Zhe 1954 Har riso Hia n Presented By The Senior Class of One Harrison High School DEDICATION She pass’d away like morning dew, Before the sun was high; So brief her time, she scarcely knew The meaning of a sigh. As round the rose its soft perfume, Sweet love around her floated; Admired she grew — while mortal doom Crept on, unfear’d unnoted. Love was her guardian Angel here, But Love to Death resign’d her. Tho’ Love was kind, why should we fear But holy Death is kinder. H. In these schools one teacher taught all eight grades. She had beginners, who had to be taught how to hold a pencil to write, then she had each step up to seventh and eighth grades where she had to teach domestic science and agriculture. If she planned well and doubled some of her classes she could get by with thirty-two classes a day! The State Board of Health condemned all these buildings except Bethel. We used to read the signs posted on the door which read: “Any person allowing school to be held in the building would be subject to fine.” However, because of the war the trustee was allowed to re- open all the buildings except Buncum and Maple Grove, the next year, providing a sinking fund was levied for repairs or new building. Jonas Shoemaker came forth with the idea that we would need to build two build- ings because of the roads. He was sure that we could not transport them home before in the night. John McCreery, Harry McCreery’s father, was much concerned about the building of roads. He insisted that if good roads were established all over the township one centrally lo- cated building would suffice. Each farmer had the privilege of hauling out what was called his land tax. He dumped the gravel he hauled in front of his own buildings. Consequently when you traveled these roads you went along nicely in front of the building and got “hung up” between farms. Mr. McCreery got others in the township interested and roads were built one mile north of Gaston; two miles west, then south to Bethel. After roads began to make transportation a pleasure instead of a dread, plans began to move toward the building of a new school. The levy for a sinking fund had been withdrawn and the accumulated funds exhausted during these years, leaving no funds to apply to a new building. By law the township could be bonded for only $8300. It was then advertised for the sale of $83,000 in bonds and a date set to receive bids; it was also advertised for bids on the specification for the building. The lowest bid was $85,000 — $2,000 more than the bonds called for. The ground was purchased and the build- ing erected. INDIANA HELLO CLASS HISTORY In 1942 the school buses rolled in and children were getting off and it was noticed that here and there were a few shy groups of boys and girls. These small children were shown to the first grade room by the older students where they met a lovely lady who they came to know as Miss Mace, or as she was often called. Teacher. We grew to like her very much, but she pushed us out the door and into the room of Mrs. McDaniels. This year we were not so shy and we began our journey of being eager beavers, but it wasn’t for work as all the teachers soon found out. She grew tired of us and with the prospect of a new group of eager students, pushed us into the room of Mrs. Gwaltney, who soon found out that we could work if we had too. Our most favorite subject was still recess. She found that it was time for a change, and shoved us on to Mrs. Oliver, who wasn t sure that she was ready for us. She was kind and understanding when we didn’t catch on at first, but we soon learned the three R’s. Full of pep and enthusiasm we zoomed into Mrs. Smith’s room. She was happy to see us and we were happy to be there. Mekle Hargis joined us this year. Mrs. Smith was probably happy to get rid of us and we moved on to our first man teacher, Mr. Lewis. We found that the sledding was a little rougher and tougher here, but all in all it wasn’t too bad. He threw us a curve that landed us in the assembly, where we felt pretty small, but the older students made us feel at home. We elected Mr. McCreery as our class sponsor. We welcomed to our class, Patty Humphries, Omer Ault, Wanda Alley. Bob Brown, Shirley Decker. Pat Lowe, Wanda West, Oneal West, Rozella Thompson, and Kent Moore. In a short while we moved over a couple of rows and found that we were in the eighth grade. Some of our assembly shyness has worn off and we felt like big shots. We found out all too soon that trouble came our way without Seventy two much persuasion. We were sorry to lose Howard Sellers and Wanda Ritchie. Mr. Cline was elected our sponsor, and we decided to hold him over for our freshman year. We were certainly green freshmen. We were glad to have Helen Penrod. Sara Mills. Peggy Mc- Gunegill join us. but we noticed that a few were missing when we took inventory. We found that Judy Stephenson. Omer Ault. Oneal West, and Kent Moore were missing. We cast aside our freshmen books, moved over a couple of rows, and found that the far wall wasn’t so far after all. In the process of moving we lost Betty Bader. Peggy McGunegill, Rozella Thompson. Wanda West, Pat Lowe. Shirley Decker, and Farrell Doughty, but gained Howard Sellers, and Eldon Johnson. Mr. Craig, as our class sponsor helped us order our class rings, and a few were lucky enough to keep them. As the school busses rolled back into their usual places in the fall of 1952 we found that Karl Reed. Bill Sites, and Marshall Hatton were not with us any longer, and during the year we lost Carl Long, Wayne Rinker, Joan Davis. Roberta Sites, and Charles Cox. Omer Ault joined us again, along with Janice Hiser and Barbara Pitser. We really had a lot of fun working with Mrs. Carter and we thought that it was best to have her for a sponsor in our Senior year. We arrived finally; at last we are Seniors. The twenty-two who are graduating this year hate to say good-bye to the teachers whom we have given a hard time, to the fellow stu- dents and to Mrs. Carter, with whom we have had so much fun working with the past two years. We are sorry that Sara Mills. Barbara Pitser. Pat Skinner and Joe Brown are not graduating with us this year. At last we have come to the end of the line and there is not much to say except good-bye. GOOD-BYE §eventy-six 7 0 u
