You are anxious, deeply anxious, are you not ahout the future? Of' course you are. You and your countrymen have good reason to he concerned. lfor, to he carefree in such an hour as this is the prerogative of infants and fools, when peace is gone and men are living as though the Prince of Peace had never come, with your natural patrimony exhausting itself on war, with mankind seandalized at nian's in- humanity to man, with youth's rightful hopes hlasted and your whole American heritage in jeopardy. ln such an hour you are thinking hard, pondering a predicament which is yours to solve though it is not of your making. lfalse prophets and false ways, repudiating the hlaster's way, leave to your generation a heritage of havoc, and you are rightly indignant. A challenge to your fortitude, therefore, if ever there was one, confronts you on your lluarz 10 i :ggi ' 1 4 5 , i graduation day, the like of which, in importance and intensity, you have never heard or read almout. ln spite of our ingrained Christian alihorrence of war, in spite of our ahiding Christian love for our every fellow- man in the world, the fact is plain for any clear-sighted man to see that, in the present circumstances, the very continuance of our Catholic way of life in .-Xmeriea our freedom to offer sacrifice, our freedom to preach and to hear the word of God, our freedom to administer and to receive the Sacraments, our freedom to have Catholic schools-'drfarm, the very endurance of this freedom is now wrapped up in a military victory for the l'nited States. This victory will come, hut it will not come easily. You go now to your task with Christ, His Name upon your lips, His Spirit in your souls. You go, my dear graduates, to a victory which will give God to America and .-Xmerica to God, a victory which only the Grace of God can win. Hlf Hrst graduation class of XYorld Wan' Numher Two is ready to leaye the protection ot' Catholic High School. The Bishop, Priests, Parents and lfriends have made generous sacrifices to assure this Catholic education for these young peopleg the faculty has sought in every way to endow them with a workalmle and satisfying knowledge which would guarantee their future. The deposit of truth has lween made, and the only interest that is asked is an adult lite in conformity with the principles of Catholic education and training. This year's class meets a strange and unnatural world. XX'ar, the like of which history has never suspected, is the order of the day. The cheapness of human life, the tragedy of lwroken homes, the necessity of real personal sacrifices, the unleashing of liase passions, the confusion ot' rhe irreligious, the demand for selt'-tiorgettiulness hecause of the common good, the sharp curtailment of ordinary pleasures in hrieti, the olwliteration of everything except the earning of a just and charitahle and conclusive peace this is the world ol- the 14,42 graduates. ' .-Xs we contemplate this distressing picture, we are encouraged hy the thought that the graduates ofa Catholic high school have heen prepared to meet every emergency. These young people have lieen taught God's place and God's providence, they know their own powers and limita- tions, the incalculalvle value ot' their immortal souls has heen their daily lesson, the hriefness of life and the length of eternity is a realism to them. They are prepared to face today's world or any day's world, for they have lween taught to huild on the unchanging and immutalmlc prin- ciples ot' their Christ-given religion. They are ready these graduates of the Class of M42 to do their country's hidding, to safeguard and ensure a Christian civilization, and in the doing of this to save their souls they will win the final and the real victory.
