It is our desire that future Harrisonites may have fi odern school building ln which 5 they may add stronqlinks to t clnii'St lm ledqe. 1 c ' , s era W PR1Nc1PAL's MESSAGE The rehabilitation of Harrison Technical High School which is scheduled FOREWORD and DEDICATION NM 4 to begin this year will mark a milestone in the history of this great institution. The school was formally opened in September. 1909 with Mr. Frank L. Morse as principal and a faculty of nine teachers in the Farragut High School. The school occupied the present building in May, 1914. At the time of its OCCUDGTICY, Harrison Technical High School was considered one of the finest in the country, costing the taxpayers approximately Sl,500,000. The annex Was added about 1921. The building was quickly filled and during the greater part of its history experienced considerable overcrowding, leading to agitation for additions and extentions to take care of the increased enrollment. Mrs. Hunter first taught at Harrison in September, 1922. She eagerly served on many committees and was active in social service Work in the community. The Mary Hunter Memorial Library is a tribute to this fine teacher. Before Miss Marie L. Gannon's untimely death, October 31, 1951, she helped her students to become successful in the business world. Miss Gannon will long be remembered by the faculty and students. RETIRING FACULTY A Q. 5, , mf jr' fiif 5 U s MR. lOl-IN H. MCCLELLAN MRS. FLORENCE SKIDMORE MR. WOODRUFF ALMLOF MR. WALTER M. RENNIE Mr. McClellan has taught physics ever since he was assigned to Harrison in 1915. His thirty-seven-and-a-half years at Harrison have been happy ones. Mr. McClellan will enter the business world upon his retirement. Mrs. Skidmore was assigned here as a Latin teacher in 1914. During her teaching career, she has been active in school affairs until her retirement in February, 1952. Students will recall her as a wonderful teacher and person. Mr. Almlof started teaching in 1912, and was assigned to Harrison in l9l3. He has seen Harrison under all conditions, and We are grateful for his many contributions. He plans to retire to a farm in upper Michigan. Mr. Rennie, after having taught in the Chicago schools since Ianuary, 1922, came to Harrison in 1947. Many students have learned the fundamental con- cepts of building radios in Mr. Rennie's classes. We are proud to have one of our division classmates elected president of the Student Council. Qther members of our division have actively participated in the Girls' Chorus, Treble Choir, A Cappella Choir, orchestra, intramural sports, Herald and Harrisonian staffs, hall guards, student and office helpers. C. gg 77 The instructor personnel this year consists of Captain Williani I. Ludwig assisted by Master Sergeant Nelson L. Burton and Sergeant lohn E. Rooney. The Cadet Battalion, consistently rated as an Honor Unit at the Anunal Federal lnspection, was commanded by Cadet Lt. Col. I-lotrichter during the tall semester and Cadet Lt. Col. Kother dur- ing the spring semester. Major Swails and Sergeant Rea are now serving in Korea after having contributed much to the unit. They are missed by all who knew them and worked with thern. Qur three Ritle Teams are coached by Ser- geant Rooney who has just recently returned from combat in Korea. The teams have shown remarkable inipravement due to the energy and enthusiasm ot the Sergeant. The many extra hours of practice by the team members is be- ginning to show in time consistently better scores. Many important niatches have been won and a district winning team is looked for next year. During the past year the cadet otticers have been reauired to serve in statt positions and actually perform in that capacity. Cadet officers have also been given additional opportunity to act as instructors. lt is expected that such duty assignments will promote a broader understand- ing ot the responsibilities ot the otticer corps. CONCERT BAND The lOO-piece Concert Band has a long and impressive record of service to the school and com- munity. lt has participated in all 27 City Band Competitions, and received 24 S and E ratings and 3 G ratings during that time. This past year the Band played for the Manley Vocational School Nurses' Graduation October 25, l95l. lt gave an outdoor concert for the Marshall Square Boys' Club Halloween Night at Pilsen Park, played for Harrison graduation exercises, performed at football games, numerous assemblies, participated in competitions, parades, R.O.T.C. federal inspection and held semi- annual concerts and dances. Her patient and careful guidance of the lunior and Senior girls has provided valuable experience which will aid them in their future responsibilities of marriage and motherhood. The students were also fortunate in having Miss Twitchell, RN. give instructions on Maternal and Child Care. The girls, as matured young ladies, learned the essential duties of baby care. With the assistance of our division teacher, Miss O'Day, we managed to adjust ourselves to the high school routine. At last we are Sophomores! Since we came to Harrison to enter a new phase of education, we have striven hard to achieve a high scholastic rating, and to maintain the tradition and spirit of Harrison to the best of our abilities. At this writing, we are just finish- ing our first semester at Harrison and we already have set our sights toward the hall of fame. Here are a few of our accomplishments: our PTA membership is the highest at Harrison: our Bow Day contributions to the Social Laboratory exceeded those of all the other divisions in the school: our donation for Wounded Foot- ball Players ranked second only to a 4A divisiony we contributed lOU'f? to the Welfare Fund, and our subscription for the Herald is 10072. Gur girls' volley ball team is almost champion of freshies. We have six candidates for the Honor Society and eight pupils have not been absent nor tardy. By failing to convert the extra point, the Hornets took a 7 to 6 setback from Lane Tech in a serni-final garne at Soldiers' Field. Under the fine coachinq of Mr. Dougherty, and led on the field by co-captains Chuck Gorra and Richard Rylewicz, the Hornets finished with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses. Our outstanding runner was Captain William Glomb, who was ably assisted by the members of the team. 0 0 0 TRACK TEAM Our indoor and outdoor track teams had a very nice season. In the track events, the Senior boys did exceedingly well. Our luniors led by Captain lack Kososki also had a good season. Both boys have placed first in many meets. lack Moskiewicz has wqn both city and state championships in free style events, and is, without doubt, the best swimmer Harrison has ever had.
