E Q, 1. k 1 . , W F X KNXXXV 5 W R sa,-1 uiw g f ,rc , - , Q L , , . ,YV C,- M Under the guidance and protection of Our Lady, King Arthur was victorious in battle with his enemies. Pridwen, his shield, bore the imprint of Christ's Mother. Its owner placed great con- fidence in her protection and never failed to invoke her aid. In every action he performed, it is said that he always sought the guidance of her who is most powerful with God. Pridwen was selected as the name of our year- book with the hope that every graduate who goes forth from the portals of Catholic High School will invoke the aid of Our Lady, and obtain the guidance and protection that she always secured for King Arthur. Thus, as we, the members of the Class of 1947, leave this threshold hallowed by the inspiring in- fluence of Mary Immaculate, Queen of Peace, and take our places in the rank of worldly strife and conflict, we too, like King Arthur and his Valiant knights, will arm ourselves with the shield of Our Lady and go forth faithfully upholding her prin- ciples and reflecting in our lives the exalted vir- tues of her holy life. The mighty World War II has been won. The peace following victory is most uncertain. But the reconstruction has to be challenged with the same energy as was used in the war effort. Under the protecting shelter of these four walls, changes too have come about in us, and in much the same way may we compare the changing events of the world with our high school years. Today, we, the Class of 1947, stand upon the threshold of a new era. In retrospect we can look with new-found confidence upon the trials and tribulations that beset our paths in the last four years of endeavor. In September, 1943, our hearts Hlled with trepida- tion, we embarked on what was to be a new ex- pedition-a journey to the then fog-bound shores of higher learning. We entered now upon an entirely new environment. True, we were children, yet with a difference, for we had received admission to high school where new schedules, new subjects, new class- mates and teachers awaited us. A grown-up atmos- phere pervaded the surroundings, but before the close of the year the bright, green layer of freshness, with which all newcomers at Catholic High are coated, began to wear away. Of course the transition into this new world was not easy, but we were determined to surmount any obstacles that would impede our steady progress toward the shores of Graduation. Gradually the fog lifted a little, and we felt more secure in our new status. It was evident by the wide variety of extra- curricular activities open to us that we were not re- PAGE 18 THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA Mary Arm Simonic A beloved classmate who died at the end of her Junior year. May her soul be happy wilh God. quired to become drudges. Struggles there were with Latin and algebra and those usual bugbears-the Eight Parts of Speech, but we succeeded in mastering them, and all too soon final examinations were upon us. By this time we realized the enormity of the conflict in which we were engaged, but fortunately we survived, and in due time experienced VICTORY Having successfully passed through the first and most difficult stage of the journey, we were now exposed to the Gallic Wars. We also explored the mysterious interiors of countless innocent frogs and other animals, delved into Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and met for the first time the his- torical difficulties of our fellow students in Europe. And during all this time never once did we lose consciousness of our new-found superiority over the lowly Freshmen. We had advanced a step and could now look down with complacency on these inex- perienced fellow students. We often wondered with amazement if we could ever have been so astonish- ingly green as they were. Yes, truly, we were growing up. Our participation in sports and other activities continued, and as our heads swelled with the knowl- edge we were imbibing, we traversed with glowing colors the dreaded spectres of semester and final examinations, and then for a time again we knew PEACE For several reasons we knew peace, first, the in- viting summer days were at hand which meant sur- cease from toil and study, and secondly, it was during these summer months that the terrible world con- flict was ended. lVe could now look ahead with eagerness, since the heavy pall of war had been lifted. Lessons were resumed the following September, aIId we began to enjoy the long anticipated status of Juniors. This year we were able to select our own subjects. Choosing those which would best fit us for our future life, we continued anew our search for knowledge and were agreeably surprised at the new horizons opened to us. Again we did not neglect to take part in extra- curricular life, as was evidenced by the fact that the City Basketball Championship nearly passed to Catholic High that year. The clubs and cultural groups were also augmented by many of our talented members. Later the histrionic ability of a few of our class was ably demonstrated in the three-act play, Freckles, while the highlight of the year was that great social event, the Junior Prom, held at the Civic Club. Then came examinations, promotion, and the quiet and peace of the summer vacation, which in a very short time was succeeded by a period of RECONSTRUCTION We had now risen above the point of youthful dreaming, and were prepared to face the gross reality of our part in the changing complexities of a new world. Study took on a different meaning. Some of our members took part and led the various societies, others participated in the oratorical contest, wrote and won prizes for essays, and did their share in the Student Council. Still others were the mainstay of the Choric Speech Group, Glee Club, Band, and Orchestra. Then came that oasis in the desert-our Three-day Retreat, when with reverent silence, we meditated and considered the place we were des- tined to fill in future life. Toward the close of this four-year journey, the outstanding events were the Junior PI'0ll1 held this year at the Penn-Harris Hotel, the Student Council dances, and the three-act comedy, D0n't Take My Penny. Then to climax it all we became the City Football Champions for the first time in the history of Catholic High, while in basketball, too, we held our own and almost became State Catholic Champions. As the great day finally arrived and our ship pulled into port, we stood with mingled feelings of joy and regret-joy in having achieved our goal, and regret at the severance of the close association with our dear Alma Mater. The moment of parting leaves us with a sincere hope that through our efforts, the grace of God, and the aid of Our Lady of Fatima, Queen of Peace, we can greatly assist in this stupen- dous task of reconstruction and the seeking of a just and lasting peace. And as we entered Catholic High and were swept into the whirlpool of activity and the quest for higher learning, we realized what little we really did know. Tremblingly we encountered strange faces, rooms, teachers, subjects, and still stranger customs, such as, different teachers for each class, study periods, activity period, saying a prayer before tl1e beginning of each class, listening to announcements over the loudspeaker. Soon, however, we be- came accustomed to the new regime and went about tackling problems in algebra, imbibing Christian p1'ineiples, conjugating and translating in Latin and French, as well as learning endless new things in science and history. Extracurricular activities afforded us an outlet for our surplus energy. At the end of the first marking period it was the Freshmen who topped the list. Our interest in football, basketball, glee club, and pep squad was manifested by the large number who participated in them. Soon we had mounted the first rung of the Ladder of Learning, but we continue our climb in subsequent years, we shall never forget the experiences, and anxieties of Hour green year. SISTER BERNADETTE, S.C.C. HE members of this club work at the House of Hospitality on Seventh Street twice each week. This zealous group gives its after-school hours to instruction and entertainment of the colored children of that neighborhood who come there. The most successful event of this year which this group effected was the conversion and baptism of an ailing colored man. Interests, however, are not only spiritual, but temporal as well. During the year the club members secured a self-player piano for the center, and hauled in a truck load of apples for the winter. Uceasional parties at Halloweten, Christmas, and Easter, help greatly to break down race prejudice. VERGILIA Afivzser: S1s'rER M. CLARE PATRICK, I.H.M. HE aim of the Vergilians this year was to enhance their lives with the classic eultu1'e of the ancient Romans. Yet even in school the postwar influences of the day were felt as Yergil's Pius Aeneas replaced Caesar's Gallic Wars. Various activities were conducted monthly. Original skits were presented, ac- companied by games and songs. During Latin Week, a display of Roman dress, armor, equipment, and utensils was exhibited in the library, while panel discussions on the pros and cons of Latin study were conducted. An outdoor picnic in the spring climaxed the club's activities. E IOR C THULIC CTIO Adviser: Sisrau BERNADETTE, SIRC. URING this year the Catholic Action Club has been moving with the calendar. In October the members sponsored the Family Rosary Cam- paign and enlisted soldiersl' to watch with Christ, their King, During November on Armistice Day, Holy Mass was celebrated at school for fallen CHS students, while in December the club sent more than 200 letters to schools through- out the country, asking cooperation in the project of flying the American flag in honor of our nation's Patroness. The Church Fnity Octave was observed with prayers and hymns in January, and tl1e following month a Sacred Heart Valentine poster was made to remind stu- dents of First Friday observance. Then came March with skits for Vocation Week, followed by April showers in the form of penny collections for the missions, and lastly May with home shrines constructed to honor Mary, our Queen.
