MARGARET SCANLON A child's initial experience in school often establishes behavioral patterns and attitudes which, when positive, result in the normal development of social values and scholastic performance. Fortunate indeed is the child who is met, morning after morning and week after week, by a teacher's smile and who knows that his daily problems and crises will command sympathetic understanding. For nearly twenty years Mrs. Margaret Scanlon has, in her kindergarten room, provided an atmosphere conducive to the maximum self-realization of each child under her care. It is, therefore, with pride and sincere gratitude that the yearbook staff and the members of the Harrisville Teachers' Association dedicate the 1977 Pirates Log to Mrs. Margaret Scanlon. May she continue to find satisfaction and purpose in her chosen profession. BOARD OF EDUCATION Members of the Board of Education serve the school district without pay. They devote many hours in discharging the duties of their office. Their dedication to the education of the children of our district guarantees an operation which runs smoothly and effective- ly. Many serve term after term because they are convinced that the well-being of this community and the country at large depends to a great extent on the values and the knowledge which the younger generation receives while in school. We extend to the Board of Education a sincere thank you for its concern and dedication to the education of the youth of Harris- ville. To appreciate the resourcefulness and courage of our Junior-Senior High kitchen staff we need but to glance at the somewhat less than adequate facility with which they work. A school cook must not only pro- vide sound, nutritional meals to satisfy state regulations but she must also strive to please the palates of several hundred students whose tastes are as di- (• vergent as their family names. In spite of occasional grumbling that it's not mom's cooking , Mrs. Frank in particular, and the . 1_ kitchen staff in general, have maintained through the years a —----- high level of quality in the preparation of meals. Mrs. Frank who has been in the cafeteria since it opened in 1951, has served under Principals Crandall, LaBarge, Boyden, Betrus, and Kelly. On our behalf, and that of her many friends, we extend to her our best wishes for a long and happy retirement. MRS. They were Terry Irish, Jay Seymour, and Kelly Buckingham. Gordon Grigg was named to the Second Team. Unfortunately we were unable to obtain final standings in our division. We were able to determine, however, that St. Regis Falls captured the Division D crown with a 10-2 record. Our Pirates followed in second place with a 9-3 record. Our team scored nine straight victories before bowing to its last three opponents. In the Northern Athletic Conference play-offs, our Pirate baseballers lost their initial contest to Morristown by a 4-0 score. Morristown went on to win the Division D championship but lost the C-D championship to St. Joseph's of Malone, 11-5. Saranac Lake bested Massena 4-0 in the A-B championship game. Heuvelton captured second by posting an 8-2 win-loss record, its only two losses being at the hands of the Morristown aggregation. Lisbon followed in third. Our girls moved from a last place finish in the 1975 campaign to a fourth place finish in the 1976 season. Since the team lost few players via the graduation route, it expects to field a more experienced squad in the spring of 1977 and possibly move up another notch or two in the standings. In the league play-offs the Morristown girls soundly defeated the Edwards girls by an 18-5 score, thus earning the C-D championship honors. In the A-B championship contest the girls from Massena outclassed the representatives from St. Lawrence Central by shutting them out while they themselves scored ten runs. We do not know if an overall championship contest was played. Guidelines outlining the minimal requirements which must be attained and maintained are set by the national headquarters. Local requirements are set by the school's faculty. Mr. Marcel LeBlanc is the faculty adviser of our local chapter. On November 15, 1976, a dinner- induction, sponsored by the Commu- nity-School Association with the cooperation of the Harrisville Teachers' Association, was held in the homemaking suite. Mr. Rod Parow, a member of the teaching staff and a graduate member of the Lake Bonaparte Chapter of the National Honor Society, addressed the gathering. Guests included the president of the CSA, Mrs. Jaqueline Wood, Supervising Princi- pal and Mrs. Kelly, Reverend and Mrs. Howe Perry, and the parents of the inductees. Ray Sibley, presi- dent of the Lake Bonaparte Chapter, was toastmaster. « JUNIORS, SENIORS ATTEND SLU PROGRAM Two members of the Class of 1977 and two members of the Class of 1978 were enrolled in the fall as parti- cipants in St. Lawrence University's Talented Juniors Program. Seniors Ann Wood and Francine Billings and Juniors Paul Richer and Michael Valentine attended a course in human development taught by Profes- sor James Wallace of the SLU staff. Classes were two hours in duration. The pictures on this page show the four standing before Valentine Hall, site of the course. The four are also seen seated in class (center left), and standing before the portraits of John and Grace Valen- tine, distant cousins of Michael and donors of the funds which made the construction of Valentine Hall possible. The photo, bottom left, shows the four wrestling with giant subs, the traditional treat which occupied most of the trip home. Mr. James Cleveland drove the four to Canton every Saturday morning. Students are indeed fortunate to have the opportunity to further their education in this commendable way. JUNIOR PROM 76 KING AND QUEEN The Class of 1977 held its Junior Prom on May 15, 1976. The theme was The Times of Your Life . Music for the evening was by Patchwork . The Junior Prom queen, Kim Baker, and king, Larry Butts, were crowned by the 1975 king and queen, Kelly Buckingham and Shelley Smith. The attendants were Cindy Ritz, Crystal Rogers, Kelly Phelps, Pam Mallette, Mary Pike, Ray Sibley, Tom Arnold, Pierre Dashnaw, Mike Davison, and Dave Lesperance. Faculty hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cring and Mr. and Mrs. Philip Looby. The gym was tastefully decorated. The theme found its inspi- ration from the following lines: The laughter and the tears, The shadows of misty yesteryear. The good times and the bad it seems And all the others in between.
