Harrison 48625 Welcome to Harrison Community High School. The day was August 28th. The doors of the school, like the pages of this book, open to reveal the events of the 1977-78 school year. Students and teachers fell in for the gala of events. Spirit Week started everything off. Next came Homecoming which led into basketball season. Numerous dances were staged after the home games. Christmas showed throughout the school with decoration competition and a dance which included our own Christmas tree. Valentines Day saw girls and guys alike wearing colored carnations from loved ones or secret admirers. Dreams , the Junior Senior Prom had a very good turnout. The Seniors also had a catered smorgasborg dinner dance at the Lion's Club. Although warm and muggy, commencement turned out excellently for the 137 graduates. The gymnasium was filled to capacity while parents, relatives and friends watched the seniors receive diplomas. The doors now close to ready the school for another year. The Harrison High School Band has set quite an impressive beat this year. Profits Included $1,500 raised by selling pop, records, and magazines. This was used to purchase equipment. The 56 member band performed publicly 11 times, and played 23 different songs varying from rock, classical, jazz, country, and patriotic. This year the band was divided in three units; marching, symphonic, and pep band. The band participated in several competitions and 22 members went to solo ensemble. For 1978-79 the band intends to expand in membership between 60 80 members and increase budget to become a band the school can be proud of. Haskin, R. Webb, and J. Olson were the tri-captains. The 1977-78 team was very young, with only four seniors starting on offense and defense. We have 18 letterman, who in 78-79 will return. We are looking forward to a veteran team next year. M. Haskin and J. Olson should be congratulated as both were named to the first team defensive unit on the all conference team. It marked the second year in a row that J. Olson was named to the first team. M. Haskin was also named a member of the all area team nominated by the Saginaw News. Pictured Above: L to R Row 1; P. Football The best game we played was against Beaverton on their home field. It was not a game of high scoring but a game of high quality defense power. We gave everything we had to keep Beaverton from scoring. The defense used was a 4-5 defense, which is 4 men in front and 5 behind. Our starting 4 were: Left anchor, T. Roberson, Left tackle L. Allen, Right anchor B. Haskin, and Right tackle J. Roth. Our two corners were T. White, and A. Shell. Our three line backers were C. Sharp, D. Boulton, and P. White. The safety's were C. Brandt; alternates K. Elya and M. Carlstrom. The Harrison Varsity Golf Team Was made up of mostly seniors this year. The team included Bill Abbott, Rick Foote, Mike Hensel, Tim Morris, and Mike Kosciuszko. The J.V. TEAM consisted of Bill Larson, Tom Keusch, Jeff Eaton and Alex Erestein. The team finished with a 7-7 record. Good for fourth place in the conference. The Hornets took 3rd at the conference match. Mike Kosciuszko was voted MVP by his teammates. Cross Country Below are some pictures of the 1977-78 Cross Country team members. Since Cross Country Competition started in Harrison in 1973, the team has never experienced a losing season. 1977 was a year to keep this fine tradition as a team assured. Chuck Tomes was voted most valuable player of the year, and later participated in the state finals in Sturgis, Michigan. These athletes started training August 15, 1977. Training consisted of running 6 to 9 miles a day. October 8, at the Ferris State Invitational, the team ended their 2 month season with a 5-3 record. Dean Boulton, a sophomore, was team leader in assists and steals. The Junior Varsity worked hard all season long, but were plagued by a lack of experience as well as some very untimely injuries. J.V. versatility, both offensively and defensively, impressed more experienced squads. The scoring of M. Ryder, rebounding of L. Harcourt, and quick thinking of guards L. Fritzinger, and M. Knoll, resulted in good balance and excellent team work. A record of 13-2. Girl’s Junior Varsity Pictured L to R, Standing; T. Sharp, D. Aldrich, M. Young, J. Roth, M. Carlstrom, D. White Freshman Basketball The Freshman basketball had a successful season, finishing with a 10 win, 5 loss record. They started slowly, losing 3 of their first 4 games, but after the Christmas break the team came out winning and at one point won eight in a row. Key games came with overtime win at Evart and an exiciting, hard fought victory over Farwell. In that game Mark Carlstrom, leading scorer on the team, scored 32 points. The second leading scorer for the season was David Jones. Most of all the season was a success because of the outstanding teamwork and spirit displayed by all the members of the team. Front row: J. The girls this year placed 7th in the regionals out of 19 and the boys placed 18th. If more of the boys finished the course they might have placed higher. The most valuable skier for the girls was Jann Brockway and for the boys, Kim Franks. CONGRATULATIONS! ski team, for a successful year! T. Galford J. O'Leary Seated L to R: T. Sharp, D. Meek, P. HCHS Junior Varsity The 1978 J.V. Baseball team had a very fine year. The finest pitcher was T. Putman. The leading hitter was C. Sharp. Although they are a young team with seven Sophomores next year's team should be good. Mark Gassman coached very well. This was his first year. Above: B. Larson waits Below: Coach Gassman Below: T. Putman eyes TRACK There were alot of freshman that really helped the team. They should be good in the next couple of years. Freshmen like Mark Carlstrom placed fourth in the conference meet. Tom Rolls showed good speed in the 220 and was a big help in the 880 relay. This team took fifth place ribbon at the conference meet. The mile relay took second. Seniors did a good job too. We lost some very good runners like Chuck Tomes who broke the conference record in the 880 run by four and a half seconds. Jim Bohmier, Mike Haskin, Chuck Tomes, and Mark Carlstrom took a second place medal in the mile relay. Rich Webb took first place in the conference for the 120 high hurdles, and second in the regionals. Most valuable - Chuck Tomes. The girl's track team had a great turnout this year, with a membership of 23. The girl's participated in a number of events ranging from the hundred yard dash and relays to field events which include discus and shot put. In the past meets exciting performances were given by L. Harcourt - high jump, L. Shafer - shot and disc, K. Bleakly - mile run, L. Fritzinger - 440 dash, M. Knoll - 100 yd. dash, and C. Cook and T. Hoag - 2 mile. The captain this year was L. Shafer and the co-captain was C. Stachowiak. Our most valuable player was M. Marko according to team votes. The most improved player was J. Upton. D. MacKay scored 2 home runs throughout the season. Our pitchers were M. Ryder, S. Little, and D. MacKay as a back-up pitcher. Team work helped overcome some moods and with returning team members next year should be good. Thank you for being a friend. - Only the good die young. - With a little luck, we can work it out. - I am what I am, if you don't like it, tough. - I can do all things through Christ which strengthenth me. Philippians 4:13. - Hold fast to your memories for they may be all you have left. - Da-Da-Da-that's all folks. - Sometimes I wish I were a child again, skinned knees and easier to fix than broken dreams. - It don't mean a thing if it ain't got no swing. - Baseball, hot-dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet. - Does she? Or doesn't she? - Let's get Rowdy. - In one door and out the other. - 24 + 24 = 48, how in the world did I graduate? - I began a pathway, now I am at the end. - Why wasn't I smart, instead of beau- tiful? - That's life, Baby! - One lesson I learned is that good friends are hard to come by. - Keep Happy! - Never! - Keep a cool, fool. - Go for the gusto, don't stop until you get it. - Don't walk in front of me I may not follow, don't walk behind me I may not lead, just walk beside me and be my friend. Suddenly it was May 26, 1978 and we were finishing a portion of our life's work. We thank everyone at HCS for giving us the opportunity to learn and discover part of what we are as well as what we hope to become. We leave HCHS physically, but what we learned will follow us for the rest of our days. Farewell HCHS . . . Hello world . . . Board Of Education We appreciate the guidance and direction these people give to assure that HCS offers quality education. Pictured above L to R: Dave Murton, Rumsey Swallow, Dale Dancer, Kay Haskin, Shirley Hamp, Jerry Brandt, Ken Haskell, and Superintendent Carl Cratsenburg. We are not normally in the business of dedicating yearbooks, but we offer this space to two DEDICATED people; Coach Dick Harris and his wife, Pat. Thanks to both of you for making HCHS a place to learn and grow. Special People ADVERTISING Alumni Association The Harrison Community Schools Alumni Association is the oldest active high school alumni group in Michigan. In 1978 we will celebrate 76 years of meeting annually to renew old friendships. At the beginning when the school was much smaller complete banquets were held; at first in what is now the Masonic building and was then called the opera building. Through the years the event has been streamlined because of growing membership and is now a coffee hour held every Memorial Day weekend at the high school. For the past 2 years the high school drama department has provided the entertainment with a series of skits. In 1978 the Alumni Association banquet was on Memorial Day weekend. Each year the graduating class is the honored guest and the coffee hour is held to introduce the newest members (the current graduating class) to other alumni and initiate their membership in Michigan's oldest active high school alumni association. The officers for 1978 are: President- John Gendregeske, President- Elect— Don Morton Secretary- Jan Haskin Treasurer- Sharene Dancer Pictured above; L to R: S. Dancer, J. Haskin, D. Morton, and J. Gendregeske. The Alumni Association officers extend an invitation to all alumni to become a part of the oldest organization of this type in Michigan.
