I fi 1 Histor of lumni Association I X l iz. Bs Bs I HE Alumni Association was organized at the Girls' High School on West State Street, june 29, 1876. Through the efforts of Prof. L. O. Foose, who was then principal of the Boys' High School, the organization was made a permanent 0116. At this meeting, after hearing a number of speeches made by distinguished I graduates, officers were elected and a constitution was adopted. Mr. J. R. Osman, ofthe Class of 1875, had the honor of being elected the first President. The Association continued to hold meeting every year after this. In 1881 Mr. Kilburn Chandler offered as resolution to the effect that dues should be collected from every member of the Association. This resolution was unanimously adopted In 1887 it was decided not to hold the business meeting in connection with the annual reception, but to hold it in September. The separate business and social meeting proved a failure on account of the lack of attendance at the business meeting. In a few years the old method of holding the business and social meetings together was resumed. In 1896 the Association Was agitated over the question of allowing the graduates of the commercial department to be admitted into the organization. On the oth of April an amendment to the constitution was made and adopted to the effect that the commercial graduates were not eligible to membership. The constitution of the Association prohibits amendments from bei11g acted upon at the same meeting as presented. Therefore o11 the 13th of April another special meeting was held and an amendment was presented and passed which made the matter stand as before. In recent years a great many pupils have graduated from the High School and the Association has increased its membership Wonderfully. The Association now nu111bers over thirteen hundred active 111en1bers and about five or six hundred associate members. The annual reception given to the graduating class of each year has bee11 the means of holding the organization together and gives an opportunity for class-mates and old acquaintances, who in the stress of busy lives often do not meet during the year, to live over again their school days. 61
