English Our English department provides a broad cultural background and prepares students for college. English grammar and usage is taught, vocabulary is emphasized, self-ex- pression and originality are stressed in oral and written compositions. This develops poise and self-assurance. The study of literature is an important aspect of our English classes. Numerous plays and novels as well as poems and short stories by famous authors are read and discussed. The students are introduced to some of the world's finest literature. They gain an insight into the techniques of writing. We are fortunate in having well diversified English teachers who possess a keen under- standing of the subiect. Mrs. Bennett is the department head. Mr. Heddericg and Mrs. McCloskey, the remedial reading teacher, in- struct the ninth grade classes. The sophomores are taught by Mr. Figliola and Miss Stevens, the iuniors by Mr. Milton, and the seniors by Miss Churchill. English is a required four year subiect. It contributes to a deeper understanding and appreciation of our heritage.
