This twenty-third edition of the Pirai.es Log is the result of many long hours of discussion and work by the members of the staff. The staff once again voted to continue publishing the PIRATES LOG on right hand pages only, a decision that lends some uniqueness to our yearbook since we are the only New York yearbook to do so. Mr. LeBlanc, who has been adviser since the beginning, once again advised. DEDICATION MRS. EXCHANGE STUDENT It was our pleasure to have had with us from late September to late December Hugo Jara, son of Senor and Senora Luis Jara of Mexico City. Hugo was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hoover and family. Hugo adapted to the slowler pace of a small community very well. One of the highlights of his stay was a trip to the Laurentians with the Hoovers. We wish Hugo much success and happiness. Randy Ray Auto Mechanics Mixed Chorus 12; Mixed Chorus Play 12; Soccer 12. SW JTaJLeL REGENTS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS John Hooper captured one of the forty-one Regents scholarships awarded to Lewis County Seniors. Carrie Gale, although scoring higher in the competitive exam, failed to win one since her county of residence is St. Lawrence County where the scores were higher than in Lewis. She was named fourth alternate, however, and has an excellent chance of receiving this award. Catherine Ford, a 12th alternate in Lewis Coun- ty, was named a winner of a Basic Nursing scholarship. Congratulations! Catherine Ford SENIOR SUPERLATIVES Members of the Pirates Log and of the Senior Class voted those pictured below the superlatives indica- ted. Our last contest was finally canceled after rain forced two postponements. Russell Bowen and Marty Buckingham both hit solo homeruns during the season. Pitching duties were shared by Terry Irish, Kelly and Marty Buckingham. Although the girls on the softball team failed to register a victory during the course of the campaign, they, nevertheless, made their opponents aware of the fact that the team has greatly improved over the last two or three years. Whereas the girls had allowed in excess of thirty runs during a single contest in previous years, they did not allow a single team to reach that plateau this year. They themselves scored in double figures in six .of their eight contests. In seven of the eight games, the scores were respectable and often close. The girls played four away games. These were played at Saint Regis Falls, Parishville, Edwards, and Hammond. They also hosted four games: Hermon-DeKalb, Lisbon, Colton-Pierrepont, and Morristown. Home runs were hit by Peggy Bancroft, Debbie Lesperance, Shelley Smith, and Patty Chartrand. We have a feeling that the girls will have improved sufficiently by next season to capture a victory or two. We wish them the best of luck. The girls suited a team which was almost without experience this year. As a matter of fact, all but three of the girls were ninth grade students. Although they did not expect to win many games, if any, they, nevertheless, practiced hard and played hard. The season started on January 30, at home, against a good Parishville aggregation and concluded in March. In addition to Parishville, the girls played Edwards, St. Regis Falls, and Colton. The league had five teams scheduled for home-and-home games. Miss Felio coached the team. She has great hope for the future if the girls con- tinue to practice and improve. The pictures on this page prove that the girls play just as serious- ly as the boys. Seen in the action shots on this page are Joanne Wood (4), Peggy Dooley (5), Denise LaParr (12) , Chris Hoover (15), Brenda Wood (33). On the previous page Patty Chartrand (10) can be seen in action. The play, entitled Life O'the Party, was extremely well done. Outstanding was the performance of Patrick Hooley. KELLY DUNDON HEADS STUDENT COUNCIL Kelly Dundon was elected presi- dent of the 1975-76 Student Council. Other officers were as follows: Ann Wood, vice-president; Kim Dowling, secretary; and Kelly Phelps, treas- urer. Faculty advisers were Mrs. Shirley Dusharm and Mr. Rod Parow. The council sponsored a very successful exchange student weekend. It also sponsored the annual Christmas festivities which mark the last day of school before the Christmas recess. A Memory Tree was set up on the front lawn of the school as a remembrance of deceased friends and relatives. REPRESENTATIVES: (from left) front: Kathy Wicks, ninth; Debbie Lesperance, tenth; Nancy Mealus, twelfth; Crystal Rogers, eleventh; Lisa Miller, eighth; Janine Bas- sette, seventh; back: Andrew Perry, seventh; Pat Hooley, eighth; Tom Arnold, ele- venth; George Clark, twelfth; Matt LaParr, ninth, Richard Malbeuf, tenth. Student hosts, with whose family our guests stayed, are pictured Five area exchange students were weekend hphinrl thpir onpct guests of the Student Council and Harrisville Central. They attended a pep rally prior to a bus trip to an exciting basketball game at Hermon-DeKalb. Following the game, a pizza party was held at Kilbourn's. Bowling and a luncheon on Saturday capped the weekend. Guests were treated to pizza after the game. Olga displays concern on bowling lane. Following two instructional periods, the rest of the day which marked the closing of the school for Christmas vacation was given over to various activities. The Junior Red Masque presented an amusing comedy, Bad, Worse, and Broccoli . Five of its actors are pictured on this page: Kevin Burgess, Andy Perry, Tim Dashnaw, Janine Bassette, and Karen Hoover. Also pictured are Joe Sibley and Bruce Parow at the ping- pong table and Mr. Strough and his musical group. One of the highlights of the day was the slave auction , although some of the slaves might have had grounds for complaint concerning the duties imposed upon them. In the photo, upper left, seventh and eighth graders pool their re- sources to make a purchase. The photo, center left, shows a member of this corporation bidding. The successful bidders are seen leading their prize away after forcing the unfortunate victims to wear such things as dunce caps. Another victim was forced to play ping-pong with the paddle in his mouth. The photo, lower left, features a few card sharks in a game of liar . SIX ATTEND SLU PROGRAM (from left) front: Kelly Phelps Pam Mallette back: Ann Wood Kathy Griffith Pierre Dashnaw Kim Dowling Six members of the Class of 1977 attended Saturday classes at Saint Lawrence University as part of the Talented Juniors Program. GIRLS’ CHORUS MIXED CHORUS “BOYS AND GIRLS TOGETHER” The annual mixed chorus play was presented to the public on Friday, November 14 at the elementary school. A good crowd was in attend- ance in spite of the winter's first storm and treacherous roads. As is generally the case, the spotlight always shines brightest on the cast itself. However, dozens of persons working behind the scenes were in great part responsible for the success of this production. Some of the main characters are featured on this and the following page. Top left: Kelly Buckingham (Rodney Sharp), Gene Devereaux (his father) and Nancy LaDuc (his mother) discuss family matters; center: Shelley Smith (Ida) Kathy Griffith (Daisy), and Gotham High students Mary Pike and Kelly Phelps; bottom: Terry Irish (Jimmy), Shelley Smith (his girl).
