We did not look for great things from them for we realized their limitations, and the handicaps under which they labored. Their stamina and spirit were quite evident in their first two games against bigger and more experienced players. The third game on the schedule resulted in a victory, the first in two years. Great was our rejoicing, and great our happiness. However, the problem of too little against too much raised its ugly head for the next three games, and were forced to accept defeat. The last game of the schedule saw the team defeat our neighbors, Queen of Peace, by a comfortable margin. While we did not set the state afire with our record, we did have the satisfaction of knowing the boys played the game to the best of their ability. We are not ashamed of themg rather are we proud of theml Both they and Coach Shields have had to face great obstacles. Both are truly deserving of our admiration and respect.

O l St. Cecilia's at Harrison ............ 3 O Verona at Harrison .................. O l A record in soccer of five games won, four lost, and two games tied might be viewed as a disastrous one for Harrison High. However, an exam- ination of the record of this year's squad brings forth some enlightening statistics. The four games in which we suffered defeat were played against the top contenders for honors this season-Verona and Chatham. There were but three regulars from last year's Championship Squad on hand when Coach Barber called first practice and in view of this fact the l943 squad has nothing of which to be ashamed. Composed as it was of boys who were competing in interscholastic sports for the first time, its members gave an excellent account of themselves. The games were by no means walk-avvays for the opposition, and only after a grim struggle did victory desert our side. No one can say our players ever lost heart, or ceased to fight until the last whistle. That they did not win the coveted state honors is no disgrace. Rather have they brought added glory to themselves and to their coach by their unconquerable spirit. Q53
