A Retirement Mrs. Avis Cring Tempus fugit! reads the inscription on the sundial nestled among the flowers in the peaceful garden. These words are noted with little attention until, suddenly and perhaps painfully, one stands at the threshhold of retirement. For Mrs. Cring, that moment is at hand after a long and dedicated career as mathematic teacher, a career which started in 1947. The Pirates Log staff joins the administration, the faculty, and the student body in extending to Mrs. Cring its best wishes for a long and rewarding retirement. Donna Michelle Bobbi Tim Junior Prom King Queen On May 17, 1980, the Class of 1981 staged its Junior Prom in the High School gymnasium. The gym was tastefully and artistically decorated to reflect the colors of the rainbow, the class colors. Corsages of baby carnations highlighted the class flower. King and queen for the event were Tim Wood and Sandra Smith, who were crowned by 1979 King Randy Patnode and Queen Anne Fuller. Eight members of the class completed the royal court. After much picture taking, the royal couple led the guests into the traditional coronation dance. Music for the evening's dancing was provided by Love Street, an ensemble composed of two guitarists, a pianist, and a drummer. Girls from the Junior High served the guests refreshments, a variety of old-fashioned cookies and punch. Royal Court ROYAL COURT: Lynne Fuller, Carla Collette, Juliann Baker, Michelle Weir, Queen Sandra Smith, King Tim Wood, Keith Hoover, Tim Davison, Richard Davison, and Jeff Miller. Below are two of the many young and older couples who attended the 1980 Junior Prom. The Class of 1981 extends its thanks to all who made the event a success. It also expresses its gratitude to Mr. Fraser, Miss Finch, and Mr. Tarr, class advisers, for their valuable help in supervising the preparations for the prom. f —'- ! Steve Valentine, to Ed Cochran, his hunting experience and trapping know-how. Mike Ward, to those who may have difficulty smiling, his engaging smile. Michelle Weir, to brother Mark, her share of mother's nagging and complaining. Bobbi Wicks, claiming to be greedy, takes all with her to enjoy forever, and ever, and ever, and ever, and maybe longer. Donna Wood, to Laurie Wood, whatever is left of the car. Tim Wood, to some lucky student, his place by the vending machines. Junior High sports took another step forward this year to maintain the school's reputation as one of the athletic bastions of the North Country with the introduction of girls' basketball. The girls, under the coaching of Miss Felio, practiced regularly to develop those basic skills which are needed to assure success in this sport. Junior High boys also continued to improve their skill and knowledge of the game by serious practice and competition with neighboring schools. The size of the teams would seem to indicate that interest in the sport has not diminished. Mr. Rod Parow provided the leadership and instruction needed. Although basketball is the big one at H.C.S., other sports were not neglected as soccer, softball, and baseball received their share of attention. Carla Collette called the roll, Janine Bassettte presented each new member with a membership card and certificate, and Michelle Weir administered the oath. The mothers of the new members pinned their son or daughter. Girls from Mrs. Hoover's Foods class waited on tables. Several ladies from the cafeteria staff prepared the turkey dinner. Pictures of the group were taken and forwarded to area news- papers by Mr. LeBlanc, faculty adviser. Mrs. Oates, a graduate member of the Society, accompanied her husband. Student Council Paula Maxwell headed the Student Council during the 1980-81 school year. Other officers were Gordon Burr, vice- president, Deneen Burr, secretary, and Victoria Bango, treasurer. Mrs. Dusharm and Mr. Breindel served as faculty advisers. The Student Council continued many of its traditional activities again this year. Its members raised and lowered the flag daily and led the student body in the pledge to the flag. It also sponsored roller- skating sessions. Its pizza sale is scheduled for early spring. During the week preceding the Christmas break, it staged its Christmas door contest and sponsored a movie for the student body. Its members were instrumental in determining the menu for the Christmas dinner. The Council also acted as an advisory body in the revision of rules for basketball bus trips.
