N THE great world that lies beyond the portals of our Alma Mater where we have been shel- tered for the past four years, great changes have taken place. The mighty World War II has been won. The peace following victory is most uncertain. But the reconstruction has to be challenged with the same energy as was used in the war effort. Under the protecting shelter of these four walls, changes too have come about in us, and in much the same way may we compare the changing events of the world with our high school years. Today, we, the Class of 1947, stand upon the threshold of a new era. In retrospect we can look with new-found confidence upon the trials and tribulations that beset our paths in the last four years of endeavor. In September, 1943, our hearts Hlled with trepida- tion, we embarked on what was to be a new ex- pedition-a journey to the then fog-bound shores of higher learning. We entered now upon an entirely new environment. True, we were children, yet with a difference, for we had received admission to high school where new schedules, new subjects, new class- mates and teachers awaited us. A grown-up atmos- phere pervaded the surroundings, but before the close of the year the bright, green layer of freshness, with which all newcomers at Catholic High are coated, began to wear away. Of course the transition into this new world was not easy, but we were determined to surmount any obstacles that would impede our steady progress toward the shores of Graduation. Gradually the fog lifted a little, and we felt more secure in our new status. It was evident by the wide variety of extra- curricular activities open to us that we were not re- PAGE 18 THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA Mary Arm Simonic A beloved classmate who died at the end of her Junior year. Struggles there were with Latin and algebra and those usual bugbears-the Eight Parts of Speech, but we succeeded in mastering them, and all too soon final examinations were upon us. By this time we realized the enormity of the conflict in which we were engaged, but fortunately we survived, and in due time experienced VICTORY Having successfully passed through the first and most difficult stage of the journey, we were now exposed to the Gallic Wars. We also explored the mysterious interiors of countless innocent frogs and other animals, delved into Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and met for the first time the his- torical difficulties of our fellow students in Europe. And during all this time never once did we lose consciousness of our new-found superiority over the lowly Freshmen. We had advanced a step and could now look down with complacency on these inex- perienced fellow students. We often wondered with amazement if we could ever have been so astonish- ingly green as they were. Yes, truly, we were growing up. Our participation in sports and other activities continued, and as our heads swelled with the knowl- edge we were imbibing, we traversed with glowing colors the dreaded spectres of semester and final examinations, and then for a time again we knew PEACE For several reasons we knew peace, first, the in- viting summer days were at hand which meant sur- cease from toil and study, and secondly, it was during these summer months that the terrible world con-
