l K 1 History of Sophomore Class IX I ZLBQBQ ARLY in the morninv of the second da of April, IQOI, there was an unusual stir in the Grammar Schools of the city Soon whispers nent fly ltlg like the wind, 'We go up to High School to-dayfl And go We o Y . . 7 . 1 Y Y . -saw 2 . . if Q' ' 45. 1 v . , did. Of course ue 11 ere iery dignified Cor tried to bej, as we walked up to the High School in squads- the girls walking on one side of the street, the boys on the otherg we entered those dread halls 266 strong. We had fully expected the faculty to greet us with open arms, but instead of an ovation were unceremoniously hustled into Room Three. V After a few minor difficulties We were comfortably settled in the rooms assigned to us, and began to study in earnest: indeed so industriously did We apply ourselves to Latin, Grammar, Algebra a11d the Metric System that our teachers became worried and told us that we must not study Zoo hard. We must have 1nade a good impression upon the Seniors, juniors and Sophomores that Hrst Week, for they did not stand and stare at us- as We dauntlessly went to and fro in those endless halls? At the beginning of the second Week came Chapel. How nervous we were as we stood in our rooms awaiting the signal, and when it did come how we scrambled up tl1e stairs! One of the boys was so eager to mount to those realms above that he fell up stairs, almost breaking a step. W'e came out of that trial with flying colors, and were duly congratulated by our principal. The next disturbance to enter into our peaceful Freshmen lives was demerits- yes, quite a number of us received demerits that first term. 'What class doesn't get some demerits? Then came examinations-how we studied and toiled, burning not a little midnight oil! The majority of us came through unscathed. Naturally as Freshmen We did not do anything startling but were content to Hlay low and say nothingf, for had not one of those grave and reverent Seniors told us that Freshmen must be seen and not heard? Oh, yes, the Sophomores defeated us in base-ball by a score of 20-12, but then they had several of the ,Varsity players on their team. After a refreshing vacation we returned to school with lessened ranks, ready for hard work. Then came the Freshman-Sophomore foot-ball game, and what a glorious game that Was! Certainly we won-oh, the score? W'ell the score was o-o. After the Christmas vacation We all set to work, looking forward to that great and glorious day when we should be no longer Freshmen. SI
