H O D0 if pen ors is a new program in the Harrisonville school system. It gives foreign exchange students a chance to visit for three months. This year the Spanish Club sponsored Alvaro Fierro, age 17, an exchange student from Santiago, Chile. Alvaro, better known as Al, stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Loffell. Al took the following classes. Art Fundamentals, Sociology, Arts and Crafts, Drafting, Spanish III and Creative Writing. I enjoyed art very much, but drafting was my favorite class, said Al, who hopes to become an architect. I Xhen Al returns to Chile, he will have two years of high school e . I really liked coming to America, it was a good experience- Harrisonville people are really friendly. Ms. Trimble in many ways was very nice, and a big help, said Al. 1. Alvaro Fierro, foreign exchange student, from Santiago, Chile took several art classes and drew this picutre in art fundamentals. 2. Joaquin Garcia, from Talcoa, Chile and Al play pool at the going away party for Joaquin. 3. Spanish Club members are: Row 1, C. Amen, J. Polluck, Ms. Pam Trimble, T. Horn, C. Venable, L. Gile, S. Margrfef Hooper, AFS student from South Africa, stayed with Mr. and Mrs. John Foster. Marg.ret attended Harrisonville High School during the entire 1977-78 school year. 5. Al helps Lindy Rudell with Spanish.

Foreign Languages Speak Out r pa ' 1 College, Science Fiction and Fan- French and Spanish classes remained busy this year. Ms. Hajney took several students skating at Iceland South. They also travelled to Seville Square to eat at the French restaurant, Magic Pan. French contest was held at Pittsburg, Kansas, and four first places were earned. Spanish students made pinatas, attended El Chicos, went to World's of Fun, sponsored a foreign exchange student and had several other parties and other trips. They had going away parties for Alvara Fierro and Joaquin Garcia. Ms. Trimble, Spanish teacher said, There are few things in life thatlgive, you pleasure to see. For me it's colorful sunsets, giving Christmas presents, and all the kids at Harrisonville High School. I've never learned so much in my life. I'd just like to say thanks to each and everyone of you for all the good times. You're all very special to me. 1. Ms. Pam Trimble helps students as they work on the Spanish newspaper. 2. Strange smells lingering in the halls, all sorts of creatures being brought to school, learning and doing all sorts of neat things. These were a few of the things involving the science department. Several activities this year were a trip to Kansas City to attend the Science Fair which was held April 12-15, and also a science field trip. The students in chemistry and physics this year seem quite interested in the programs and are usually willing to work hard to understand the material, stated Mr. Gettings. i .
