The Pirates Log staff joins the Board of Education, the Chief Administrator, the Faculty, and other staff members in congratulating the voting public of the Harrisville Central School District for their foresight and concern for the education of our youth in approving the bond issue (473 to 93) presented to them on December 11, 1979. The new facility, the floor plan and exterior of which can be seen on the title page, will, for many years, be a proud memorial to all who supported the district's efforts to provide the best possible education to area youths. Sincerest thanks are extended to all who worked to make this project possible. The seventh grade, the Class of 1985, numbered fifty-three students. In a very few short days, most of them had adjusted to being the smallest people around. The Class of 1982 is the smallest class in high school. It numbered only forty students. It does, however, have a number of students who have a very promising future academically if they do not falter along the way and continue to achieve to their fullest potential. In the upper left photo, Reto was a special guest at the National Honor Society induction dinner. The photos at the right show Reto playing cards, receiving his box of coal from St. Nicholas, and helping to keep score at a soccer game. The picture below is of Reto at his locker at the start of the school day. His school day included several courses in English, French, and psychology. During his leisure moments, he spent much of his time in the senior lounge perfecting his basic conversational skills. Lunch was taken in the school's cafeteria with the student body. We have the impression that Reto was not displeased with the routine in an American school. f I 46 Swiss Exchange Student Spends Year With Us Pictured above is the family of Mr. and Mrs. Duggan, their son, Steve, and Reto. Reto is one of six Children of Herr and Frau Werner Rollin, restaurateurs in • the city of Windisch, Switzerland, a community of some eight thousand inhabitants. Reto and' his twin brother, Kurt, are nineteen. He has two younger brothers, Werner and Wilhelm, and two younger sisters, Erika and Monika. Following the completion of his mandatory education, Reto began an apprentice- ship in the commercial field with the administrative cadre of a town. His plans call for a career as a social worker, a position which will require three additional years of training including one year in the practical aspects of the job. He must also acquire a sound mastery of the English language, a requirement which his stay in Harrisville has certainly made a great deal easier. We wish him much success and thank him for the many hours of meaningful enjoyment which he brought us. Reto, it has been a pleasure having you with us. 47 Anna Ward 90.9481 (G) Scholastic Leaders Tammy Lesperance Jennifer Campbell Terri Evans 90.8125 (A) 90.7867 (A) 87.5316 (V) In addition to the four scholastic leaders pictured above, the following have maintained a seven-semester average of 85.0 or better. Nursing Scholarship alter- nates were Lori Bosma, Tim Dashnaw, Tammy Lesperance, and Russ Wood. National Merit Scholarship Finalist Word was received on February 19, 1980, that Kevin Burgess, pictured on the left with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Burgess, had been named a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Kevin joins 14,000 other Finalists, of whom 3,300 will be selected as recipients of four-year Merit Scholarships. Selection as a Finalist, and later possibly as a recipient of a Merit Scholarship is an achievement attained by less than one percent of graduating Seniors throughout the United States. Kevin becomes the first student of Harrisville Central School to be recognized as a Finalist as a result of his proof of high potential for future academic attainment in the 1980 competition. Congratulations are extended to Kevin and his parents. 48 Class of 1980 FRANK BANGO JV Basketball 9-10. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Senior Class Will We, the Class of 1980, making no claim to sanity, do will and bequeath the following goods and chattels, talents and abilities, to the parties mentioned to use or dispose as each may see fit: Dennis Baker, to Brian Burgess, his autographed photo of Guy LaFleur and a chunk of Forum ice. Frank Bango, to Terry Luther, one year's supply of E-Z Widers. Roll on! Lori Bosma, to Janine Bassette, an impassioned plea to carry on her infectious smile , especially in Math classes. Kevin Burgess, to a lazy Junior, his punctuality, somewhat the worse from disuse. Garry Butts, to Richard Davison, his weights and pulleys. Amy Branagan, having taken stock of her belongings, finds nothing to leave. Jennifer Campbell, to Sandi Smith, an alarm clock guaranteed to get her to her music lessons on time. Dianne Clement, under the pretense that no one wants any of her possessions, takes all with her. Cynette Cleveland Ames, to Bobbi Hooper, all she can get out of H.C.S., which may not require too large a box to cart away. James Cole, to all the Juniors, his key to success: a bottle opener. Danny Collette, to Tracy Lancor, his ability to quit, together with his collection of empties. Tim Dashnaw, to some clumsy underclassman, his knack for falling up a flight of stairs. Terri Evans, to Donna Wood, her nickname Fred , thus making her usurpation of the title official. Dale Ford, to Mark Benson, a little of his height . Anne Fuller, to sister Lynne, a dozen library books and a burned-out sixty watt bulb. Lisa Grigg, to sister April, a compass so she can find her way home by ten o'clock. David Hobart, to Jeff Cole, his luck with cars and lifetime towing service, just in case his luck runs out. Patrick Hooley, to any Junior, anything left growing in the bottom of his locker. Linda LaBow, to Terry Luther, a bushel of apples. Denis LaParr, to Sam Weaver, his secret M. 0. on how to skip study halls without getting caught. Kim LayBoult, to sister Rhonda, all her English classes, her English notes, but not her term papers. Tammy Lesperance, to Karen Hoover, the best side of the soccer field. April Liscum, to Kris Ekberg, her charm and sneakiness so she can one day be as good as she. Kenny Malbeuf, to Tim LaDuc, his great goals on the goal line. Kevin Mallette, to Dorn Bango, a full drum of second-hand motor oil. Debbie Miller, to Angie Bango, a duplicate of her high school diploma. Treg Miller, to Carla Collette, twenty-five cents. Bruce Parow, to Tracy Lancor, a compass programmed to point home at all times. Randy Patnode, to Tim Wood, his cast, a sure-fire device to escape soccer practice. Terri Phillips, to Robin Rounds, a title beloved and cherished by all Seniors, that of stuck-up Senior. Michelle Ritz just leaves happily with ne'er a glance backward. Reto Rollin, to Steve Duggan, a whole deck of Aces . Beth Seymour, to Tori Bechler, a pillow and a pair of ear plugs for the BOCES bus rides. Joe Sibley, to Keith Hoover, his left foot for use as a left halfback next year. Deanna Swem, to Julie Baker, her ability to do a cartwheel split without hitting a spectator. Anna Ward, to Candie Evans and Jody Eggleston, her superior driving ability, a wrap-around padded bumper, and the loudest siren available. Tammy Weaver takes all with her to enjoy later. Todd Weaver, to Riki Blundon and John Miller, two tickets to the next Jethro Tull concert. Tony Williams, to Mike Ward, his merit badges, a moldy sleeping bag, and three tent pegs. Russ Wood, to Robert Ford, his telephone bills for calls to Natural Bridge. Charles Ziegler, to science, the good part of his brain but, should they refuse it, Kris is welcome to it. An overall sectional champion will be crowned on Saturday, March 8, 1980. Since we are unable every year to bring to our readers the final stages of the basketball season, we thought it might be of interest if we gave a resume of what has happened during the previous two seasons. In 1977-78, we defeated Parishville 78-44 for the C-D crown, then lost to Massena 56-61 for the A-B-C-D title. In the intersectionals, after a first round bye, we outscored New Berlin 90-62 to move into the NYSPHAA champion- ship round in Rochester. We bowed to Pierson 65-77 in the first round. In 1978-79, the Pirates captured the D title with victories over Hammond (83-52) and Morristown (70-61). We lost the C-D contest in overtime 69-75 to Heuvelton. In the intersectionals, we defeated Roxbury 66-60 and Brookfield 73-45 to move into NYSHSAA play for the second year. We bowed to Argyle 43-50 in the first round. The Pirates took home top honors in the First Annual Community Savings Bank Holiday Tourney held at JCC December 27 and 28, 1979. Three Pirates were named to the All-Tourney Team: Dave Hobart, Garry Butts, and Todd Weaver (pictured above). Todd was named the tourney's MVP for his outstanding performance.
