As we started out we were all excited and did not know just what to expect, but our confidence grew as the end of the first lap of our struggle drew near. All in all, the first lap was a great success and one to which we point with pride. Many of our classmates excelled in scholarship, athletics, and dramatics, some promise of better things was given by a few. In September, 1938, we boarded the steamboat which was to carry us over Sophomore River for the next few months. After everyone was aboard, we found that three of our number, all being young ladies, had fallen off into the deep sea of matrimony. We were saddened by the death of one of our best liked boys as he left us to journey on in that better world beyond. This lap of our journey was smoother and easier than the previous one since we knew what was to be done and how to do it. We had boys on the football and basketball teams. We took part in all the school activities, including a play, dramatics and acting of different types. When we left the steamboat to board the train which was to carry us on our Junior Journey, we looked back on our two years in High School Land with pride. As our train left the station we took on new duties and responsibilities, the greatest of which was to give the Seniors a reception at the end of the year. In order to do this we worked hard all year, editing a school paper, selling soft drinks, and giving the Junior Play which was a great success. As the third lap drew to a close and our train drew in at the station, we looked back and found that we had successfully accomplished all our tasks and were now ready for the last quarter of our trip. In the modern transport plane. Senior Days, we started on the last lap of our thrilling journey which had already given us so much pleasure. We decided to make the Senior part of our journey the most outstanding in choosing our class officers and members of the annual staff. Each member of the senior class attacked his duties vigorously. The football and basketball team worked hard to give us their best, our class officers lead us well, the annual staff showed great ability in producing the yearbook. We had some excellent scholars and our dramatic club made good records in school days and in tournament competition. Our Senior Play was even a greater success than our Junior Play had been. As our plane glided gently to land at Education Field, Harrodsburg, Kentucky, May 30, 1941, we were sorry that we had reached the end of our journey, but there were other duties waiting for us as the citizens of tomorrow. Yes, our voyage is over, but what memories it leaves! What a world of strength and wealth it will be to us; what a guide and foundation it will be in choosing our life’s work. It will be a pride and joy to us forever. We must leave now, but in days to follow we will never forget our High School days and those who have made them possible. To our parents and our teachers we owe a great debt of gratitude and to them we give our sincerest thanks. To the world before us we say, “Hello,”; to those who follow us, Best wishes for the same joys and successes that we have had.” And now a closing thought: O Classmates! My Classmates! This happy voyage is done, The bell I hear, The port is near. The people all are shouting A glad and cheerful welcome to the Class of ’41. EVERETT NOEL. Page 24 THE HARRODIAN 1941 1941 THE HARRODIAN Page 25 Page 26 THE HARRODIAN 1941 CLASS WILL We, the Class of 1941, in fifty-five individual and distinct parts, being about to pass out of this sphere of education, in full possession of a thoroughly crammed mind, well-trained memory, and most superhuman understanding, do make and publish this, our last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all former wills or promises by us at any time heretofore made, or mayhap carelessly spoken, one to the other, as the thoughtless wish of an idle hour. As to such estate as it has pleased the Fates and our own strong hands and brains to win for us, we do dispose of the same as follows: Item: The Senior Class wills and bequeaths to the all-wise Junior Class the important question which concerns the Annual—“To Be Or Not To Be.” Item: To our good friends, the Sophomore Class, we leave our patience. It will be found useful as the only means by which they can endure the Juniors. Item: To the Freshmen we give the basement to be used as the official parking place for all kiddie cars, tricycles, and milk bottles. Item: To the young and unsophisticated Junior High we leave a map of the school building, so that they will not get lost and roam about in everybody’s way looking for classrooms. Item: We give and bequeath to our dear superintendent and faculty all the amazing knowledge and startling information that we have furnished them from time to time in our various examination papers. We know that much which we have imparted to them in this way must have been entirely new to them and has thrown new light on many a hitherto familiar line of thought. Item: We also leave to our faculty a sweet unbroken succession of restful nights and peaceful dreams. No longer need they lie awake through the long watches of the night to worry over the uncertainty of whether we are performing all our necessary study activities. Item: The following may seem but trifling bequests, but we hope they may be accepted, not as worthless things lavishly thrown away because we can no longer keep them, but as valuable assets to those who may receive them, and a continual reminder of the generosity of heart displayed in our free and full bestowal: 1st To “Squeeze” Squifflet, Lois Gordon’s quiet charm. 2nd To Alex VanArsdall, Billy Goddard’s ability to talk incessantly with the solemn admonition that he make a practical use of that talent. 3rd To Mr. Powell, the mathematical ability of our class, to be distributed according to his wise judgment. 4th To Johnny Woodard, Jack Frost’s calmness and power of concentration. 5th To Ralph Youmans and Richard Conover, “Scorp” Sullivan’s wit to be divided between them. 6th To William Wells, Everett Noel’s absentmindedness. 7th To Billy Ruth Pitchford, Mary Ann Stagg’s ability to be on time. 8th To Jane Brown, Jane Coyle's beauty secrets. 9th To the highest bidder, Martha Hansen’s southern drawl. 10th To Johnny Goldston, C. B. Yates’ strong silent type. 11th To Clyde Demaree, Billy Bob Edger’s recipe for a perfect diet. 1941 THE HARRODIAN Page 27 12th To Tom Moore, Kenneth Mitchell’s radical beliefs and his ability to wander around the point in French Class. 13th To Sandidge Wilson, Anne Mary Simms’ prized possession, the book “How to Get Your Man and Hold Him.” 14th To Mildred Ellars, Mildred Hatchett’s interest in Johnny Goldston. May the Mildreds’ carry on! 15th To the Cheer Leaders, the noise created by the Senior Class, to be used only at ball games. lGth To all the up and coming Clark Gables, Jimmy Keightley’s ability to make love on the stage. 17th To Vivian Isham, Frances Hoard’s arguing technique. 18th To Rosalind Donovan, Virginia Balden’s ambition. 19th To Dudley Crutcher, J. W. Sims’ collection of telephone numbers, license numbers, house numbers, and love letters. 20th To the Junior girls who wish to use it, the booth at Dedman’s that the Senior girls occupied. 21st To the 1942 basketball team, Chester Scott’s and Roy Sallee’s markmanship in throwing erasers. Besides these bequests, we leave our best wishes to any and all who may desire them. Finally, we do hereby name and appoint as the sole executor of this, our last will and testament, our ever persevering superintendent with the admonition that he administer this estate to the best of his ability. In witness whereof, we, the class ol 1941, the testator, have set our hand and seal on this the thirtieth day of May, in the year 1941. FRANCES BOARD. cu President----- Vice President Secretary----- Treasurer----- ... Tom Moore Vivian Isham .Nancy Woods ... Dale Bonta Page 30 THE HARRODIAN 1941 JUNIOR HISTORY In September, 1938, we timidly climbed on the covered wagon, after finishing our year’s struggle in the ox cart of elementary studies. This year proved to be full of excitement, enthusiasm, and achievement despite the fact that we were, in the eyes of our upperclassmen, merely green freshmen. The monotony of this year was broken by an occasional basketball or football game. In May, our annual picnic day was spent in Lexington at Woodland Park and at a movie. After our summer vacation, we returned and with more confidence, boarded the steamboat which, more or less smoothly, bore us over the waves of our Sophomore year. Instead of one day for a picnic, we were given a two day’s vacation so that our basketball team could participate in the annual invitational tournament at Duke University. When our steamboat reached its destination, among our baggage were found some valuable souvenirs; such as. a check to Sallie Hogue for an essay contest prize and an award given Tom Moore for making the highest average in high school. The fall of 1940 found most of our students ready to board the train for the third lap of the journey. We started traveling with the election of our class officers. At the throttle was Tom Moore, chosen for his lcvcl-headcdness and discretion, as well as for his ability. His able assistants, Vivian Isham, Nancy Woods and Dale Bonta, occupied the back seat and from time to time gave advice and valuable suggestions. A bulletin of our progress and experiences was issued bi-monthly so that our parents and friends might know where we were and what we were doing. In order to defray expenses of the trip, we resorted to the sale of soft drinks which netted us a reasonable sum. This money, together with the proceeds from “Mama’s Baby Boy,” the annual Junior dramatic production, was applied to the fund set aside for the Junior-Senior Reception Stop-Over. Now as we approach the end of the rails, we must soon unload and await the time when we shall continue our journey by plane. Our driver and his helpers were: Donald Davenport, Alex VanArsdall, Bessie Spaulding, and Joy Ann Potter. The trail was unfamiliar, but, because of markers left by those who preceeded us, we slowly approached the landing where the steamboat was waiting to take us farther on our way. In September, 1940, we pulled away from the H. H. S. wharf for the second lap of the journey. We elected, the following to be our Sophomore pilots: Alex VanArsdall, President; Cecil Watts, Vice President; Jane Threlkeld, Secretary; Morris Peavler, Treasurer. While we were on our journey, we docked long enough to see a few football and basketball games. The boys showed that with a little experience and practice they would become excellent players. The Sophomores who made letters in football were Clifford Black, Dillard Gibson. W. D. Wilder, and George Bruner. In basketball Morris Peavler and Clifford Black were our letter men. We also enjoyed other entertainments. Many of the class attended the Girl Reserves and Hi-Y Clubs. A number of Sophomores were active members in the Latin Club, Glee Club, and Home Economics Club. We were well represented in the Dramatic Club by Miriam Ellers and Alex VanArsdall. Now that we have reached our destination and are ready to leave our steamboat, we see the train waiting at the station to take us on the next lap of our journey. Glenn Ray Page 38 THE HARRODIAN 1941 FRESHMAN HISTORY Encouraged by comments from a few friendly seniors suggesting that the dangers we would encounter were not as perilous as reputed, we climbed aboard the covered wagon on September 4, 1940, and seated ourselves in the back as lowly but proud pioneers. Out of the confusion of the first week’s excitement came rules and schedules. At the suggestion of our guides, Miss Trower and Mr. Almond, we held an election. After the aye’s anti nay’s were hushed, it was discovered that the following officers had been elected to guide the destiny of the covered wagon train across the wilderness of education: Reva Wells. President; Nancy Glass. Vice President; H. L. Peav- ler, Secretary; Glenn Ray. Treasurer. We also sought advice from the early travelers of this path, our teachers whom we love and admire. Having acquired the necessary books and materials to guide our course, we settled down to our intellectual journey. To prevent the monotony which comes with the slowly but steadily moving wagon wheels, we often turned aside for games of sport. When the call sounded for football, Pioneer W. D. Veatch responded and showed promising ability when he played in two games. Many travelers on the covered wagon came out to the football games; and we had a good membership in the H. A. A., with Celia Moore representing us as treasurer of that organization. Once again we settled down to work with the results that sometimes our names led all the rest on the scholastic honor roll. But then came that second call—the call for basketball. When the echoes of this call had died away, we found that those of our freshman team with winning ability were: E. G. Duncan, J. C. Powell, David Reed, Jack Park, Carlos Dennis, Junior Harris. H. L. Peavler and Herbert Parker. Our sports history would not be complete without mentioning our cheerleader, “Pud” Smith, who was the unanimous choice of all our fellow-travelers. Our members have become part of the Latin Club, Glee Club, Girl Reserves, Hi-Y Club and Dramatic Club. The first lap of our journey has been covered, and we believe we will reach the end successfully, even though there have been cares as well as joys that have drawn us closer together in common love and loyalty to the Blue and White. With eager anticipation, we are looking forward to the second lap of the journey toward our destination—‘Seniors, 1944. Without the ox cart, the covered wagon could never have been. Without the Junior High and its period of development, there could never be a successful high school. The classc.'i of the Junior High are held in a special wing which was added to the building in 1931. There, under the guidance of four excellent teachers, Miss Cole, Miss Keith, Mrs. Gritton, and Mr. Dennis, the ox cart makes its way along. At the present time there are 132 pupils enrolled. We look forward to the day when we shall win our wings as seniors. NANCY LEE MILWEE. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Anderson, Nancy Ruth Anderson, Oma Louise Asher, Barbara Jean Asher, Donald Bailey. Our team was also handicapped by lack of experience, for, at the beginning of the season, Coach Goranflo had only two regulars returning to start the first game. The Pioneers brushed aside all difficulties and upset a strong eleven from Irvine in opening their schedule. They were victorious over four teams, namely: Irvine, M. M. I.. Stanford anti Lawrenceburg but were also defeated by the same number. These strong teams included Danville. Somerset, Versailles and Shelbyvillc. Although the Pioneers will be hit hard by the loss of eleven lettermen by graduation, a successful year is predicted for Harrodsburg’s gridiron in 1941. FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Irvine VVE 6 THEY 0 M. M. I. K. C. teams, since the Pioneers were handicapped by the loss of four of the five regulars of last year’s conference winners. Basketball lovers’ hearts were surprised and thrilled when the team came through a tough schedule with a record of eleven wins against eight losses. Lawrenceburg’s C. K. C. Champions suffered their only conference defeat w'hen the Pioneers overpowered them in one of the first games of the season. The Pioneers lose four men by graduation and the eight semester rule, but everyone is looking forward to seeing the Big Blue in action again next year.
