Public schools throughout the nation are now being affected by decreasing enrollments, financial pressures, and an uncertainty about the purposes and effectiveness of educational programs. During the last few years the dynamics of increasing enrollments and growth resulted in new facilities, the hiring of new programs, etc. This is no longer the case, and in fact, the opposite is now taking place. We must all try to understand these changes and plan together to provide quality educational programs for all young people. This will require the continued leadership and support of students, staff, parents and citizens of our community even more than in the past. I believe we can meet this challenge. These basic skills will aid students in their future lives. Accounting classes have new books that include modern terminology and new methods. Shorthand is now being offered in a pilot program from Century 21. This system increases the speed and accuracy of dictation. Kathleen Horsh, a student teacher from Central Michigan, joined the department for the first semester. She worked with Mrs. Jamo, teaching Accounting, Typing Ill, and the Tops Ii class. Dorothy Friedl, the Emporiumis coordinating supervisor, opened the store ahead of schedule this year. The staff trains Marketing i students and gives them the experience in retail operations to secure a future job. . The business department seeks to prepare each business student for successful employment through career investigation, testing and staff guidance. 33 english Classes offer variety This year's English Department has made many improvements. A new class was developed to help prepare students for college reading. It is a five week mini course taught by Mary Brown emphasizing vocabulary and college testing. No credit or grade is given for the course; however, many students have shown an interest in it. Some electives are being offered only once this year. This gives students a wider variety of classes and makes preparations easier for the teachers. The English classes were not confined only to the classroom this year. The Shakespeare class spent a day in Stratford, Canada and saw the Shakespearean play Much Ado About Nothing. The Catalyst staff along with many other student newspapers was hosted by Charlie Manos for a student press conference with Carol Channing. The field trips taken by the English classes this year are one of the ways the department helps add variety to English. 34 academics OPPOSITE PAGE: Top Right: What do I have to do to make you listen? demands Mrs. Sparrow. Teachers not only concentrated on teaching the foreign languages, but they also emphasized that the culture of a foreign country has equal importance to get the full benefit of a foreign language. Mini-courses were used throughout the year to inform the students of the ways of life, customs, cuisines, art, literature, music, and travel of foreign countries. Use of the headphone laboratory is an important aide in learning a foreign language. Cultural fieldtrips are great opportunities for language classes. Mrs. Orlich and French students visited Ann Arbor for a day to see Robert Paquette et Ses Amies, a singing group from Quebec. All language classes visit restaurants which serve foreign cuisines. Mrs. Schneider accompanied German students to Mercy High School to see The National Theatre Company, a group that performed songs, music, 42 academics and dances of Germany. Mardi Gras was a big event in the Language Department this year. Enjoyed by all it is the Language Department's favorite. For the first time the Language Department held their own Career Night. College Representatives were invited to come and discuss their language curriculum. They made students more aware of careers in foreign languages and the various programs offered by many universities. The Language Department is proud of Julie Waldron and Kathy Dempsey who had the honor of representing the United States in France and in Germany, respectively. llThe interest in becoming an exchange student is growing, exclaimed Mrs. Orlich, Department chairperson, We are very pleased in our enrollment and believe this will be the reflection of how languages will be stressed in the universities and the career world. This year's library has a friendly and welcoming new atmosphere; the two people responsible for this improvement are librarian Ms. Nancy Hall and her assistant Ms. Jeanine Palizzi. Ms. Hall came to Harrison from Farmington High and Ms. Palizzi is just beginning her career this year. Both ladies demonstrated their efforts to make the library come alive by sponsoring a name the crab contest. The Hermit crab was named Shell-don by eleventh-grader, Greg Coleman. There were tense moments for the library staff when a student dressed in army fatigues crabnapped ShelI-don. The armed offender, Phil Kennedy, was quickly put back in line by a nip from the crab. Additions such as the Englisthrama reference room and the Student Faculty Production Room help make the library a more informative place, however, Ms. Hall's main goals are HTo make the library a place where a student can feel comfortable as well as being a quiet place for study. academics 57 homecoming '78 Homecoming 78 was packed with excitement. These activities consist of trips to ethnic restaurants, museums, and plays. The sponsors this year were Mrs. Petrini, Spanish Club; Mrs. Orlich, French Club; and Mrs. Schnieder, German and Exchange Club. The Spanish Club began the year with one major goal. The club raised two hundred dollars to buy a magazine not only for Spanish students but for all the students in the Language Department. The club achieved this goal through donut sales and other fund raising projects. The German Club got off to a good start winning first place for the Hindenburg in the Homecoming float competition. The German Club attended the October Fest and traveled to Frankenmuth in December. The French Club began the year by constructing the Concord for the Homecoming float competition. Christmas time found the French Club sharing their Christmas spirit and singing Christmas Carols at a local nursing home. The rest of the year was spent raising money, visiting museums, and attending plays. The French Club is the largest at Harrison claiming over ninety members. The Exchange Club was very proud to welcome two foreign exchange students: Seiichiro Okano from Japan and Frank Smits from Holland. The club showed the exchange students the American culture through several activities such as bowling and square dancing. Two Harrison students also became exchange students for the summer. In addition, UDark of the Moon had an interesting set designed by Ken Farley and built by the stage crew. The stage featured a series of platforms at various levels. Advisor Ms. Sandy Dawson and Editor Gary Keoleian approached Yearbook production with a different perspective not only to produce a quality Yearbook but also to teach every staff member proper production procedure from preliminary planning to the finished product. Phrases such as layout, body copy and galley proofs soon became common language. Planning and production began in early September, from then on the constant pressure of deadlines kept the staff extremely busy. The staff worked weekends as well as after school, sometimes until 1 am. The opening section was expanded this year to 16 pages of full color. The color prints were processed by Meteor Photo, Bill Williams Studio and Staff member David Diskin. The color photos as well as the divider photos were processed over graduated air brush Backgrounds, courtesy of Creative Universal, Southfield, Michigan. The industrious business staff sold close to three thousand dollars in ads. These ads and other fund raising activities helped to defer the $11,000 production cost. llBecause our total staff numbered more than fifty students, we enlarged our present room by removing the adjacent wall of room 329, commented Gary Keoleian. We had a great deal of student involvement throughout the year. Ms. Dawson, the administration and the faculty provided enormous support, we are all extremely indebted to them. 88 activities OPPOSITE PAGE: Top Right: Julie Waldron still hasn't learned how to pose for a candid-don't look at the camera!
