19 8 FOREWORD I Publication of the PIRATES LOG started twenty-five years ago at the urging of Mr. Harold LaBarge, then principal of Harrisville Central School. As we glance over past issues, we are able to note the progress which our school's yearbook has made in the scope and quality of its content. Much of this progress is due to the efforts and guidance of its only adviser over this quarter century, Mr. LeBlanc. This year's staff, with the help of the yearbook media classes, surveyed the years which the PIRATES LOG has covered. It has recorded throughout this volume the results of its findings by featuring lists which are intended to give a concise picture of what has happened since the fall of 1953. Some of these lists are incomplete since the facts were not available. Also, some lists, such as a complete roster of the Seniors who have graduated during the last twenty-five years, have been purposely omitted since their inclusion would have required several pages, pages which the staff felt should be devoted to the coverage of this year's events. Finally, maiden names have been used rather than married ones. An attempt was made to uncover the married names but the impossibility of the task was soon discovered. It is the staff's fondest hope that you will enjoy this trip through the past as you leaf through the 1978 PIRATES LOG. PIRATES LOG STAFF (from left) front: Anna Ward, Lori Bosma, Daphne Richardson, Caroline Stott, Laura Griffith, Carla Collette, Jody Eggleston; second row: Jennifer Campbell, Lynne Fuller, Tgjnmy Lesperance, Diane Ward, Debbie Hamlin, Nora Clark, Barbara Collette, Debbie Lesperance; third row: Matt LaParr, Brenda Wood, Kathy Wicks, Terri Evans, Sherry Benson, Sue Cowan, Kenny Malbeuf, Craig Luther; back: Thomas Valentine, Howard Hooper, Dale Ford, Kevin Buckingham, Jon Bassette, Michael Wicks, Kevin Gale, Marty Buckingham, Michael Valentine, Paul Richer. Absent for picture: Lynne Ford, Peggy Dooley, Susan Brown, Jennien Seymour. Mr. LeBlanc advises the yearbook staff. DEDICATION The PIRATES LOG staff and the Harrisville Teachers' Association are most happy to dedicate this Silver Anniversary issue of the PIRATES LOG to the four faculty members pictured above: Mrs. Avis Cring, Mrs. Berta Langs, Mrs. Virginia St. Law- rence Smith, and Mr. Marcel LeBlanc. Their combined service to the district totals one hundred and eight years. More important than this impressive number of years, however, is the fact that their dedication seems to have grown with each passing year. We would like to extend to them our sincerest thanks for their efforts on behalf of our education. 1953- 54 1954- 55 1955- 56 1956- 57 1957- 58 1958- 59 1959- 60 1960- 61 1961- 62 1962- 63 1963- 64 1964- 65 PREVIOUS DEDICATIONS Marcel LeBlanc Harold LaBarge Miss Dorothy Hickey Miss S. The Junior Varsity's 18-0 record is the first undefeated season completed by a Harrisville Junior Varsity team in many years, perhaps the first ever. Their 87 points scored against Parish- ville in the last game of the season may very well be the highest number of points scored in the history of Harrisville Junior Varsity teams. Their points per game average is no doubt a record also. These four characteristics are the foundation of its strength and purpose. Minimum standards are set by the national office. Local standards have evolved over the years and are still in constant review. The local chapter came into existence in the 1953-54 school year as the direct result of the efforts of Mr. Harold LaBarge, then supervising principal of H.C.S., and a committee of four faculty members. In the spring of 1977, the council presented the school with stereo equipment for the gymnasium. Once again this year it sponsored a pizza sale and a memory tree. It was instrumental in obtaining a juke box for use during the lunch hour and hopes to obtain a pool table soon. It sponsored three movies during the first semester and is planning several additional showings during the second semester. Among its other plans are the purchase of a new school flag and possibly a curtain for the stage. The Class of 1978 held its Junior Prom on Saturday, March 26, 1977, in the gymnasium of the Junior-Senior High. It had chosen as its theme Stairway to Heaven . The following words from Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven set the mood for the evening: There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure. Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. A giant chandelier hung from the center of the lowered ceiling. Flowers, donated by Mr. and Mrs. Wyman Manchester in memory of their daughter, Karen, who would have been a member of the Class of 1978, decorated the tables. The coronation of King Craig Luther and Queen Susan Brown highlighted the evening. The Prom was well-attended. RED MASQUE On Saturday, April 30, 1977, the Red Masque, under the direction of Mr. Amerando, staged two delightful one-act plays: THE SCARECROW and THE PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN. The success of these productions was the result of many hours of pre- paration and practice. Scenes from the first of these two productions can be seen on this page while candids taken during the production of the second play are featured on the next page. The sets were constructed by the High School Play Production Class. Mrs. Breindel was in charge of costumes. Departure from Harrisville for Canton took place at eight o'clock on ten Satur- days, beginning September 17 and ending on December 10. A stop was made en route to pick up students at Knox Memorial. The return trip, again this year, was not without a stop at the sub shop. Six of our students, Barbara LaDuc, Kim Miller, Caroline Stott, Nora Clark, Linda Simmons, and Chris Hoover were registered in the Human Behavior course. Four others, Tom Valentine, Kathy Wicks, Paul Richer, and Kevin Buckingham were students in the Computers course. General Semantics attract- ed three others: Jackie Whitmarsh, Brenda Wood, and Kim Fraser. Sherry Benson enrolled in a course titled Socio-philosophical Analysis of Sport.
