MINISCENCE1975 Harrison High School Harrison, New York Volume 35 CIRCLE CIRCLE CIRCLE CIRCLE Circle Circle Circle Circle Circle Circle circle circle circle circle circle circle In 1974-1975 the students of Harri- son entered a newly built school. We, the Reminiscence staff, were impress- ed by its architectural design, its cir- cular shape. For us it reflected the circles in life. We have attempted to pose some questions about circles, their nature and their relationship to us. Table of Contents Introduction ..........4 Seniors ..............14 Student Life..........98 Underclassmen . .194 Faculty..............226 Business ............266 Left behind: Duck pond, marble lobby, Corners, squares forming squares. Coming to: Circle of Steel, Concrete pillars, lines forming circles. Does a building make a difference? Is it possible to break a circle? % Running and talking in circles Getting nowhere fast Our circles drawn. Do we shut others out? Do we hide, touching no one? Are we spinning ever turning Caught in life's revolving door? When did we begin to question? Was it when we asked a name? Was it when we sought a fact? Was it when we tried to reason? Was it when we learned to challenge? Was it when we found an answer? Was it when there were no answers? Will the questions ever stop? Explosions in the darkness Stars bursting in glory Ever evolving Ever unfolding. Ourselves, like the universe In itself complete And yet... beyond, ) The earth turns; Our new day dawns. It is left to us To touch the sun, To capture its life Within our hands. i t Anthony Joseph Alfero John J. Angelone It s not an easy world out there, but it's not getting any easier. Coming up against teams selected from schools with larger student populations, the Huskies had to adjust. Their 2-6 record reflected that transition and in spite of their losses, they played hard and evenly establishing themselves as a team. All- League Honors went to Tony Alfero, Bill Colombo, Ray Dean and Ed Sinnott and All-League Honorable Mention went to Vito Vendola, Mark Decea, Bruce Miller, Paul Guillaro and Bob Contrata. Even when the chips were down, the instruments were up! Led by Band Conductors, Mr. Pat Contardi and Mr. Peter Horton, the Band had a stunning season. At every game they presented a sensational halftime, introducing new forma- tions, new tunes, and new ideas. The season ended with the Marching Band Championship. With hard work and the help of President Sue Eisenson and Vice President Mike Strauss the Band marched away with a tie for first place. Soccer: The 1974 soccer season started with high hopes. With the memory of last year's best ever squad, the team was fired for a good season. How- ever, after dropping six out of the first seven games — three by only one goal — the initial spirit dimmed. Yet halfbacks Kevin Mulvey and John Cocomazzi inspired the team to play above .500 ball. However, they could only salvage a 5-10-1 record. It was just too late. All-League Honors were bestowed on Tom Viggiano and Hugo Guaglianone. Next year they are determined to take the team to the top. Cross Country: This year's Cross Country team was by far one of the strongest Harrison has had in years. Coach Pete Lopuch salvaged a 4-4 record despite injuries. Shimon Shimon was a powerful addition to the strong team led by Bill Glatz, Bob Maher and Mark Montera. Rounding out the team were Chuck Crowley, Doug Swenson and Sean Eddings. Volleyball: The volleyball team had its first full schedule of inter-scholastic competition this fall. Although the season was not what they had hoped for, it was a good beginning. As a result of hard work, progress was shown. By the end of the season, the team's skills reflected this improvement. 119 Opposite Page: Above. Up, Up and Away Basketball: The 1974-1975 basketball team finally took Harrison to the sectional playoffs. Although they once again fell short of .500, they did play respectably for most of the season. Due to injuries many players were lost to the team at one time or another during the season. This is one reason the Huskies didn't win more games than their record shows. Post season honors went to senior Jamie Glover and junior Jay Alzamora, who were selected to the All-League team and made All-County Honorable Men- tion. Swimming: The swim team finished their finest season with a record of 11-0, the only undefeated winter or fall varsity team in '74-75. Under the leadership of co-captains Mark Morell, Mike Strauss and Tom Turco, and the guidance of Coach Jerry Curran, the team pulled it all together for their best, most exciting season. Records were set by George Scanlon in the 200 yard and 500 yard freestyle, Mike McBride in the 200 yard Individual Medley and 100 yard backstroke, and Mark Morell, Charles Opolinsky, Ed Scanlon and George Scanlon in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Mike McBride received All-County Honorable Mention. Girls' Basketball: The girls' basketball team, after a dis- appointing season in 1974, returned this year with new ability and a strong desire to win. They ended the 1975 season with an impressive 7-1 record. The starters were Donna Passerelli, Denise Marantis, Dawn Menken, Pat Kroslak and Jill Alzamora who were aided by Cathy Fiore, Mariann Brunetti, Eileen Carusona, Peggy Epstein, Margot Jacobson, Lori Mitrano, Pauline Gauci, and Valerie Perl. This was the first year that the team was invited to the sectionals and this honor can only be accredited to the fine effort of the whole team. Wrestling: The 1974-1975 wrestling team can best be des- cribed as young and inexperienced. Nevertheless, their toughness and desire kept them in every match. Such determination will make them an up and coming team which Harrison, in the future, will be proud of. Outstand- ing members of the team were John Arcara, who was in- jured before the Divisional, Frank Arcara and Rich Con- trata, who placed in the sectional tournament, and Ray Dean, who was named All-League. Winter Track: The winter track team was the strongest ever. Through hard work and determination and the guidance of Coach Stuart Close, the team developed into one of the top indoor teams. The team placed second in the League and second in the County Divisional Championships. Outstand- ing performances were posted by Bob Maher in the middle distances, Nick Vetere and Chris Bisignano in the sprints, Greg Toso and Mark DiMaggio in the field events, Bill Glatz and Mark Montera in the long distances, and Tony Ciotoli in the walk. 139 141 Varsity Basketball: First Row: M. If the Huskies are to go anywhere, fielding and pitching will hold the keys. There is a new man at every position except for four. Re- turning All-League catcher Rob Contrata, All-County performer Tony Veneziano plus outfielder Vito Vendola and Stan Harris will be called upon to lead the team. Juniors Bob Bennett and Dan Hulbert are also expected to do some heavy hitting. Pitching chores will be handled by Tony Veneziano, Dan Hulbert and Sam Fanelli. This team has plenty of potential. With hard work, the team should realize its potential. Girls' Track: This is the first year for the girls' track team. They are off to a good start. Although they lost their first meet against Ardsley and Westlake, they came back to beat Bronxville. The girls are determined to improve as the season progresses. The team's immediate goal is to make the sectional times and distances in the running and field events. Fresh- man Kathy Havard has made the sectional time in the 440 run. The rest of the team is determined to make at least one event. With the guidance and patience of their coach, Diane Pandolfini, they are sure they can do it. Spring Track: The spring track team should prove to be the best team ever in the history of Harrison, with the po- tential to go undefeated. At the time of printing, the team is 7-0, beating C.W.L. champs Ardsley and second place Eastchester. So far, under Coach Close's expert guidance three school records have been broken: Mark DiMaggio in the triple jump, Jay Alzamora in the high jump and Nick Vetere, Jeff Mittleman, Bob Maher and Chris Bisignano in the mile relay. Boys' Tennis: After three seasons of maturing, Harrison tennis has emerged as a solid contender for the C.W.L. title. Seniors dominate the single's positions, with Bruce Miller, Glenn Simpson and Steve Friedricks forming a strong line up. As of this writing the Huskies have only one defeat, and intend to keep it that way. Girls' Tennis: The girls' tennis team is looking forward to a successful season. After a winning record last year, the girls hope to make this season even better. Michele Spano, Peggy Epstein, Megan Williams, Pam Jaffey and Denise Marantis have all returned as the team starters. With this central core and a good group of back- up players the team is psyched for a good year. Golf: The golf team is looking forward to a winning sea- son. With Billy Morton as their anchorman, and seniors Mike Santangelo and Ed Scanlon, the team will try for an undefeated record. Fine performances by underclassmen Dave Jacoby and Jim Egan guarantee further success in the years to come. As Coach Art Troilo keeps the team working at full po- tential, the only result can be an undefeated season and a C.W.L. crown. Softball: The softball team is looking forward to a winning season under the direction of Miss Pattie McGee. Return- ing from last year's squad are Cathy Fiore, Lori Mitrano, Donna Passerelli and Joanne Ruto. Together with the other outstanding players, they hope to better last year's record.
