I understood very little Russian, but the guard finally got it across to me that the letter had come in a Red Cross package It was the first mail I had received since I was transferred to the Siberian salt mines four years a o I waited until the guard had gone on to whip another slave Then I went behind a salt colunnand opened the letter In the dim light, I read Dear Guy I heard of your misfortune, and thought I'd write and try to take some of the Siberian chill off your morale Harrisburg has certainly changed in the last fifteen years, during which, as you know, our country has been in a state of constant warfare All of our old classmates are doing their best to help the war effort.
