SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We started in the first grade in September of 1937 with twenty-six mem- bers. Seven of these members are still with us, they are: Donald Kelly, Dick Fedor, Paul Smith, Barbara Sites, Dolly Antrim, Susan Benadum, and Wanda Finley. We had a new member to enroll at Christmas who is still with us. His name is Gene Foust. Miss Main (now Mrs. Yount) started us happily on our school life. Our principal at that time was Mr. G. R. Osborn. The following fall Mrs. McDaniel took us off of Miss Main’s hands. We entered the third grade discovering that Mrs. Gwaltney was in the hospital recovering from a broken neck; however, we managed to get along with a substitute teacher, Mrs. Gossett. We had a new member in our class that year, Mary Brown. Mrs. Gwaltney came the second semester to take her place as our teacher. Mrs. Gwaltney passed us on the next year to Miss McCreery (now Mrs. Carnes) as our fourth grade teacher. Mrs. Smith was our fifth grade teacher and since we were anxious to have our first man teacher she passed us on to the sixth grade where we had Mr. McCreery. Jack Walls came while we were in the fifth grade. Some members of the class found out that Mr. McCreery could swing a paddle harder than the women teachers, but we still liked him. At last we were in the assembly, but it wasn’t as funny as we thought it was going to be. We had too many teachers watching us. We had a new classmate that fall, James Coppock. Our first class sponsor was Mr. White. Mr. Darrell Miller was our new principal that fall. We entered the eighth grade with a new sponsor, Mrs. Mabel Thornburg, and a new classmate, Ermel McCord. We entered the ninth grade proudly taking the name Freshman for now we were in high school. This year we had a new coach and principal, Mr. Reasoner. We were especially proud that year because that was the first time our hoys were able to play on the high school basketball team. Harrison won the first game it played that year. It was the first game Harrison had won for four years and the only one that the team won that year. The Sophomore year was about the same only with more excitement because we won more basketball games, and we got our class sweaters. We started our Junior year with a new sponsor, Mr. Galbraith and two new classmates. Cuba Hessler and Barbara Kelso. We gave our Junior play, “It’s a Long Lane.” We felt very sophisticated with our new class jewelry. We were busy at all of the basketball games with the consessions. In the spring we did ourselves proud with our Junior-Senior reception. The Seniors of ’48 had kindly given their time and the proceeds of the October carnival so that we might finance this party. We held this at the Y.W.C.A. Our entertainment was Monty Keesling’s Orchestra. Now, we have started this vear as seniors with $360 in our treasury and a new sponsor, Mrs. Townsend, also a promise of a trip to Washington, D. C. in the spring. To start the ball rolling Mrs. Townsend and the new principal, Mr. Penrod, who is our co-sponsor had a party for the seniors and their parents. At this party the plans were made by the parents to help finance our trip. In September we chose our invitations and name cards and held a school skating party. October was a busy month. We found that we were to sponsor the Harrisonian. With the aid of the Juniors we sponsored a successful carnival. Our parents sponsored a box supper for us. We spent a day in Muncie having our Senior pictures made and going to the show. In November we helped take individual pictures of all grades. The boys worked a week on getting ads for the annual, while the girls stayed at school and worked on the annual. Mr. Sartor came from Indianapolis to make arrangements for our caps and gowns. We had our first semester party at Mrs. Townsend’s, it was in form of a dinner. A good time was had by all. Plans were made for a spring program which again would be snonsored by our parents. Our Senior play was “Who’s Batty Now?” We mustn’t leave out the athletics in our class, Don Kelly, Jack Walls, and Gene Foust are on the basketball team and they like our new coach, Mr. Marcus, very much. We have two new classmates this year, Fredous Jefferson and Jack Wise- man. So we’ve reached our last days in Harrison High School! WANDA FINLEY
