Speed Demons journeyed to that city on May Led by Big John Trephan, the Fliekinger men next vanquished the Harrisburg Academy and Middletown High School track teams in a triangular meet- held at McDevitt field on May 7. Trephan was a triple winner, as he captured first place in the shotput, discus and 100-yard dash. Other first-place winners were Tezak in the pole-vault, Salinger in the 220-yard dash, Hinncnkamp in the 440-yard dash, Russ in the broad jump, and McCarthy in the javelin throw. The final count was 7533 for Catholic, 4-'llfff for Academy and ll for Middletown. On the following Saturday, six men represented the Speed Demons at the Villanova Interscholastic Invitation Meet and scored 10 points to finish seventh among 18 schools and third among seven C'atholic teams. Against some of the best high school competition in the East, John Trephan took fourth in the discus and shotput., Frank Hinnenkamp and Rudy Tezak tied for fourth in the quarter mile and pole- vault respectively, George Salinger captured fifth in the 220-yard dash, and tl1e relay team finished fourth in their event. Next on the schedule came Gettysburg. The C'oAeH FL1eK1NeI1:1c 14 and were handed a 6635 to 4924 setback by the Little Bullets of Gettysburg High. Four boys, George Salinger, Frank Hinnen- kamp, .lolm Trephan and Rudy Tezak scored 41 of C'atholic's 4915 points, but received little help from their teammates. Relay Team Gains Recognition Special honors went to the relay team of the Speed Demons this year for they came through with some outstanding performances. Composed of George Salinger, Sophomore speedster, Rudy Tezak, Mercury-footed dash man, Anthony Petrasic, small but swift Junior, and Frank Hinnenkamp, tall, lanky anchor man, it racked up several important victories. The first of these victories was at the pre- viously mentioned Shippensburg Invitation Meet where this fast foursome coasted into an easy triumph against good opposition. On April 25 these boys traveled to Philadel- phia to take part in the Penn Relays, at which the cream of the country's athletes always perform, and captured first place in their event. For this they received gold medals and a large plaque. The victory was a personal one for Coach Earl Fliekinger who, only a few days before, had been seriously injured when struck by a javelin at practice. However, his team knew how badly he wanted to win and did not disappoint him. At Boyertown, on May 6, the Speed Demons, with .Iolmny Trephan taking Petrasic's place, entered the quarter and half-mile relays and won their heats in both events, for which they were awarded plaques and silver medals. The regular mile team finished third in their heat but it was the fastest one of the day, so they also captured third in the finals. Une of the best performances of the year by the mile foursome took place at the Villa- nova lnvitation Meet. Here, in competition with ten schools that were all either first or second at the Penn Relays, the Speed Demons ran a sensational race and finished fourth, only 10 yards behind the winner, St. Thomas More of Philadelphia. A new school record of 3 minutes, 33 seconds was set by the Speed Demons at Villanova as Rudy Tezak and Frank Hinnenkamp, who picked up 20 yards on the anchor lap, each had 52 second quarters. Thus another track season comes to a close and once again Catholic High is near the top. Although the squad this year was the smallest in the history of the school, yet it compiled the best record ever made, which shows that it is quality, not quantity, that counts. PAGE 75
