PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF HARRISVILLE CENTRAL SCHOOL HARRISVILLE, NEW YORK 13648 Yearbook Staff (from left) front: Laura Luther, Trina Collette, Deneen Burr, Vicky Bango, Barry Dusharm; back: Susan Smith, Chris Craft, Aaron Clark, Joel Clark. Amy Benney, Donna Collette, Brenda Ward, About twenty-five students from grades nine through twelve expressed a desire to join the 1982 PIRATES LOG staff but about half were forced to withdraw because of schedule conflicts. The nucleus which survived is responsible, in great part, for collecting and arranging the various material needed to produce a meaningful yearbook. The cover of this year's edition features a Kodalith print of the old school we shall soon be leaving. Our thanks to Mr. Sherwood Smith, photo-art teacher at Potsdam Central School, for his help in printing this photograph for us. The 1982 PIRATES LOG staff also wishes to extend its thanks to Mr. LeBlanc of our staff for once again advising us. It is due to his efforts, to a great extent, that we are able to produce our yearbook. Mr. LeBlanc and Joel Clark, this year's business manager, are pictured at the left. Dedication 1982 MRS. SHIRLEY DUSHARM The 1982 PIRATES LOG Staff and the Harrisville Central School are justly proud to dedicate this edition, the twenty- ninth, to Mrs. Shirley Dusharm. Mrs. Dusharra, on the staff since 1964, has given of her time and talent again and again on behalf of the student body and her colleagues. Sincerest gratitude and congratulations are extended to her. May she be with us many more years. Unfortunately, these were the only statistics available either locally or from the NAC secretary. It would appear that the Lady Pirates had a successful season although they did not win their division. Miss Kathy Felio of the Physical Education staff coached the girls. Although some of the more experienced players have graduated, the prospects for the 1981-1982 season are fairly bright since the talent among this year's Freshmen class seems to be a little better than average. A sudden death goal by Ed McIntosh, his second goal of the contest, gave the Pirates a 2-1 victory. A total of twelve students filed a declaration of intention to join the school's Whiz Quiz team. From this group, eight were selected as finalists. A special competition was held to select the four who would actually compete. The four successful candidates were Barry Dusharm, Matt O'Bryan, Joel Clark, and Gordon Burr. Alternates were Dawn Ogrodnik, Aaron Clark, Bruce Williams, Chris Dashnaw, and Leanne Frazee. Mr. Tarr and Mr. LeBlanc acted as faculty advisers. On November 17, 1981, the group traveled to WNPE-WNPI in Watertown to tape their match against rival Morristown. The contest seesawed but, at the final bell, Morristown had eked out a 180-160 victory. Wait till next year! Now that we have been under the lights once, we hope to go all the way in 1982-83! Nine In Talented Juniors Program front: Julie Eggleston, Dee Bovee, Tina Dowling, Laura Collette, Linda Canfield; back: Teresa Dusharm, Dean Richards, Matt O'Bryan, and Tim LaDuc. A program designed to introduce Juniors to non-credit college courses is sponsored annually by the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES and offered on the campus of St. Lawrence University each Saturday for a period of ten weeks. To qualify for this special program, a Junior must have been listed on the school's honor roll a minimum of two of the four marking periods during his sophomore year. Class ranking is also taken into consideration. Among this year's nine members of the Class of 1983 were Linda Canfield, Laura Collette, and Matthew O'Bryan. These three Juniors were enrolled in a computer course. Julie Eggleston and Teresa Dusharm registered for a course in Human Behavior. Tim LaDuc and Dean Richards elected to pursue a course in limnology, i.e., fresh water ecology. Tina Dowling and Dee Bovee enrolled in a course titled Radio and Television. The students left Harrisville Central School at 8:30 each Saturday morning and returned around noon.. There is no need to stress the importance of this program. It makes available the resources of a fine university to high school students and provides them with an opportunity to expose themselves to programs which are not readily available in our school or the other schools of the North Country. It also allows them to meet talented students of other schools and make new friends. Mr. Gary Hinsdale is in charge of the selection process and supervises' the students' participation. On November 21 and December 5, a Bowl-a-thon in support of Jerry Lewis' kids was spon- sored by the Bon-Har-Dia Lanes. A total of twenty-four students raised over seven hundred dollars to help those stricken with muscular dystrophy. Tina LaFave, with pledges totaling over one hundred forty-two dollars, led the group. Mandy Taylor was second. Rod Fraser and Brad Clement are also to be congratulated for their efforts. For each dollar raised, the name of the student was entered in a ten-sneed Bicycle drawing. The lucky and surprised winner was Ralph Ward. Although it was winter, Ralph lost no time in assembling his new bike. The Marching Band, like the many other band units, is seen in performance throughout the year. Unlike the other ensembles, however, which rehearse and perform during the course of the school year, the Marching Band and its sup- porting units, i.e., the Pom-Pons, the Gun Corps, the Front Line and Flags, and the Majorettes, are called upon for parades during the summer months. Practice for the parade season starts in the spring and continues until the end of the summer. The general excellence of the group is easily recognized by the number of prizes it has brought back to Harrisville. Its success is in great part due to the many hours of practice under the direction of Mr. Luttinger and Mrs. Hoover.
