Representatives Officers of the Student Council were elected to their office in the spring of 1978 by vote of the student body. Representatives were chosen shortly after the start of classes in September. Once again the organization un- dertook several projects which it had successfully sponsored in years past. Among these were the staging of a short Christmas assembly and the lighting of a Memory Tree on the front lawn of the school. It continued its involvement in the AFS exploratory committee and set up a committee to help in the selection of supervisory personnel for the contemplated Youth Com- mission Program. Its major program for the year was the purchase of new flags for the various rooms of the Junior- Senior High School. Its officers alternated in leading the pledge to the flag at the start of the day and the representatives took turns in raising the school flag every morning. Among its projects for the spring of this year are pizza sales and roller-skating parties. If productions of past years are any indication of what we might expect, we are then to be treated to a most enjoyable evening of comedy. Unfortunately, we are unable to feature actual production pictures since our last deadline falls several weeks before M A S H is presented to the public. A Very Special Page A Retirement Mrs. Jane Scott, pictured at the left, is retiring from the Harrisville Central School staff after twenty-three years of dedicated service. Mrs. Scott, who joined the faculty in the fall of 1955, has taught first grade for most of her career. A graduate of State University College, Potsdam, which granted her a Bachelor of Science degree, Mrs. Scott began her teaching career in Fort Covington in 1945. Before coming to Harrisville, she also taught in Hogansburg and in the Wells District, Pitcairn. Her husband, Wilfred, served on the Harrisville Central School District Board of Education for a number of years. Mr. and Mrs. Scott are the parents of two daughters, Connie and Cheryl. Harrisville Central School is losing one of its most dedicated faculty members with the retirement of Mrs. Scott. We wish her many happy years of retirement. An Eagle Scout Anthony Williams, flanked by his proud parents in the photo above, reached the dream of every Scout, the rank of Eagle Scout, and was formally received into this select group at a special Court of Honor, Wednesday, February 14, 1979. Since becoming a Cub Scout in 1970 in Antwerp's Troop 47, Tony has demonstrated superior qualities of leadership, for which he has been awarded numerous honors and has been selected to attend a number of leadership programs. We are proud that he reached his goal while a resident of the Harrisville area. Congratulations to you, Tony, and to your parents. At the far right is Mr. Mason, of Watertown, who conducted the Court of Honor ceremony which saw Tony become what is perhaps Harrisville's first Eagle Scout. COUNTY GOVERNMENT EDUCATION MONTH Chris Hoover was selected from the Lake Bonaparte Chapter of the National Honor Society to represent Harrisville Central School in Lewis County's County Government Education Month held during November 1978. As our representative, she shadowed County Legislator Gary Buckingham, with whom she is pictured. The month began with a student participants' seminar held in the county seat, Lowville. Throughout the month, Chris accompanied Mr. Buckingham to com- mittee meetings. Finally, student parti- cipants shared in the December meeting of the county legislature. Her assessment of the experience is that it was a most enrich- ing activity which substantially added to her appreciation of the county legislative process. Class of 1979 Regents Scholarship winners were once again this year based on a student's performance in the SAT. Three of the thirty-six members of this year's graduating class were named winners: Scott Baker, Linda Simmons, and Kathy Wicks. In addition, five Seniors were named to the Alternate's List: Sherry Benson (12th), Kevin Buck- ingham (14th), Howard Hooper (17th), Kim Fraser (18th), and Chris Hoover (22nd). We congratulate all for their accomplishment. Since we went to press last year before winners and alternates were announced, we would like to state for the record that Michael Wicks was a winner. Michael Valentine, second alternate, was later moved up to the winners' list. Other alter- nates were Paul Richer (16th) and Lynne Ford (19th). Again this year, several art works done by high school students were submitted in the MONY Scholastic Art Award competition in Syracuse. Pictured at the left is Linda LaBow, two of whose entries were judged of superior quality and awarded Gold Keys. The first of her prize- winning entries was titled For Now... and was done in tempera paints on black background in mosaic-like style. The second was a crayon rendition of Indian corn titled Time . Our congratulations go to all who submitted works and especially to Linda for her artistic achieve- ment .
