QQ 'gQ fw2wM2 Q26 Q HS' M9 Foreword With the class of '58 a tradition is estab- lished at Harrison High School, the standard school ring. lt is fitting that the ring, a symbol of our association with HHS, should not change with each class. We are grateful to Harrison that conform- ity in symbols is not translated to conformity in individuals. We, as students, have been encouraged to think for ourselves, to express our ideas, to examine alternatives and select values from each. We are encouraged to taste of the variety of knowledge that our society has to offer, to approach each field with an open mind - with a critical and inquir- ing attitude and not to accept statements and theories as dogma. This approach to knowledge and to prob- lems will be our greatest strength in the years ahead. For we can see that there are no pat answers to the problems our generation must face. There are difficult questions that call for imagination and the examination of different points of view so that effective and worth- while solutions may be achieved. 1 ,A w x Fir? fi it I , I A V :laura lla. .l I ' w 1 X X 'P ii-.-I-. f Y ,ann . -A 21 My f 4 223535335 -.-..--,,, , ,Q -unus- .g,,.y1 Dedication Mr. Bernard Auerbach, BA., M.S. Mr. Auerbach: You have shown your concern tor us in the uncompromising manner in which you have taught us. You have shown your loyalty to us in accepting the responsibility of advising our class and in meeting this responsibility unre- mittingly. You have shown your faith in us by estab- lishing a science seminar, a project which is usually made available to persons of more experience, but which you thought we were capable of handling. We ofthe graduating class of 1958 appre- ciate this concern, this loyalty, and this faith. FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATIGN X X X -gr. J English Our English department provides a broad cultural background and prepares students for college. English grammar and usage is taught, vocabulary is emphasized, self-ex- pression and originality are stressed in oral and written compositions. This develops poise and self-assurance. The study of literature is an important aspect of our English classes. Numerous plays and novels as well as poems and short stories by famous authors are read and discussed. The students are introduced to some of the world's finest literature. They gain an insight into the techniques of writing. We are fortunate in having well diversified English teachers who possess a keen under- standing of the subiect. Mrs. Bennett is the department head. Mr. Heddericg and Mrs. McCloskey, the remedial reading teacher, in- struct the ninth grade classes. The sophomores are taught by Mr. Figliola and Miss Stevens, the iuniors by Mr. Milton, and the seniors by Miss Churchill. English is a required four year subiect. It contributes to a deeper understanding and appreciation of our heritage. This has been a year of great biological innovations and of man's first steps into outer space. As a result, the attention of every American has suddenly been focused on the many fields of science. In Harrison High School, we are fortunate to have a very capable science department, which stresses not only the basic scientific facts, but their underlying principles and future applications. The high percentage of our students taking science courses is due, in no small measure, to the interesting and in- formative manner in which they are pre- sented. The head of our science department, Mr. Auerbach, is a senior member of our faculty and is currently teaching chemistry. His wide experience has been particularly responsible for our effective science program. Mr. Thomas Derivan is our new physics teacher. His fine scientific background and his work on the atomic submarine, Sea Wolf, have enabled him to present his subiect in a vital, interesting manner. Mr. Thomas Derivan Mrs. Margaret M. Richards Mr. Bernard Auerbach Mr. Irving H. Randel and Iguana Our biology teacher, Mr. Irving Randel, has made his subject intriguing. His biology room is filled with a variety of plants and animals which serve to bring the subject of biology closer to the student. Mrs. Richards teaches general science. It is her job to provide freshmen with the funda- mental scientific knowledge which is neces- sary for more advanced studies. Business Department eeeoeeeoe ooooooooogg oooo Mrs. Ellen Hubel The business department offers an education primarily to those expecting to enter the commercial field after graduation. Shorthand and transcription, secretarial practice and secretarial lab, all taught by Miss Matilda Risoli, are courses available to the girl desiring to become an elticient secretary. Typing, Mrs. Ellen Hubel's subject, proves essential, not only to the business student, but also to the prospective college student. In order to learn how to cope with the every day processes and legal entangle- ments of the business world, classes in business law, sales management, and introduction to business are taught by Mr. Guido Zambernardi. Various other courses are bookkeeping, oFfice practice, and business arithmetic, taught by Mr. John Capik. An individual, upon successfully completing work in the Business Department may then take advantage of the many opportunities open to him in the business world. Mr. Guido Zumbernurdi ..a-- V Miss Matilda Risoli Mr. John Capik Y , X Arts The students of Harrison High School are not only striving for a high academic goal, scholarship, but also for the development of aesthetic values. The Fine Arts Department of Harrison High School provides the student body with many opportunities for acquiring this. It offers several outlets for self-expres- sion. In the field of art, Mr. Charles Dawson offers courses in various aspects of art, in- cluding mechanical drawing. Miss Madeline Dickey, director of the Home Economics De- partment, trains future homemakers. In the if Miss Madeline Dickey department of Industrial Arts, Mr. Stanley Waffle instructs his students in the use of many tools including everything from a hammer to a paint brush. Those students who are musically inclined may participate in the Har- rison High School Concert and Marching Band under the direction of Mr. Pat Contardi or in choral work also directed by Mr. Con- tardi. The purpose of the student council is to promote active participation in the school government by providing ample opportunity for students to express their thoughts and carry out their actions. With outstanding coordination and coop- eration, the student council achieved many successes this year: it acquired discounts for Harrison High School G. O. members at local retail establishmentsg it sponsored The Heart Hopf it created a student advisory committee to better faculty-student relationships. Miss Edith DiPace, supervisor of the affairs of the G. O., has benefited the members by training them to become alert citizens of our school and community. Early in the year Mr. Lewis Milton, our faculty advisor, led an intrepid but inexper- ienced band of students down to the 17th Annual Yearbook Conference at Columbia University. The staff of Reminiscence has applied the knowledge gained at this conference to the '58 yearbook. By using original format and more extensive writing, the book has achieved cl new informative informality. The staff thinks of this book as a step to- ward originality in the annual production of Reminiscence. Being original takes a lot of hard work and bothersome thinking. lt is diffi- cult to determine what contributes to a good yearbook. The editors of Reminiscence have tried to give you what you want. If anyone reading the book has any criti- cisms of it, good or bad, the editors of Reminis- cence 1958 ask you to direct them to the edi- tors of Reminiscence 1959 as the former are in sympathy with that fortunate group. National Honor Society Selection into the Active National Honor Society is the highest honor Harrison High School can bestow on one of its student body. These outstanding students, chosen by a faculty council, have exhibited the highest qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and service throughout their years at Harri- son High. Through the conscientious efforts of the members of this honorary society the high standards of our school have been main- tained and enriched. It is to these people that the faculty and student body give tribute. The Probationary Honor Society is com- prised of those students aspiring to member- ship in the Active Honor Society. The pre- requisite for this association is the ability to maintain an average of 9O'X:. ACTIVE HONOR SOCIETY: Front Row, Ieff to right: Ann Morgan, Barbara Schlesinger iSecretariesH. This club, sponsored by Miss Edith Di- Pace, stresses individual participation where- ever possible. The discussions are organized and carried out under the direction of the students. The Current Problems Club has always been active in school affairs. It is one of the organizations which sponsor the foreign stu- dents from the Herald Tribune Youth Forum. ln addition, the Current Problems Club pre- sents two assemblies each year, the first to familiarize the student body with the foreign students' countries, and the second to intro- duce the students themselves. These discussions give the students an opportunity to express their own views and to benefit by sharing in the opinions of all the members of the club. The yearly trips which the club takes prove very profitable. Recently it has visited both the United Nations and Columbia University. FOOT A quick glance at the Harrison High School Varsity Football Team's record of three wins and five losses would seem rather unimpres- sive and disappointing, however, it is the tale behind the scenes which tells the true story. From the very beginning, the Huskies had to overcome many handicaps. The most obvious and serious of these was the general youth- fulness and inexperience of the squad, with less than half the team seniors, it seemed that greenness would be the major obstacle in their path. When Harrison lost its first game to Blessed Sacrament, 13-O, there was a sigh of despair and resignation heard from the more pessimistic football fanciers. Fortunately, the Huskies practiced and improved harder and faster than ever before, until finally they reached the point where they were able to pluck the Eastchester Eagles, l3-0. Bulakowski. y eegg pg e I 'K VW ,xi N, BALL The seemingly matured Harrison Huskies next took on the Pleasantville Panthers, only to be defeated 20-O by growing pains and a superior Pleasantville force. This loss seem- ed to galvanize the Huskies into action, for they took their next two, defeating Hastings 24-7 and Horace Greely 'I8-O. It was then that the floor caved in, Harrison lost its three remaining games, being beaten by Saunders 39-0, Bronxville 20-7, and by our arch-rivals, Rye, 39-0. The totals showed Harrison third in the S. W. I. A. C. race with a league record of 2-2. The Junior Varsity showed great promise as it came through with a highly successful season, passing the .500 mark. With the remnants of this year's vastly im- proved Varsity squad and the talent coming up from the Junior Varsity, the Huskies of next year will be the team to watch. LOOK OUT, RYE! BASKET For the Harrison High School Varsity Bas- ketball Team, it was a season of ups and downs. When the last ball had swished through the net, the Harrison hoopsters found themselves well over the .500 mark, finishing out the season with 'IO wins and 7 losses. Although the Huskies failed to defend success- fully the S. W. l. A. C. championship which they won last year, they easily walked away with the title for the New York State Section I Class B Tournament for the second consecu- tive year. This feat was accomplished by beat- ing Horace Greely 62-48 in the Semi-finals and Lakeland 49-32 in the finals. The commencement of the season saw Coach Fred Fiore's Huskies start off with their best sneaker extended, by decisively whip- ping Port Chester 56-32. Whatever the situation, Al Aragona C375 was always in there fighting, when a ball got loose, he really went for it. fb BALL After splitting their next two games, losing a squeaker to Gorton 57-56 and defeating Pleasantville 67-63, Harrison dropped two to Port Chester, 40-33, and Rye Neck 51-36. The Hastings game saw the Huskies capture their first home-court victory, as they won 65-32. Following a loss to Rye 55-43, the Huskies roared back to take two straight from East- chester, 75-49, and Blessed Sacrament 59-42. In the remaining six contests, Harrison split even, beating Hastings 66-45, Blessed Sacra- ment 72-67, and Eastchester 56-51, and los- ing to Rye Neck 84-53, Rye 46-37, and Pleas- antville 58-55. Under the guidance of their new coach, Art Troilo, the Harrison J. V. had a great sea- son, finishing with an 'l'I-4 record which included a five-game winning streak. This strong showing indicates great things for the future at Harrison. Useless, indeed, are the attempts of the Rye Neck players to stop Clif! Tamis 123D as he goes up for another quick two-pointer. SPRING Since the Reminiscence goes to press before the Spring sports season has actually begun, it is, of course, impossible to report on the various teams' interschool achievements, instead, we have tried to show the efforts put into prepar- ing the squads for their actual games. It is one of the most inflexible axioms of the sports world that the team which runs the smoothest and most effectively in a given game is the one which devoted many long, hard hours of prac- ticing and perfecting the fundamentals of the particular sport, be it track, baseball, golf, or any other. The actual game is but a proving ground for the principles employed in organ- izing the various components of the team into a well-running unit. This year's golf team, coached by Fred Fiore, is comprised of experienced and proven seniors and some very promising underclass- men. The 'I958 Husky Linksters should be able to continue their winning ways of last year. SPGRTS The baseball team, piloted by Coach Ed Garrity, is, with a few exceptions, the same as the previous two years. Although the past two seasons have been times of famine, from all indications it looks as though this will be the year that the Husky Baseball Team develops into that unstoppable combination of good hit- ting and even better defensive play. Coach Art Troilo's track team, while burdened by a lack of lettermen, displays an abundance of poten- tial material. With a little experience tucked under their belts, the boys should be able to come up with a successful season on the cinders. These are only predictions, it would be fool- ish to try to guess the actual outcome of the season. You can be certain, however, that no matter if it's win or lose, the men of all the teams in Harrison High shall have fought their hardest down to the last pitch, race, or stroke. Harrison High School girls who exhibit the highest qualities of personality, scholarship, and sportsmanship can be selected annually for membership into the Leaders' Club. The specific prerequisites for this society are an average of 85'Xa, a thorough knowledge of the fundamental rules of athletic games, and the comprehension of the more intangible values of good sportsmanship. The primary function of the members of this club is to serve in all athletic capacities in the gymnasium. Leaders assist in the scoring, timing, and managing of girls' sports events. All events are conducted in an orderly fashion as a result of the efforts of the Leaders' Club. Doing useful work during the entire school year, the Leaders' Club meets bi-weekly to plan the sporting events of the girls' physical education department. Girls' Basketball Wl1ere's flue ref?
