Our activities range from selling peanuts for Kidis Day to running the city government in National Youth VVeek. Learning how to be good citizens is taught by our school organizations, but We donit stop there. By Working with the civic groups, We are not only practicing what we are taught, but we are pre- paring ourselves for the future. In order to provide a modern and functional cur- riculum, H.T.H.S. takes advantage of new ideas such as our experimental history class which emphasizes films instead of the regular textbooks. The variety of classes makes it comparatively easy for each student to study in his own Held of interest. .il- N The girls spend one hour in the classroom and two hours working at their jobs. We have many organizations in which to participate. Most of the clubs are open to every interested student of H.T.H.S.g how- ever, a few require certain standards which each student must meet in order to heeome a member. During the school year, the students enjoy numerous annual events, such as Homecoming, the junior and Senior Prom, the Music Revue, and various plays. The students look forward to these activities each year. Janet Hall vi ueen, janet Foster 60 Darlene Iarrell HOMECOMING The Homecoming festivities began with the animal pep session on the square and a lively snake dance which formed on the West side of the square and after going around the square slowly continued to make its Way to Taylor Field. After everyone had arrived, another rousing pep session was held, and the members of the Freshman-Sophomore cheerleading squad huried in efligy, a Centralia Orphan. O11 Friday came the colorful Homecoming parade with the Senior Class taking Hrst place in the class division. That night all the Bulldog fans came to Taylor Field to enjoy the game with Centralia. After the game the yearly Homecoming Dance was held in beautifully decorated Bon- nell Gym. At the dance, the queen, who was elected by the members of the varsity football team, and her attendants were introduced. The Purple Clarion reporters play an important role in the quality of the sixteen issues that were published this year. These reporters, who are members of the journalism Club are given assign- ments on various topics of current interest. Stu- dents of any class may become a reporter for this student publication. The ad salesmen are a vital part of the Purple Clarion force. At the beginning of the school year, these students contact businessmen of Harrisburg, who purchase advertisements in the school paper, helping finance our Clarion. 66 The Clarion news bureau is hard at work ws, .Q 'QS CLARION REPORTERS Row l: jimmy Dillon, Laura Ilarnilton, Sara Beth Rice, Lura Larsson, Brenda Craine, Dixie Schwartz, Brenda Gicleurnh. They attended the inusie contest at Mt. Vernon, and performed at the an- nual Christmas Concert. The highlight of the year was their performance at the annual Spring Con- eert. VOCALAIRES The Voealaires, consisting of twelve ineinbers from the H.T.H.S. student body, performed for many organizations throughout the year. They sang at a Rotary Club meeting, appeared on NVSIL TV, and sang for various woinen's clubs during the year. Also, they performed at the an- nual Christinas Concert. T791 it MARCHING BAND The H.T.H.S. marching band, under the direc- tion of Mr. Marshall Cothran, has been a great asset to all of the home football games. With their outstanding marching and excellently executed maneuvers, they thrilled their captive audience at half-time performances. The band also became the center of attraction as it led the annual Homecoming Parade. Playing popular music, as Well as marches and school songs, the band added color to the festivities. I 80 The marching band was also one of the twenty- seven Southern Illinois bands participating in the Southern Illinois Universityis Homecoming Pa- rade at Carbondale. The band spends much of its time and effort in boosting the Bulldogs on to victory, by playing at all home games and pep meetings. Having proved itself many times as a great band, H.T.H.S. students and teachers should be equally proud of this fine organization. DRUM MAJORETTE The darling of parades and football games is our drum majorette, janet Hall. Her job is to direct and lead the hand. Although her job is an exciting experience, it also requires much responsibility, therefore, janet is a vital and respected member ofthe hand. LETTERGIRLS The smiling, highstepping, white-gloved girls in front of the hand are the lettergirls. Dressed in their purple and white uniforms, they spell out our Alma Nlater, Harrisburg. These girls are not members of the concert hand, hut they aid the hand in many Ways. They sell candy, tickets, and serve at many events throughout the year. All of these girls also help the hand as personal boosters. llrinn Nlaiorette, janet llall. ll. Lilmlny Tanner, A. Carol Butler, R. The band sponsors the annual Music Revue to help raise money for trips and other expenses. An- other main attraction sponsored by the band was the Christmas Dance, an enjoyable occasion for the entire student body. The band also plays for special events at H.T.H.S. such as teachers, meetings, Visitation Day, pep rallies, and basketball games. Many band members enter section and state contests which help improve their playing tech- nique. Special Master Awards are given to stu- dents gaining recognition in music. No matter where we were, how important or how tough the opponent we played the game to the best of our ability. We learned that clean sportsmanship is to be more desired than victory. We improved in team play, co-operation, school spirit, sportsmanship, and respected the rules and our officials. Blocking practice is in session. VARSITY FOOTBALL The Bulldogs. under the new head coach, Chuck Hunsinger, were faced with the problem of rebuilding the line up after it was riddled by graduation. XVith a schedule that included the best teams in the State, the boys fought hard, but were on the short end of the score most of the time. Their best game, scorewise was the 16 to 14 win over Marion. Darrell Biggs, Don Pickford and Bon lNlaynard were the stand outs on the line, while Bob Pave- Ionis, Darrell Duke, and Harold Beal kept the ball rolling in the backfield. Nlost of the time the coaching crew was trying to build the sophomores and juniors into a solid team for the next year or two. A few outstanding lower classmen were Bobby Karnes, Larry NVise, and Larry Conrad in the backfield and john Pick- ford and jerry Kane on the line. XVith the fine players that are remaining and promising players that are being brought up from the Bullpups, the football outlook for the Bull- dogs is very bright. i901 Our co-captains shake hands with Eldoradols eo-captains before the kick-off, VARSITY FOOTBALL '95 my gi 12, uu 005 C0114-lu-S: Mr. -I. BASKETBALL The Bulldogs, starting off in superb form, won four hard-fought games. They then traveled to Herrin, who was rated number one in the state, only to be edged out by a narrow margin of four points. The game was hard fought, and the fans could not ask for a better exhibition of basketball. After suffer- ing a defeat, the Bulldogs traveled to john- ston City to suffer another loss. Harrisburg, having an off night, played poorly. Met at VVest Frankfort the Redbirdis height proved to be the deciding factor in the next contest. At this stage, the Bulldogs were hungry for a victory and Centralia happened to be our prey. Playing a hard, fast, and driving game, the Bulldogs Coasted to victory number five. TRACK The track men of Harrisburg High had a most successful season under the coaching of Mr. Calu- fetti. Although the record did not clearly indicate the seasonis high-points, it did show that Harris- burg was well represented in all meets. Bill Yates, the dash man ofthe squad, left many records broken or tied in his high school career. Bill participated in two-twenty, four-forty, the varsity relay, the high jump, and the broad jump. Another high spot was the varsity relay team composed of Larry VVise, Larry Barnett, Don Pedro Biggs, and Bill Yates. They placed or fin- ished first in every meet of the year. Although the outlook is great for next year, the seniors Who graduated will be sorely missed, and the under- elassmen will be expected to take up the slack where the seniors have left.
