Commerce means to us preparing for iobs in the office. We studied short- hand, bookkeeping. typing and special courses in business English. We learned the use of all kinds of office ma- chines: the Marchant. the Friden, the Burroughs Cal- culator, the Ediphone. and felt we could qualify for any job after completion of the course. Little did we know while taking dictation what sur- prises our transcriptions would have in store for us.
