Page 30 THE HARRODIAN 1941 JUNIOR HISTORY In September, 1938, we timidly climbed on the covered wagon, after finishing our year’s struggle in the ox cart of elementary studies. This year proved to be full of excitement, enthusiasm, and achievement despite the fact that we were, in the eyes of our upperclassmen, merely green freshmen. The monotony of this year was broken by an occasional basketball or football game. In May, our annual picnic day was spent in Lexington at Woodland Park and at a movie. After our summer vacation, we returned and with more confidence, boarded the steamboat which, more or less smoothly, bore us over the waves of our Sophomore year. Instead of one day for a picnic, we were given a two day’s vacation so that our basketball team could participate in the annual invitational tournament at Duke University. When our steamboat reached its destination, among our baggage were found some valuable souvenirs; such as. a check to Sallie Hogue for an essay contest prize and an award given Tom Moore for making the highest average in high school. The fall of 1940 found most of our students ready to board the train for the third lap of the journey. We started traveling with the election of our class officers. At the throttle was Tom Moore, chosen for his lcvcl-headcdness and discretion, as well as for his ability. His able assistants, Vivian Isham, Nancy Woods and Dale Bonta, occupied the back seat and from time to time gave advice and valuable suggestions. A bulletin of our progress and experiences was issued bi-monthly so that our parents and friends might know where we were and what we were doing. In order to defray expenses of the trip, we resorted to the sale of soft drinks which netted us a reasonable sum. This money, together with the proceeds from “Mama’s Baby Boy,” the annual Junior dramatic production, was applied to the fund set aside for the Junior-Senior Reception Stop-Over. Now as we approach the end of the rails, we must soon unload and await the time when we shall continue our journey by plane. SALLIE HOGUE.
