I X I History of 1903 I x I ' 3s3e3?s HA Mighty Hand from an exhaustless urn, Pours forth the never ending Flood of Years. Ba ik. Ba S the rushing waves bear all before them, year after year rolling along. And now for a little while the class of IQO3 rides the topmost wave. The present is here, rosy-tinted and bright, but it is only for a very little QQLE BSS while, and then the Class of 1903 will have been swept along by the flood, and will be forgotten, its history only remaining, for the good that men do live after them. On a balmy Spring morn, in April, JQQ, the old ,Burg was aroused from its lethargy. Something unusual seemed to be astir, many new faces were seen in the vicinity of the High School. Allseemed eager and happy. Who were they, and where were they going? This mighty band of conquerors were the Freshmen coming to demand entrance to the halls of learning, to the staid and sacred precincts of the High School. They came not in fear and trembling, But with a mighty shout, To give the Sophs a warning- They knew what they were about. Weelcs before there had been a commotion among the upper classes, the Senior Class had passed into history, giving place for advancement to the lower classesg the Freshmen became Sophsg puffed up with pride they walked about with that wise and all important air so characteristic of the class. But from the first 1903 made its presence felt, its merits and demerits swiftly appeared, the ohcice soon became a favorite retreat for the members, going slowly down the stairs one step at a time to be ushered into the august presence, not knowing what was going to happen. The way seemed long, The stairs made us weary As we wended our way To the office drearyg 'Twas thirty D's Made this mournful crowd, Then why should the spirit of mortal be proud. 36

Elhv Qlarvvr nf 'HH Qellslk. O High School on a cold and stormy morn Flocked many children, anxious and forlorng They were the Freshmen of Class Nineteen Three, About to launch upon ambition's sea. Flanked by disdain and stares they bravely filed To rooms where grave instructors on them smiled, And led them through the flowery fields of lore, Their youthful voices, they were taught too raise ln chapel, strong, while singing songs of praise. A year of ardous toil, and then 'twas told, i They proudly through the halls as Soph'mores strolled Exams. o'ercome, '03, with numbers few Sailed safely on steered by her loyal crew, Whose white and crimson no one dared defy. Though bright their fame still brighter did it shine When Junior boys, with eloquence sublime, Stirred every heart 'til one and all declared That with them, Pallas had her wisdom shared. The curtain lifts upon another year, From the ship of '03 the Seniors cheerg The willing maidens help the youths now few To guide the ship, and keep Minerva true, Whose aid oft' crowned their games with victory. The sea is calm, the ship speeds smoothly on, 'lT1e shore is gained, the lengthy voyage doneg With joyous hearts they leave old '03, Yet through a mist of tears they wait to see The dear old vessel sink, while sad they grieve, And think of severed friendships ere they leave To risk their own frail bark upon Life's Sea. But the trip oft repeated, lost all its terrors, and it soon became a pleasant place in time of trouble, where you always found-plenty of company, companions in misery. In the Fall this class achieved its first victory, the Sophs confidently remarked that they would teach the Freshmen to have proper respect for their elders. But alas l after the foot-ball game they became strangely silent, why? The score was o-o, favor of the Freshmen. In foot-ball this class has never known defeat. Although the Freshmen year seemed a long road with no turning, yet it was nevertheless very pleasant. The greenness soon wore off, and then as members of the High School, they became wildly enthusiastic. just as the trees were putting forth their first green leaves in honor of the new class to come, 1903 stepped foreward into the Sophomore Class, boldly Haunting their newly acquired honors before their lower class mates for, The Wise Soph is full of repose, For every thing known that wise fool knows, His head is well nigh rent in twain, By knowledge that presses his weary brain. The time of the new Sophomores was so taken up in coaching the Freshmen and learning to manage their new studies, that outside aEairs were neglected, so this explains the defeat which the Sophs met in base-ball, but defeat must come to strengthen victory. Winter marks the reign of social gayety and triumphs the time of debuts, and so on December 8, IQOO, the Class of 1903 was formally launched forth, and now for a short time the class enjoyed many honors, great popularity, social recognition which is always affordeda debutante. But this soon passed away, and 1903 settled down to mark out its course just as the other classes had done. The holidays passed quicklyg 1903 was ready to take that most important step-the junior Class. March came in with a roar, and at the same time a mighty shout of anger burst forth and strife and tumult invaded the peaceful halls. Angry students rushed madly about crying, To be or not to beg on to victoryf' Behold the conquering heroes come V' and then with words exhausted, bravely went forth to meet that dreadful foe Examinations. That dreadful foe had suddenly loomed up before them as a dark cloud, completely hiding the brilliancy ofthe junior year from their first sight, it could not be brushed aside, it must be penetrated, the majority penetrated its dark recesses, and proudly entered into the brilliant light of the Junior year. W'hen the Junior year is reached every one feels a thrill of delight. Solemn vows of studying are made and they spend their days in 57
