The Class of 1949 Presents 3£arrisonian Harrison Township High School The whole world is living in an air conscious era.” Our class realiz- ing this felt that we would like to soar to the heights with this, our final work, as a group. It has been with a great deal of work and planning under the guid- ance of Mrs. Townsend and Mr. Pen- rod that we, The Senior Class, re- spectfully submit this volume to you for your pleasure. Seven of these members are still with us, they are: Donald Kelly, Dick Fedor, Paul Smith, Barbara Sites, Dolly Antrim, Susan Benadum, and Wanda Finley. We had a new member to enroll at Christmas who is still with us. His name is Gene Foust. Miss Main (now Mrs. Yount) started us happily on our school life. Our principal at that time was Mr. G. R. Osborn. The following fall Mrs. McDaniel took us off of Miss Main’s hands. We entered the third grade discovering that Mrs. Gwaltney was in the hospital recovering from a broken neck; however, we managed to get along with a substitute teacher, Mrs. Gossett. We had a new member in our class that year, Mary Brown. Mrs. Gwaltney came the second semester to take her place as our teacher. Mrs. Gwaltney passed us on the next year to Miss McCreery (now Mrs. Carnes) as our fourth grade teacher. Mrs. Smith was our fifth grade teacher and since we were anxious to have our first man teacher she passed us on to the sixth grade where we had Mr. McCreery. Jack Walls came while we were in the fifth grade. Some members of the class found out that Mr. McCreery could swing a paddle harder than the women teachers, but we still liked him. At last we were in the assembly, but it wasn’t as funny as we thought it was going to be. We had too many teachers watching us. We had a new classmate that fall, James Coppock. Our first class sponsor was Mr. White. Mr. Darrell Miller was our new principal that fall. We entered the eighth grade with a new sponsor, Mrs. Mabel Thornburg, and a new classmate, Ermel McCord. We entered the ninth grade proudly taking the name Freshman for now we were in high school. This year we had a new coach and principal, Mr. Reasoner. We were especially proud that year because that was the first time our hoys were able to play on the high school basketball team. Harrison won the first game it played that year. It was the first game Harrison had won for four years and the only one that the team won that year. The Sophomore year was about the same only with more excitement because we won more basketball games, and we got our class sweaters. We started our Junior year with a new sponsor, Mr. Galbraith and two new classmates. Cuba Hessler and Barbara Kelso. We gave our Junior play, “It’s a Long Lane.” We felt very sophisticated with our new class jewelry. We were busy at all of the basketball games with the consessions. In the spring we did ourselves proud with our Junior-Senior reception. The Seniors of ’48 had kindly given their time and the proceeds of the October carnival so that we might finance this party. We held this at the Y.W.C.A. Our entertainment was Monty Keesling’s Orchestra. Now, we have started this vear as seniors with $360 in our treasury and a new sponsor, Mrs. Townsend, also a promise of a trip to Washington, D. C. in the spring. To start the ball rolling Mrs. Townsend and the new principal, Mr. Penrod, who is our co-sponsor had a party for the seniors and their parents. At this party the plans were made by the parents to help finance our trip. In September we chose our invitations and name cards and held a school skating party. October was a busy month. We found that we were to sponsor the Harrisonian. With the aid of the Juniors we sponsored a successful carnival. Our parents sponsored a box supper for us. We spent a day in Muncie having our Senior pictures made and going to the show. In November we helped take individual pictures of all grades. The boys worked a week on getting ads for the annual, while the girls stayed at school and worked on the annual. Mr. Sartor came from Indianapolis to make arrangements for our caps and gowns. We had our first semester party at Mrs. Townsend’s, it was in form of a dinner. A good time was had by all. Plans were made for a spring program which again would be snonsored by our parents. Our Senior play was “Who’s Batty Now?” We mustn’t leave out the athletics in our class, Don Kelly, Jack Walls, and Gene Foust are on the basketball team and they like our new coach, Mr. Marcus, very much. We have two new classmates this year, Fredous Jefferson and Jack Wise- man. So we’ve reached our last days in Harrison High School! As I was walking along a little bird was singing and seemed to say “follow me. Suddenly it was very cold and I looked around I found I was in Canada. I heard someone calling, “Peanuts for sale. I wondered who would be selling peanuts in the cold and as I glanced around I found it was my old classmate, Don Kelly. We then ventured on and I noticed it was getting warmer. We were back in the U. S. and were walking down a small street when we noticed a cute little house with many small children running about. As we were about to pass the mother came out to call to her children and I found it was Wanda Finley. We stopped and chatted for a while and then ventured on. We were then in New York City. I thought we might as well spend a little time here and enjoy ourselves and the sights of the large city. We decided on Radio City. As we entered there was a featured crooner on and who could it be but another classmate. Jack Walls. As we were about to leave a woman came in to clean the floors and who do you suppose it was, it was another classmate, Bobbie Kelso. We then hurried on. Next we found ourselves in Washington, D. C. We decided to visit the Congress while we were there. As we entered we noticed they were in session and the President was speaking. Beside him was a man who was his secretary and wrote his speeches. He was James Coppock. Suddenly we found ourselves in the middle of nowhere. I looked around and as we were about to leave I noticed a small pond with a man sitting on the shore. We went over to him and I was surprised to find Dick Fedor there trying to teach some small ducks to swim. We next found ourselves in a small town. As we were walking down the street we happened to pass another classmate, Barbara Sites. We talked for a while and I found out she was happily married to a garbage collector. We then found ourselves in a court room and there behind the Judge’s desk was our classmate, Cuba Hessler. But, wait, who is that on trial, it is another classmate. Gene Foust, for putting paper wads in the water fountain at the street fair. I noticed we were getting farther south suddenly we noticed a sign. It said “Come to the Conta Marla for lots of fun. We decided we might as well see what it was while we were so near. As we entered we noticed the manager greeting guests. As.we came up to him we recognized Paul Smith. As we were about to leave I noticed there was to be a basketball game that night with an all girl team. The coach was our old friend, Fredous Jefferson. We were on our way again. As we were wandering about we noticed we were on a large plantation and it seemed to smell of garlic. We asked where we were and we found we were on a garlic plantation owned by Ermel McCord. Suddenly it was very hot. I asked where we were and found we were in the middle of Africa. I heard boogie woogie music when I noticed a white girl trying to teach the natives to dance. I found it was my old friend Susan Benadum. We had a short chat and then hurried on. Next we found ourselves in London. I noticed there was a carnival in town. As we wandered about I heard an announcer calling “come see the woman on the trapeze and the lion trainer. As I came closer I noticed the announcer was Jack Wiseman. I bought a ticket and went inside. When the performance started I found the trapeze performer was Dolly Antrim and the lion tamer was—I suddenly awakened from my day dream and heard my mother telling me to hurry to the grocery.
