We studied short- hand, bookkeeping. typing and special courses in business English. We learned the use of all kinds of office ma- chines: the Marchant. the Friden, the Burroughs Cal- culator, the Ediphone. and felt we could qualify for any job after completion of the course. Little did we know while taking dictation what sur- prises our transcriptions would have in store for us. It should be smooth by now. The Industrial Arts represent industry, and are often referred to as the doing phase of general education. The idea is to put the whole boy to work - his hands as well as his head. Two years of wood- work and two years of mechanical drawing are offered. 441 9 The Industrial Education program of Harrisburg Township High School consisted this year of mechanical drawing and wood- work taught by Mr. Iohn P. Chapp to 130 students. Trades training for senior stu- dents with two days of related instruction and three days on-the-job experience was experimentally tried with an enrollment of 12 students. 77 A pnzewmner he hopes! 'GER I ., Remember all the fun we had at those big school events? - Home- coming. the class plays. Music Review. Pow Wow, and the last big moment which we waited so long for - the Prom. Even the little get- togethers in our spare time, or those gossip fests over a coke will never be forgotten. These social events played an important part in our school and helped to develop social Know-How which is so important in the life we are to lead after gradu- ation. Lt 'S The usual bonfire started the Homecoming celebration vxith a bangl The H. T. H. S. band, clad in jeans and letter sweaters, lea the long parade ct cars and a w1nd1na snake dance started by the Cheer- leaders. A bonfire whose tireg' arms seemed to reach the sky was al' ready started by the time the parade reached its destination. The cro '.'.' d formed a circle around the tire and the Cheerleaders led them in several school yells after which short speeches were given by Coaches Davison and Calutetti and Ce Captains Ronnie Ziealer and Frank Logsdon. ,X 7 Getting all het up about Homecoming! Crepe paper tlyfng everywhere and the schoc. was surrounded by floats waitini: to be trimmed for the big parade School was let out early, and at A1133 P, M, the riiarnmotfi Hornecoixf ing Parade started. This parade, the largest in the history ot the H. T H. S, was headed by our school band. . Roses on a background of silver. What? Why the 1951 Keystone Prize-Winnerl The Hi-Tri with its five aims represented walked off with second prize. The Hi-Y float all decked out in balloons and paper napkins gave us some stiff competition. Homecoming The Herrin band followed in the middle of the parade and the Har- risburg lunior High band brought up the rear. The floats were the most outstanding and unique that we've ever before had. Prizes were presented later that night at the half of the game. The school first place winners were the l95l Keys' stone car and the Purple Clarion Float. A smash-up ball game with Herrin followed the parade and we slightly skunked them 3540. At half-time a wonderful performance was pre- sented by both the Herrin and the Harrisburg bands. The Annual Homecoming Dance was held in the gym after the game where the sound of trumpets intro- duced the Queens procession. The Pulchritude of H. T. H. S.!! queen, Georgia Miley escorted by the football co-captains Ronnie Ziegler and Frank Logsdon, was followed by her three attendants' Dixie Brothers, juniorg Venita Hicks, sophomoreg Iune Blackard, freshman, and their escorts David Guard, Beb Dalton, and Ronnie Reigel. The crowning was done according to traditional ceremony, and the queen stepped down from her throne to start the first dance. Soon the floor was filled with dancers and our l95U Homecom- ing was ended at the stroke of twelve. From the time of the first football scrimmage, to the end of the thrilling hardwood season. through the races of the cindermen and to the end of the last home run H. T. H. S. students proudly watched their favorites give their best for the dear old alma mater. Center: Coach Davison Left: Assistant Coach Calufetti Right: Assistant Coach McKee Football I95O The Harrisburg Bulldogs smashed to one of the greatest seasons in the history of the school. Harrisburg bowed but once, and that time to an unlucky set of unavoidable circumstances. The first game saw the Bulldogs down a fighting Murphysboro team 13-6. Eldorado was Harrisburgs next victim, finally bowing 12-U, The Bulldogs first conference foe was Mt. Vernon Whom they downed 20-7. The next week Harrisburg crushed Arthur Trout's Centralia Orphans. The Bulldogs then journeyed l6U miles to Taylorville, and defeated this scrappy crew l9-l2. Harrisburgs bid for the conference title was furthered by Wins over Herrin 35-O, and Marion 42-ES. The Bull- dogs' only loss came at the hands of an outfought and outgained West Frankfort Bed-Bird team, 7-6. Harrisburg pushed their forts from one end of the field to the other, but a questionable decision on a point after touchdown cost Harrisburg its only defeat of the season. ln their last game, the Bulldogs came roaring back to dump a hopeless Benton squad 33-6. This incidentally was the same score by which the Harrisburg Bull Pups of two years ago, these same boys, lost their bid for an undefeated season, and strangely enough, Benton was the opponent in that game. This H. T. H. S. team was rightly ranked the best in Southern Illinois, and highly rated in the entire state. x47vn ala si .L.2.rl l Iohn Wells Bill Hemnann Bob Conover Charles Hughes Mike Hal -- . 7'i. .. DON STOUT, Senior 5 ft. 10 in., 165 lbs. Smart, rugged, and aggres- sive Don earned his starting place on the Bulldog eleven by hard work, blood, and sweat. Don's abil- ity to snag a pass turned many a near failure into a spectacular play. For his brilliant work he was awarded the end position on the second All-State Team of the Champaign News-Gazette, BOB V CONOVER, Senior 5 ft. 10 in., 155 lbs. As quarterback Connie's clever ball handling bewildered opponents through- out the year. Assigned the Safety spot his fleet- ness in returning punts proved to be of great benefit to the Bulldogs in every game. e492 I OHN WELLS, Senior 5 ft. ll in., 210 lbs. A strong and rugged tackle, and fast for a big man, Iohn was used on both offense and defense. He was selected on Arthur Trout's All Star Team, and received honorable men- tion on the Chicago Daily News All-State Team BILL HERRMANN, Senior 'S ft., 185 lbs. Bill rejoined the Harrisburg team for his senior year after playing two years at St, Phillips in Chicago. Fast, aggressive, and smart, Bill proved to be one of the better fullbacks in the State. He received honorable mention on the Daily News All-State team. Sharing honors with his teammate, Val Gribble, Bill filled the fullback posi- tion on the Bulldogs South Seven Championship team. CHARLES HUGHES, Senior 5 ft. ll in., 195 lbs. Rugged dependability and all around excellence made Charles an invaluable cog in the machinery of the champion Bulldogs. Charlie finished four years of football as the regular varsity center. MIKE RALEY. Senior 5 ft. 10 in., 145 lbs. The smallest man on a squad of giants proved his mettle time after time in the tough quarterback position. A deadly tack- ler, and though used mostly on defensive, Mike proved his ability as a ball carrier many times during the year - his 85 yard return of a punt for a touchdown in the Benton game proved to be one of the longest runs for the Bulldogs during the season. 1. 19 A ' I im. I Kenneth Horning Hal Iohnson Harlon Seats Donald Chambers Merle Nelson KENNETH HORNING. lunior 5 ft., lU in., 170 lbs. 'lBobo is one of the two non-seniors to earn a starting assignment on the first eleven Bobo proved that he could dish it out as well as take it. His ability to lead interfer- ence will greatly strengthen next year's attack. HAL IOHNS ON, Iunior 6 ft. l in., 280 lbs. The biggest boy on the squad, Hal proved to be immovable as a defensive tackle. Very fast for a big boy his smashing tackle of a Benton player in the Armistice Day game was acclaimed as the hardest tackle seen at Taylor Field during the entire season. Hal will prove to be a bulwark on the line for the l95l Bulldogs. HARLON SEATS. Senior 5 ft. 9 in., 150 lbs. All-State Guard - l5U pounds of rugged, determined play throughout the entire season earned for Seetse top recognition throughout the State, He was chosen on Arthur Trout's All-State Eleven, The Champaign News- Gazettes First Team, and The Chicago Daily News Second Team. There was none better in the entire state. DONALD CHAMBERS, Senior 6 ft, 180 lbs, End or tackle, Dons ability to play either of the aforementioned positions well proved of invaluable benefit to the Bulldogs through the season. Don well earned the title The indispens- able substituten . , MERLE NELSON, Senior 6 ft l in., l9O lbs. One of the strongest men on the l95U squad, Merle played defensive guard. Because of his size and strength, Merle, throughout his four years of service was recognized for his rugged play. His smashing tackles brought grief to many opponents. RICHARD GRIFFITHS, lunior 5 ft. ll in., l7O lbs. Griff , a co-captain of the Bulldogs l95l team, is expected to carry the back- field load next year Since both regular fullbacks were seniors, and will graduate this year, it was aptly summed up by Coach Davison when he told Richard, Youre it for next year. 4450? Iunior 6 tt. 2 in., 165 lbs Don is an all around fellow able to play end, tackle, or guard with an equal degree of skill, Hee a big boy with plenty of fight and spirit, and will be a welcome part ot the 'Sl Canines. on mit Don Howard lames Zimmer BILL CUSIC. Ed is an outstanding pros- pect for next year's team. He is a fast-charging, hard-hitting guard with plenty of speed. Ed was unable to play the last few games of the season because of an appendectomy. FRED WILMOTH, Sophomore 6 ft. 2 in., 240 lbs. What Little Catfish lacks in age he makes up in size, Fred earned his letter as a defensive tackle. Varsity Squad Bullpups Playing a mediocre brand of ball, the Harrisburg Bull Pups finished the season With one game over the .500 mark, Winning four and losing three. The pups were a hot and cold team, Winning some decisive victories from Eldorado, Herrin, Marion, and West Frankfort and then dropping a couple of hard setbacks to Centralia and Benton. The Pups also lost a close conference game to Mt. Vernon. Track Team The Bulldog cinclermen opened their season with a four way meet with Harrisburg, West Frankfort, Eldorado, and fohnston City participating. This event was won by Harrisburg. ln the Hurst Bush Mineral Area meet the locals took sixth, with approxi- mately thirty schools entered. The Bulldogs tied for third place in the Conference meet and received third in the district. The varsity relay team, one of the Bulldogs main pointmakers, was composed of Gilchrist, D. Howard, D. Ewell, Dowdy and Conover. The two main Bulldog speedsters were lack Lasersohn and Dooley Gilchrist. Lasersohn, who ran the high hurdles, found his fastest official time to be fifteen seconds flat at the Herrin Relays. He qualified for the state and got eighth. Gilchrist won third place in the state finals with a time of 50.8 seconds in the 440 yard dash.
