Above; School Board, L to R: Rumsey Swallow, Jerry Brandt, Kay Haskln, Shirley Hamp, Dale Dancer, Dave Murton, Ken Haskell, and Superintendent, Carl Cratsenburg. This year graduation ceremonies were staged at Hughes Memorial Field at 3:00 pm on May 27th. This was the first year that the ceremony occurred outside. All previous graduations were held In the gymnasium. Senior sponsor, Mr. Ducham, said, I wanted this class to be different. Everyone was hoping that the graduation ceremony woud be a success this year, to help promote outside ceremonies for the years to come. All seniors were excited for the day that awaited them. Gowns were ordered, and plans were made. The color of the gowns were a magnificent burgandy and pink. Roses were bought for the girls, while the guys wore carnations. Fathers and grandfathers also received carnations, while the mothers and grandmothers received roses. Except for the weather, this year's graduation was very successful, as relatives and friends poured into the bleachers to watch these fine young men and women change from the children of yesteryear to the adults of the future. Lower left corner; Keith Mayfield received an achievement award for helping in the transition to a new administration. Unpredictable Michigan weather did not dampen the spirits of the Class of '79 even though rain seemed imminent. MORE PICS AND EXTRAVAGANZA ON PAGES 126 and 127. Rena Sharp, Editor, Hornet Reflections In case you haven't noticed, Hornet Reflections is 16 pages bigger than the 1978 Hornet. When we first met a year ago color pages were a fleeting dream. Thanks to the Senior Below, J. Lowery, J. Rebeck, J. McClain working hard. Below, I to r; K. Fries, C. Currier, J. Lowery, and P. Spraugue. Class this is the HCHS book with color since 1976. Successful promotion led us to order a printing run of 450 volumes as compared to; 1978 — 330, 1977 — 300, 1976 — 185. Selling more volumes enables us to offer a bigger and hopefully better book. If you enjoy Hornet Reflections then do everyone a favor and order a yearbook for 1980, afterall, it's a good reflection on you! Far below, L to R; J. Collins, professional photographer, M. Miele, professional wall support, and T. Whittaker, professional typist. Bridge Building Contest — Would you believe that one box of toothpicks and one tube of glue, plus the creative ingenuity of drafting students, could create a bridge capable of holding 588 lbs? I first got the idea from a school shop magazine. I read where a college in Illinois, for a class project on structural drafting, had a bridge building contest, said Scott Savara HCHS Drafting teacher. The contest went great though the contest isn't over yet. Two teams. Dean Boulton with Darwin Carroll and Craig Thompson with John Amick are still in the running. When the weather clears, these two teams and their bridges will try again. So far they've held 588 lbs. Bridge Building Contest ’79 117 The picture above was not the picture intended for that spot. The picture we needed was two frames further on that roll of film. We reordered the right picture three times and still received this shot. So, nearing our deadline and in utter desperation, we used this picture. Out of over 2700 pictures we shot this year, this is our only major mistake. Not bad, huh? This picture depicts some of the fine work done in shop. Above, L to R, the shop students and their projects: R. Labadie; wood bowl, M. Iutzi; wood bowl, C. Sharp; stereo stand, S. McLean; lamp, D. Limpede; bench (not shown), and M. Roberts, Industrial art instructor. Dedicated Preceeding page, bottom, L to R: picture by J. Hitchcock, drawing by P. Yockey. Above, cartoon by J. Hardy. Below, picture by J. Collins. Bottom right, picture by J. Hitchcock, top right, pen and ink drawing by P. Yockey Art teachers; S. Greer, P. Yockey. Arguing is bad, it hurts people and makes them blue, but making up counts. Swimming is a drag, if you do not know how, so learn before you die. I entered the woods, I found a nest of robin eggs. Soon they will be born. The wind is colder, the nights are getting shorter, Winter's on it's way. The air blows softly, through the trees, they bend forward, dancing in the wind. The wind blows, leaves fall it gets cold, snow starts to fall, the trees are dying. I see the horse running. Soon it fears of being caught. Now it is gone. Dead? There are ants in the woods. There are termites in the wood, both of these are bugs. Rain is pouring down The spider in the window. I wish it would stop. A frog on the grass Sits awaiting its dinner A fly is captured. I walk through the woods On a very sunny day On lunch time at school. Standing tall and proud all alone, not in a crowd resembling a cloud. It is very cold, I click together quickly, my teeth from the cold. Kelly's a cool name. But it is a girls name too. Still, I like my name. I'm happy today, But what about tomorrow? I hope I'm not sad. When the rain comes down I feel a very cold chill, then everything stops. The Winter is cold, and the Summer is hot. What are Fall and Spring? Sometimes I am bored, and sometimes I am happy, what makes me that way? The wind flows swiftly trees crash swiftly to the ground, animals hide. Here it comes, quick, sharp, It's the shape of things to come. There goes my sports car. (C.M.) The dew is here now. The birds kiss the butterflies. Now the dew is gone. The sun is shining, the beach Is filled with beauty, OH, what a bomb sight! Someone likes to dream, another one crushes it. Dream on anyway. A rose is a rose, but a nose is a nose and you must be careful. On a dark clear night The stars in the sky shine out beautiful night. Winter, cold and dark blanket of snow on the ground birds have left till Spring. The snow is falling, but Spring is just about here My patience is gone. The grass is covered The snow is piling up high Winter is almost gone. Live life to the max. Tomorrow you may not see then you will be gone. Animals are free Oh, how I wish I could be. Wish that I was free. Foosball is quite fun The ball goes so fast and quick Watch close or you'll miss. Under the starry sky. Dig my grave and let me lie, down with a will. The sky Is blue of the worlds beginning life through the years gone by. I like school alot it doesn't seem to like me cause I got a D. jHAw Haiku Is a Japanese art form using words to construct a poem of three lines, with a syllable count of 5-7-5. The Haiku on these pages was written by HCHS students in their creative writing class. Thanks to Joel Hardy for the illustrations. Cold apple cider Reminds me of Halloween Dark, Spooky, goblins. Crying is for fools, Not for the courageous ones. Which one can you be? The noisy crowd came I look t'ward the West, •‘arnping through the train station The sun fading into the sky to catch the last train. Darkness once again. Weaving driver was really Intoxicated undeniably The black and white car following closely behind noticed and lit up. Heart lept to throat as he slowly braked his car and pulled off the road. Deputy O'Toole took him to the station to the breathallzer. Result positive Into the detox tank and worry tomorrow. The sun Is shining Snow Is reflecting blinding, finally melting. What I hate to see Is cruelty to animals It makes me real sad. In Summer It Is hot. In the Fall It Is very cool, In the Winter It's cold. The sky Is blue The leaves are green The tree Is dying. I hear bees humming They are collecting pollen To make their honey. If I was an ant I would feel like I was small And a human was tall. Life Is far too short I find It easy to waste, but so do others. The fox will run In The woods as the fox hunters and their hounds chase him. The wind and the snow often make a nice glow but do not separate. The wind In the south the snow around us within may It rain rain rain. Chairs are weird kind of but then so are other things too so everything Is. Summer Is a pretty time you can go water skiing And have lots more fun. Springtime Is when leaves turn. You can breath In fresh air too. Have a good SPRINGTIME. Winter is very cold. The snow will get your feet wet. So stay In the house. Haiku Is the way Japanese write poems Short statements that tell. I wish I were high. When I am I feel good about everything. Fire burning hotly every flame Is different yet so much alike. Caterpillers stretch climbing trees and eating leaves spinning their cocoons. When It rains down hard I snuggle deep in my bed Hearing lonely beats. It was September. The seventh day Keith Moon died. May he rest in peace. Fragile daffodil swaying in the blazing sun brings joy to everyone. A soft mellow sky purple-pink colors reflect the mood in my eyes. I was on my farm when I saw a young stray calf so I ran after it. Silently snow falls upon green rolling hills while I sit warm inside. I look through the windows and I can see you inside I'm called Peeping Tom. One day our beagle got out of her pen alone and I went after her. Tonight is the first game of the season this year. [t could be lots worse. Surf pounds forever against a forgotten shore. Footprints wash away. Cold apple cider reminds me of things in the fall All the leaves fall down. Crying is for fools Not for the courageous ones. Which one can you be? Today at football I took a tremendous fall While catching the ball. Crickets are roving underfoot and so thick I can't walk at all. A piece of paper Wad up a piece of paper Toss a wad of paper. Springtime blossoms and Summer breezes on the pond Fall leaves Winter's Ice. Genuflecting trees are laden with golden leaves 'til the wind sweeps past. Leaves turn golden brown and fall swiftly to the ground. Winter natures rest. As I look northward I see the summer sun melt Darkness comes swiftly. Some rocks are bigger But sand is very, very small pebbles are the best. A car wreck occurred The driver has been injured teach that man to drive. V i' T 121 4 M M H August. . . To reminisce is one of the most mixed emotional things I fee I there is to do. You can look back in time and remember so much and at first you smile, but then you stop and think; where has it ail gone?
