheering section from the class. If you walked on the Second deck you would find clubs. We were well represented on the club deck as well as in sports. The Jr. Y-Teens had three officers from our class: Martha Menaugh, President; Barbara L. King, Secretary, and Mary Louise Patterson, Treasurer. Nearly all the girls Itelonged to the F.H.A. Club. On the third deck were the extra activities for the class. We started on the ship with $50.00 which we won during a magazine contest. We felt proud, as we were only Freshmen. Our ship captains and crew decided on a skating party so that the class could learn co-opera- tion and have fun as well. Co-operation resulted in a talent program, presented by our class to the whole company on board the H.H.S. We hope that program charted our course to success for our plays later on. Vacation passed quickly, and we entered school again in the fall. We elected as our class officers for 1946-47: Betty Coleman, Joe Harlow. John Alexander. and lames Dean. Our class also came on top with two new cheerleaders, Mike Low-rev and Lawrence Willis. The Student Council representatives were June Burns and John Alexander. Our teachers were: Mrs. Sale. Mr. Sale. As a result, the Senior Class of 1947, was proud to present Ola Frances Balden as Queen, and Tarzan Watts as King. On December tenth, nineteen hundred and forty-six, they were crowned Miss Harrodsburg High School and Mr. Pioneer. Ola Frances Balden, as Miss H. H. S., is the most popular and best-dressed Senior gfrl. She has attended Harrodsburg High School for the last four years and during this time she has been an honor student, besides taking an active part in all the clubs in which she has been a member. Ola Frances may easily be considered an average American girl. Mr. Pioneer, better known as Tarzan Watts, is good-looking with personality plus. Yes, our Tarzan was the little fellow on the football field with all that energy. Tarzan is an all around fellow, who will go places if he keeps climbing toward the top. The King and Queen were crowned by their First Attendants, Harriet Russell and Car-lysle Garrison, from the Junior Class. He was the best offensive, because of his ability to shoot with either hand. His scoring was very high for the season. We sure hate to lose such a valuable player. WILBERT Bt'GG Guard Hugg Is right In there when It comes to those long Hhnts. Watch those points go up!! He is another one who hates to leave as bad as we hate to see him go. T. C. COLEMAN Forward and Center Mule” is our rebound specialist. He held top scoring honors for the year. T. C.. you’ve been on the all-tournament team for the past two years; we’re looking for It again next year. How about It ? ? GENE ROYALTY Guard Hollle was one of the best of defensive guards. He was not a high scorer, but he could really handle that ball. Also, he was the best when it came to setting up plays. He’s worked hard and liked it. BOB BLACK Gua rd Hob was used as the handy man of the team. He was a good reserve this season. We’re going to be watching for you next year. Bob. Get In there and fight!!! BASIL GAITHER Forward Basil was on the sidelines ready to fight for the team any time he could this year. When he was on the hardwood, he did his best. We wish you could be back next year. Basil. IRMAL TEATKK Forward and Center “Rod” is a returned veteran who joined the team this year. He has the height but maybe sometimes his mind was on that Senior girl. JACK CLARK Jack was the baby of the squad. He hasn’t had much prnctice. but just wait! ! These coming years he’ll prove to you what he can do. FOREST SALE Coach Aggie” was out there practicing and helping the boys every day. He wanted them to come through on top. The boys learned to like him and understand him. Most of the boys on Aggie’s” team were fourth year men and he looked ahead to those who would be back. EVAN HARLOW Coach Ev worked hard for the boys and in return, the boys worked for him too. When times became tough, he was always in there to give a good word. We nil appreciate it, Ev. N BASKETBALL 46 - 47 Early in the fall, the main question in the minds of all basketball lovers was, “What kind of team will Coach 'Aggie' .Sale have this year? As soon as the season opened these anxious spectators packed the gym every game night to see our team on the floor. Harrodsburg played the toughest teams in the state, including Madison, Lawrenceburg, Danville, Frankfort. Shelbyville, University High, Henry Clay, and Manual. Although our team was small compared with some of the others, they pulled through with 14 wins and 8 losses. These boys made up the team for H. H. S.: Wilbert Bugg, T. C. Coleman, Gene Royalty, Grosto Wells, Bob Black, Irmal Teater, Basil Gaither, Carlysle Garrison, Jack Clark, and Tarzan Watts. We lost Garrison and Watts at midseason. Two of the younger boys of the second team replaced them which were Donald Rice and Joe Harlow. They received excellent practice by this which will be of value to them in the future. In the District Tournament Harrodsburg was defeated by their rival, Burgin. This was a great surprise to many. Harrodsburg still had the honor of having T. C. Coleman placed on the all tournament team. The loss of Bugg. Wells, Royalty, Teater and Gaither will dim the prospects of next year s team but we know that with the excellent coaching of Sale and Harlow, the team will hold their place in the upper brackets. So here’s luck to each and everyone of you!!! WITH THE FOOTBALL TEAM This being the first team since 1942, the Pioneers were greatly handicapped by the lack of experience. There was a full schedule of nine games. Among those, Anchorage, Lawrenceburg, Shelbyville, Cvnthiana, and Lafayette were ranked as outstanding teams in the state. Coach Sale did a good job in his first year. With several experienced players back next year the number of wins should be greater although the team will be hit hard by the loss of 14 men. When the fame of our class is come and gone And our echoes are no longer heard. We will still remember our classmates And our time spent at Harrodslnirg High. W e 11 think with a smile of our happv times And sad mem Vies cause us to sigh. W e II think of the times that we disobeyed rules. By cutting our classes and such. And we II think of advice our teachers gave us 1 he things that did help us so much. But uppermost of the thoughts in our minds Is the spirit of dear H. H. S.. The spirit that taught us to fight for the right. For the right would always be best. Yes, years may come and years may go In following the pattern of time. But we’ll not forget our dear old school And our class, and each happy time That we were together through smiles and tears. Through peace, and war and suspense Of not knowing if our class would finish school For some were called to our country's defense. So, we cried when they had to leave us. And rejoiced when they returned. And somehow in that time we seemed to grow up. And many a lesson was learned. • But now we've nearly finished our course. And commencement time comes soon. We’ll graduate, and leave our school. In the beautiful month of June. Sure, we may leave, but will we forget? You can bet your life that we shan't! For twelve years together means a lot And forget it. you just can’t! We’re the Class of '47 We're united through thick and thin. And we're determined that whatever results, We'll stick together, and win! Martha Jane Gortney Poet fya iewell Farewell! ! As we close the cloor behind us and walk into the distant future, toe the graduating class of 1947, bid our classmates and teachers a fond goodbye. And from the bottom of our hearts we say “thanks” in a special way.
