YEARBOOK STAFF Since the beginning of recorded time, each day has been marked with an advancement in some field. Although the advancement might have seemed trivial and minor, it was, nevertheless, one step closer to the modern, affluent society of this decade. Man has grown, almost beyond comprehension, in his mental capabilities in reasoning and gaining knowledge. Learning has become a mechanical act performed by all schol- ars. The one major factor responsible for this is education. Education is the process of systematically training and teaching the minds of individuals. For every achievement- from the discovery of fire to the invention of the most complex spacecraft- education has been involved. The accumulation of knowledge through the milleniums has contributed to the present-day society which is unsurpassed by any other known civili- zation. If knowledge has produced the innumerable conveniences which we enjoy today, then let education continue its course. Susan Rose, co-editor-in-chief It is very difficult to fashion the specific expressions a student wishes to use in telling a teacher he appreciates and is thankful for that teacher's education and guidance. Throughout our school years, the members of this far-reaching profession have continued to lend their assistance and guidance in school work as well as other areas of our lives. Many consider teachers just another part of the school and getting an education. This is not true today as many of our teachers are also civic and religious leaders in our community. This again helps to further even more the welfare and opportunities for young people. As seniors, we feel we should express our gratitude to these educators who have helped us accomplish our utmost goal: preparation for future life. It is only fitting that we offer our thanks to them in this school publication. Since beauty is in simplicity: thank you. Linda Phelps, co-editor-in-chief Seated, left to right: Norris Grigg, Business Manager, Susan Rose and Linda Phelps, co-editors, Ben Hunter, Sports. Standing: Oheryl Scott, Elementary, Lucille Collier, Marie Chartrand, Senior Class, David Rose, Activities, Jim Connors, Photography, Bill Soukey, Art, Sharon Mantle, Marie McCarthy, Underclassmen, Ellen Dundon, Literary, Karen Ripley, Assistant'Editor, Grace Pierce. Absent: Bill Mealus, Sports, Bill Ingra- ham. Art_________________________________________________________________ DEDICATION Mr. and Mrs. Clifford The PIRATES LOG staff proudly dedicates this, the thirteenth edition, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clifford. Both have at all times displayed an active interest in school activities and have always shown themselves willing to co-operate with student functions. Because of their interest, patience, help and dedication to all phases of the teaching profession, we feel that Mr. and Mrs. Clifford are more than deserving of this honor. Mrs. Rita Clifford holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Maine, where she majored in social studies. Mr. Clifford also has a Bachelor of Science degree from the same university, having majored in biology. Prior to their arrival in Harrisville in 1962, Mr. And Mrs. Clifford made their home in Maine, where Mr. Clifford taught at East Corinth Academy. Both are active in sports and enjoy such hobbies as hunting and fishing. Education in the last decade has been under intensive scrutiny and upheaval. Never before in the history of this country have so many social, economic and political forces affected a school. The population explosion, Sputnik, the expansion of knowledge and technol- ogy, the war on poverty and the battles of Viet Nam have exerted an impact upon all school systems. The federal government is for the first time pouring millions of dollars into local schools and the state, with matching funds, is reorganizing most local districts into large administrative units. It is difficult to predict the final trend but our immediate local changes include a broader curricu- lum, vocational and technical education for the students who are not college-bound with an intensive summer program in remedial reading, modern math and Head-Start for educationally underprivileged children. It has been a privilege to work with the outstanding 1966 senior class. The top six senior girls' averages are in the nineties and about sixty percent of the class are going on to higher education. I want to offer my congratula- tions to the yearbook staff and their advisor for their excellent publication. yi- ■Supervising Principal Oarl Frederick Arthur Dooley Robert Hooper T. It endeavors to achieve these goals by upholding high standards of leadership, character, and service to both the school and the community. The Lake Bonaparte Chapter, seeking to translate into action its ideal of service, has, this year, initiated a project aimed at alleviating the reading needs of students in the small East African community of Kondoa, where Mr. Evan Beauchamp, a former member of our school faculty and now a Peace Corps Volunteer, is currently assigned as seventh grade teacher. The chapter hopes to be able to forward to the students of this underprivileged school a meaningful number of books and various other library supplies. NATIONAL EDUCATION NIGHT November 8 was a very interesting and informative night at the Harrisville Elementary School. It was National Education Night. Mrs. Dusharm, head of our business department, acted as hostess to the students, parents, and teachers gathered there. The Piratones played several numbers and were followed by the Triple Trio's renditions of In the Still of the Night .and Syncopated Clock . Michael Lancor spoke on his experiences at Boy's State. American Legion Junior Auxiliary offi- cers, Karen Ripley, Janice Van Wyck, and Marie McCarthy, spoke on various aspects of democracy. The students' speeches were followed by a film entitled Teacher in the White House , a speech by President Johnson on education. Mr. Betrus then said a few words on the importance of education and welcomed our new teachers. MIXED CHORUS PLAY The mixed chorus, under the direction of Mrs. St. Lawrence, provided entertainment for a packed hall on November 10. The group presented The Singing Freshman , a light-hearted comedy about a princess (Eileen Rice) and a poor farm boy (Jim Connors). The play was brimming with good singing and humor. The proceeds, amounting to one hundred five dollars, were placed in the treasury of the vocal music department to be used for any necessary equipment. Following the production, the cast enjoyed a spaghetti dinner at the Sahara Restaurant. DRAMA CLUB This year the Drama Club presented two plays: Scary Hollow , produced by the Sophomore class, and Itchin' to Get Hitched , a Junior class undertaking. The cast of the former included: Pat Lancor, John Hooper, Gail Scanlon, Edward Baker, Elmer Slate, Billie Smith, Kay Marie Farney, Frank DeHart, and Kathy Weekes. The cast of the Junior cast included: Marie McCarthy, Bob LaDuc, Linda Smith, Jon Betrus, Phil Hathway, Linda Burke, Cheryl Scott, and Jeff Hirschey. This December 22 performance proved to be profitable. The profits were divided equally among the Junior and Sophomore classes and the Drama Club. Miss Terreson is faculty advisor. HALLOWEEN PARTY Saturday, October 30, the Alumni Association played host to numerous ghosts and goblins at the annual Halloween Party. Six prizes were awarded by the judges, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Seeley and Mrs. Lorraine Manchester. The list of winners was headed by Gary Dickinson as a KKK member who dragged his poor slave girl (Ebby Miller) along on a rope. Games were conducted by some of the older goblins while unsuspecting souls crawled wetly through the Hall of Horrors. Mr. Betrus donned an apron to serve cider and doughnuts.
