S. four short years ago! VVith shaking knees we wandered down the halls searching for our classrooms. After a senior had smilingly directed us to the wrong room, we ven- tured in, bewildered, only to be shoved into the dreary cold halls again. For the first three years the honor of serving as class president was bestowed upon Bob Armstrong. Then as jolly juniors we presented the play, Daddy Long Legs. That year, under the sponsorship of Miss Davis, we planned a delight- ful prom for the seniors which carried out the idea of a festive night in old Spain. For the first time in this school's history, our basketball team played in the state tournament. Some of our classmates who had the rare opportunity to play in this tournament were Bob Miley, james Davis, and Victor Brown. What a contrast we, the proud, full-fledged seniors of today make to that timid group of four years ago. XVhen we returned to school this fall, we were given the opportunity of pursuing our studies in a beautiful new building. Our last year has really been a creditable one under the supervision of Miss Louise Rice and the leadership of jerry XVebb. VVhat a year for our football team! XVith Bob Miley as captain, our team ended the season untiecl and undefeated. Our last dramatic production in H. T. H. S. was VVings of the Morning. At our annual Pow VVow this year, two of our number, jimmy Wilscun and Eldith McCormack, were chosen Don and Senorita. Some of our more industrious members helped edit the Keystone. VVe seniors are looking forward to and sincerely thank the juniors for what we know will be a very enjoyable prom. Time ticks on! Juniors u ,- v-q-wr l , ,r , 29 A. - C - y X ' f 'fe V -f 5 . During football season, the boys added to their treasury by selling candy and soft drinks at the games. They also sold pencils stamped with the football schedule. This lively group tried to have a finger in all the activity pies around school. When subscriptions to the Purple Clarion were being taken, the Hi-Y was among the first organizations to subscribe 100'Z. To them also went the privilege and honor of presenting the rings to the Don and Senorita of the annual Pow XVOW. Animated discussion-and sometimes heated argument-on almost any current subject was the favorite entertain- ment for the club when there was no outstanding speaker for their meetings. Mock initiation has been abandoned in favor of the more impressive formal ritual which this year was put on by the Christopher Induction Team after the annual banquet held at the Presbyterian Church. The Hi-Y had two teams represented in our noon basketball games. At a tournament held Feb. 25, to which neighboring teams were invited, the local team reached the final round, but was defeated 30-22 by the XVest Frankfort team. Evans, Gates, Malone, Hilliard, Butler, Roberts, Johns, and Stricklin were the members who played on this team. Several Hi-Y members attended the annual Older Boys' Conference held this year at Pinckneyville. As usual, a spring picnic for the members and their guests ends the year's activities. u...llaurtesu...lrlendshlp...leadershlp Every girl in high school is a member of the Hi-Tri League. The aims of this league are character, friendship, courtesy, pleasure, and success. The watchword is loyalty. The officers for this year were Helen Kwet, presi- dent, Eldith McCormack, vice-president, Eleanor Waiclelis, secretaryg and Helen Blaine, financial secretary. The sponsors were Miss Johnson, Miss Mason, Miss Schmidt, and Miss Hill. In April of 1938, the girls held their annual Mother and Daughter Ban- quet. A pot of gold at the end of the rainbow was the theme of the banquet, and this idea was carried out in the program and the decorations. An all- girl orchestra furnished part of the music. In November, the girls of the freshman class, and any others who had not been initiated before, were taken into the League. The beauty of the ceremony and the music was enough to inspire the Freshmen to set for themselves higher and, therefore, more desirable ideals. On March 19, the League sponsored a recital given by Miss Louise Rice, pianist, and Mr. john Schork, soloist. This gave interested townspeople and us an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the talent of two of our own faculty members. Each summer a few girls attend Camp Seymour at Decatur, Illinois, where they meet and engage in sports and pastimes with Hi-Tri girls from every corner of the state. The officers were Ida Louise Moore, president, Doris Green Randolph, vice- president, and Eldith McCormack, secretary. One of the main activities of the club was the Hallowe'en party held at Mr. Underwood's home. Decorations, costumes, and refreshments carried out the festive idea of goblins and spooks. Chinese checkers and pinochle provided entertainment. During the year, these French enthusiasts surely must have absorbed some of the French love for food and gaiety as well as a knowledge of the language. for another peppy party with all the Valentine sentiments was held in February. At the beginning of the second semester, about twenty new members were initiated. and made their appearance at school one morning in peculiar attire-the girls with different shoes, a paper hat, and no make-up, the boys, with bright rosy cheeks and kitchen aprons. Most of the members had correspondents in France, both boys and girls. Some of the letters Were in English, but most in French. Many members re- ceived interesting post cards, pictures, souvenirs, and magazines from their foreign friends. The club felt honored to be asked to present a one-act play before the Foreign Language Section of the Illinois Education Association held at Carbondale on March 9. This year Venus, Doris McKinney, and Juno, Mary Eva Smith, shared the presidency. Minerva, Betty Jane Stephens, acted as scribe, and Miss Mary Payne was the sponsor. The club met on alternating NVednesdays. For some of the meetings, interesting pantomimes illustrating scenes in Roman mythology were presented, reports on Roman life were made, and many Romanized games proved interesting. On Jan. 20, new members were initiated at the home of Martha Benson. Each initiate performed a stunt, some of which revealed unexpected talent. Mr. Schork was the accompanist for Dorothy jean Staiger and conducted group singing after the stunts and ceremonial rites. Not one of the initiates was sorry he had cast his lot with the Romans. The slogan, NVhen in Rome do as the Romans do, was carried out to the last detail in the Roman banquet in April. A three-course dinner, ab ovis ad mala, was served to the members of the club and a few especially invited guests. The tables were arranged in the form of a hollow square, and stu- dents from the beginning classes, dressed as Roman slaves, served the guests. After-dinner entertainment included a Roman wedding, dances by Roman dancing girls, songs, and prophecies. In May, a picnic ends the activities of the Latin Club. ment Hlla esnlv sh of make-up...CurIaln Cues... The Purple Curtain took its part in this year's activities through the efficient work of the officers, President Helen Blaine, Vice-President Anna Poulos, and Secretary Lois Reynolds, in co-operation with the sponsor, Mrs. Eddy. The club was responsible for the purchasing of tloodlights and paid half the cost. The Purple Curtain's greatest moment this year was the Amateur Show with singing, laughter, impersonations, prizes, and the gong for a few unfortunates. For one hilarious day at school, dolls, curlers, nursery rhymes, and yel- low ties were evidence of initiation. Final events were not so joyous-- except to old members who wielded paddles without any noticeable qualms of conscience. All injured pride and hurt feelings were later somewhat soothed by refreshments. Each individual had ample opportunity to improve his dramatic ability from September to june. Everyone had charge of a program sometime dur- ing the year, and criticisms were given to all. Meetings were held every other Tuesday after school at which time a study was made of make-up, movies from the dramatic standpoint, costumes, play directing, pantomimes, -in short everything pertaining to stagecraft. The Merit System gave credit for taking part in plays, paying dues, etc., and did much to bring about co-operation. The Dramatics Department also sponsored a Thespian organization, the members of which must have had a major part in a play and have been recommended by the sponsor. The organization subscribed to the National Thespian magazine in which Mrs. Eddy had an article published this year. ed That... The Debate club, ably assisted by Mr. Bonnell, was busy all year pre- paring for its final showdoWns in various debates throughout the year. At a non-decision debate given both here and at Benton, the team boldly put down its views on the question of whether or not advertising signs should be prohibited within one-half mile of any public highway in Illinois outside of incorporated cities and villages except those directly attached to and being a part of the building where the article or service so advertised was being prepared, offered, or sold. Our team was pro , and Benton's was con. Each team presented its argument so well that at one minute we were build- ing more advertising signs, and the next minute we were tearing them all down. Another interesting and appropriate question was that of whether or not a high school student when he enrolls should be required to pay a fee, which would entitle him to admission to all extra-curricular activities of the school during that school year except those where receipts are shared with another school. The Debate club has not only fulfilled its position as an educational extra-curricular activity, but has also sponsored several enjoyable parties. It was through Mr. Bonnell's helpful guidance that such opportunities were made possible. These students have acquired the ability to express themselves freely, effectively, and convincingly. Such experiences have taught them to think for themselves, which after all, is one of the essential factors in attaining success. ellurlain First Ruw, ln-lt tu right llill Lnliznw. The Stamp club was organized this year in order to spread the inter- esting hobby of stamp collecting among H. T. H. S. students-a hobby which proved not only educational but interesting as well. This club consisted of twelve interested members with VVoodrow Dann as president and Miss Mason as sponsor. In making their collections, the students found many interesting stories in connection with them, reports on these were given so that all the members might also enjoy the stories. In looking over some popular magazines and newspapers, there was found an occasional article about a new issue of stamps or an old stamp worth many dollars. These articles were brought to school and given to Josephine Klondike who kept a scrapbook for the club. This scrapbook is now full of interesting stories, stamps, and pictures of stamp collectors. Some students were surprised to find that many famous men, including President Roosevelt and several of his Cabinet, have this excellent hobby. Members also kept individual stamp books, vying with each other to see whose book could be neatest and most complete. New friends were made by corresponding with boys and girls of foreign countries, by which method the club hoped to help spread world peace. Some of these letters received were written in English, and some in the native tongue of the correspondents. Lots of fun was had in getting these letters translated. Throughout the year. the Stamp club welcomed visitors and suggestions to help make this organization more interesting and valuable. Is...lestlng...Judqnnq... The Future Farmers of America is an organization of high school stu- dents whose aim is to prepare themselves for farming. The second section of their creed reads as follows, I believe that to live and work on a good farm is pleasant as well as challengingg for I know the joys and discomforts of farm life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny. With new members properly taken care of in the long-dreaded initiation ceremony, this year's Future Farmers settled down to the serious business of corn, grain, and stock judging contests. The biggest event of the year was the sectional corn and grain judging contest held at Eldorado where the H. T. H. S. corn judging team, composed of Bob Alvey, NVesley McDermott, and Dayton Dallas, placed third among the sixteen schools entered. Bob Alvey won first in this event. Harry Harrelson, Arthur Kielhorn, and Walter DeNeal comprised our grain judging team. At meetings held every other Tuesday afternoon, debates and speeches were given, jokes exchanged, and a recreation period enjoyed in the gym. A public speaking contest held in April, and a judging contest in May were among the other activities of the Future Farmers. The club also sponsored basketball and softball teams. The members of the club had special projects which had to do with farm life, and which gave the boys valuable experience. This year they did very well with these projects, the club as a whole showing a net profit of approx- imately 2iSl,750.00. nne...Snaps...Facts... , Lights! Camera! Every other Thursday noon, frenzied reporters rushed to beat the dead- line. Of course, there were some late reporters who had to stay after school and write and rewrite, count and recount the words in their stories. On Friday afternoons, many typists were seen busily pecking away on their typewriters and trying hard to make out the scribbling and to spell unusual names and words. At the same time, Miss Popham an,d the editors sat critically re-checking the copy for further mistakes in grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. Lida Thomas and Gertrude Wilson were managing editors. Violet Kidd was copy editor. Harold Barrow, the business manager, with his assistants, pounded the streets and hounded the stores for advertising. This year's Clarion boasted more features and gossip columns than ever. There was a noticeable improvement in the sport's page under Don Mc- Daniel, john Bennewitz, and Raymond Evans. Don covered football, Ray- mond, the basketball, and Benny wrote the sports column. Many of the Clarion reporters turned salesmen every other Wednesday morning and waylaid you at all entrances of the building shouting, Buy your Clarion! The interest in choral work in our school has become greater from year to year, and the large enrollment in this year's classes showed that more and more students are sharing the privilege and enjoyment of singing good music. This increased interest resulted partly from the success of our music department last year in the Big Eleven contest when our Boys' quartet won first place, the Girls' quartet tied for first place, and our Boys', Girls' and Mixed choruses came off with first honors. Directed by Mr. Schork, our quartets and choruses have held regular rehearsals all year and have been trained in three, four, and eight-part harmony. The Mixed chorus has made several public appearances. Last year it gave a short concert at the Southern Division of the Illinois Education Association meeting held at Carbondale, appeared before the Woman's Cul- ture Club during the music festival in observation of music week, sang for the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, and made several broadcasts. This year, their Christmas Cantata was enjoyed by the whole school, and their singing on the square at Christmas time helped to spread the Yuletide spirit. Spring this year found the music department up to its ears. On April 25, Harrisburg was host to the first part of the district music festival. Mr. Schork, district chairman of the state vocal association, chose students from both Girls' chorus and the Mixed chorus to sing in this contest. As girl soloists, Phyllis Durham placed second in high voice, Dorothy Jean Staiger, first in medium voice, and Peggy Lentz, first in low voice. Boy soloists were Edwin Evans, who placed second, and Raymond Render, who won first. The girls' quartet, composed of Phyllis Durham, Peggy Lentz, Dorothy Jean Staiger, and Helen Kwet, also placed first. On April 1, when the second part of the music festival was held, both Boys' and Girls' Glee clubs won first place. All those with first ratings were eligible for the Illinois state music contest at Centralia April 15. Late in March, came feverish preparation for the keen rivalry in the Lowell-Emersonian contest, and then training for the Big Eleven. The new building sounded very much like a music conservatory during the months of April and May. Peggy Lentz, Dorothy jean Staiger, and Raymond Render, as soloists, and the Girls' quartet, composed of Phyllis Durham, Dorothy Jean Staiger, Helen Kvvet, and Peggy Lentz, attended the national contest at Anderson, Indiana on May 12. In the hnal stanza, Kurto crossed pay territory twice, covering a total of 114 yards. Gates concluded the scoring by racing 57 yards into the end zone. Cairo was downed, 24 to O, as the Bull Dogs played one of their best games. A pass, Miley to Davis, allowed VVilliams to plunge across the goal line from the two-yard line. Then Cunie scored again as the official's horn bewildered the Cairo Trojans. Rmb Miley returned a Cairo pass 35 yards to pay territory, and Hob Miley returned another 45 yards to score behind the excellent blocking of Langford. Miley, spark plug of this win-all team, is an ideal triple threat man. In recognition of his powers, he was elected F. B. on the Honorary Big Eleven All Stars, and F. B. on one of the Chicago News' All-State teams. JOHN EVANS The boy that was always there to fill that hole in the line, or nab that loose runner. He was elected Center on Pat Harmon's All-Star Team as one of the best centers in the state. JAMES DAVIS The long and lanky boy who snagged those looping passes from Williams. Col- lege fans will probably hear from him. CARL WILLIAMS When you see Cunie out there, sling- ing those passes from H. B. position, you don't wonder that our team was a confer- ence leader. He also indulged in some ex- cellent running. 'PETE KURTO Pete filled the position of blocking back very effectively. When he carried the ball on reverses, he always showed the opposi- tion his cleats. JAMES WILSON This one hundred thirty-five pounder shared Rt. End honors with Mattingly. He played football by this motto: Brains are more effective than brawn. WALDO MATTINGLY Big and rawboned, Waldo had no trouble in blocking those punts. No opponent was too big or rough for him. HARKER MILEY Brub set the team off to a good start by calling winning signals. Being a brother to Bob and still a sophomore, he should become a great ball toter. SAM BREWNER Being small for a guard, he always let his beard grow--it made him look tougher. Sammy played man-sized ball all the way. ARCHIE DRURY Archie is hard and tough and when he played football, he made sure the other team knew it. Archie played guard with Brewner. LOWELL LANGFORD Big Lowell, the man who made the holes in the other team's line. Lowell may some- times talk like Donald Duck, but he can play a great game of football, too. BOB STIFF Stiffy played in one tackle position while Lowell filled the other. Stiff always did a thorough job of his work whether it was stopping the other team or making holes for ours. BILL HACKNEY Our next year's Captain merited this honor by his excellent playing. Bill is one of those few boys who are big and smart too. His motto: Use your head when possible. RAYMOND EVANS Big, handsome, and healthy, Ray covered his territory when pinch-hitting for Stiff or Langford. He should make a big name for himself next year. BOB MORRIS By his hard work Bob has gained the re- spect and admiration of all. He will have no trouble filling the hole left by Stiff. GEORGE SULLIVAN This Irish lad, after his experience at guard this year, should make an excellent one next year. His place-kicking all year was above par. MICKEY DUDONIS Mickey, whose play all season was above reproach, is sure to be in there next year working hard at one of the end positions. THOMAS VAUGHN Arkie plays football as he runs the 100 - he just leaves them behind. He should be one of the first-string backs next year. FREDERICK GATES Since Fred made that touchdown, we be- lieve he has more of the same on tap. He should be another of the backs next year. BOB PERRY Bob has the distinction of being the only freshman on the squad. His play at wing- back has a lot of promise for next year. J. A. STRICKLIN DI. A. performed well as a reserve center this year. He isn't a big boy, but he makes up for it with plenty of spirit. 3 I Fl. S X..-3 af' x .m 4 ,ik . . il .rf R URXG tk. U.
