To in- crease the reading etticiency ot our students, a problem prevalent in every corner of the world, the administration ot the Chicago public schools has in- itiated a developmental reading program. lt provides for deiinite instruction in the skills ot reading and growth in reading interests at all levels and in all subjects. ..11..

ATTENDANCE OFFICE On file for each student is a four year cumulative record of absence, tardiness, early dismissals, class cuts, and interviews with the parents. ELMER HAWKINS DISCIPLINE COUNSELOR AND OFFICE AID The Discipline Counselor and Office Aid handles discipline problems referred to him by faculty members, assigns substitutes to class rooms when teachers are absent, assigns lockers to divisions, issues visitors passes, registers incoming studen's ex- cept lB's, and assigns them to divisions and classes. -4 to The present Attendance Office was established after an in- vestigation of the methods used elsewhere for keeping boys and girls in high school.
