How strange these words of Christ sound today in this afflicted world! With almost every nation on the face of the globe involved in a gigantic struggle for liberty and justice, peace indeed seems very far distant. But Christ's promise is not an idle one 3 we know that eventually that peace which the world cannot give will come, for Christ has told us so. Perhaps we, the youth of America, may be the means of once more establishing peace and freedom to the world. Already, several graduates of Catholic High have laid down their lives for their country. Countless others are serving in the armed forces, while still others are employed in governmental workshops. Women, too, have responded to their country's call by joining the anny of Red Cross Nurses or by filling vacancies left by men. These young Americans are fighting for justice, for freedom, for those ideals expressed by the Founding Fathers in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution of the United States. Having been taught American ideals and the virtues of good citizenship here at Catholic High, we, the Seniors of the Class of 1942, are about to step into this whirlpool of life Thus in publishing our annual, the fifth edition of PRIDWEN, we have attempted to show how these ideals and virtues of good citizenship have been instilled through the daily activities and experiences of school life. With these Christian principles and demo- cratic ideas of government, we go forth with confidence, knowing that they will serve as beacons to point the way for us over the rocky reefs and turbulent waves of this storm- swept, chaotic world. In future years as we page from cover to cover of this book, we feel that though the monster of war, with its tragedy and horror, was ever present throughout our last year of high school, many pleasant memories and happy incidents will be recalled and relived again. l , '31 al' 'A' ak if ir i' 'A' ir 'A' 'A' 'k if i' ,5 N -x x . You are anxious, deeply anxious, are you not ahout the future? Of' course you are. You and your countrymen have good reason to he concerned. lfor, to he carefree in such an hour as this is the prerogative of infants and fools, when peace is gone and men are living as though the Prince of Peace had never come, with your natural patrimony exhausting itself on war, with mankind seandalized at nian's in- humanity to man, with youth's rightful hopes hlasted and your whole American heritage in jeopardy. ln such an hour you are thinking hard, pondering a predicament which is yours to solve though it is not of your making. lfalse prophets and false ways, repudiating the hlaster's way, leave to your generation a heritage of havoc, and you are rightly indignant. A challenge to your fortitude, therefore, if ever there was one, confronts you on your lluarz 10 i :ggi ' 1 4 5 , i graduation day, the like of which, in importance and intensity, you have never heard or read almout. ln spite of our ingrained Christian alihorrence of war, in spite of our ahiding Christian love for our every fellow- man in the world, the fact is plain for any clear-sighted man to see that, in the present circumstances, the very continuance of our Catholic way of life in .-Xmeriea our freedom to offer sacrifice, our freedom to preach and to hear the word of God, our freedom to administer and to receive the Sacraments, our freedom to have Catholic schools-'drfarm, the very endurance of this freedom is now wrapped up in a military victory for the l'nited States. This victory will come, hut it will not come easily. You go now to your task with Christ, His Name upon your lips, His Spirit in your souls. You go, my dear graduates, to a victory which will give God to America and .-Xmerica to God, a victory which only the Grace of God can win. The Bishop, Priests, Parents and lfriends have made generous sacrifices to assure this Catholic education for these young peopleg the faculty has sought in every way to endow them with a workalmle and satisfying knowledge which would guarantee their future. The deposit of truth has lween made, and the only interest that is asked is an adult lite in conformity with the principles of Catholic education and training. This year's class meets a strange and unnatural world. XX'ar, the like of which history has never suspected, is the order of the day. The cheapness of human life, the tragedy of lwroken homes, the necessity of real personal sacrifices, the unleashing of liase passions, the confusion ot' rhe irreligious, the demand for selt'-tiorgettiulness hecause of the common good, the sharp curtailment of ordinary pleasures in hrieti, the olwliteration of everything except the earning of a just and charitahle and conclusive peace this is the world ol- the 14,42 graduates. ' .-Xs we contemplate this distressing picture, we are encouraged hy the thought that the graduates ofa Catholic high school have heen prepared to meet every emergency. These young people have lieen taught God's place and God's providence, they know their own powers and limita- tions, the incalculalvle value ot' their immortal souls has heen their daily lesson, the hriefness of life and the length of eternity is a realism to them. They are prepared to face today's world or any day's world, for they have lween taught to huild on the unchanging and immutalmlc prin- ciples ot' their Christ-given religion. They are ready these graduates of the Class of M42 to do their country's hidding, to safeguard and ensure a Christian civilization, and in the doing of this to save their souls they will win the final and the real victory. May God strengthen them and keep them close to vi Wiefdesq Him always. limit: ll FM LTY Xlwrlmux' l'ugn'm- XILIVIL' w I.H.Nl., I1I'n'fL'a't mmf tllNl'Il'lH1k l1QlNl1II1lIlfiINIiCiYf ut' .iuriw um' ut wlncll xx wx'xt1m1 pzlxwx flu' lzlrr L'HlT1k'l'N alt wlm'l1xlu'1x CIILILILIUAI nluwv xI1lI'LfllI'L'l' l'1ll'I'k'H qlml lmum .Xlw-I, tml :ww xtmlvnrw :lr Calrlwlxu lhglm, :ww-lu' rm rurs IVHH1 flu' pI'L'fQx'l llf xl1wlpli11v,5urv1' Nl. fwlvttv, R.S,Xl. Flowers in all their pristine glory are ready to be culled. What an abundance of them! Here may be found the sunflower of faith, the ivy of hope, the peony of love of God, the carnation of obedience, the rose of love of our neighbor, the forget-me-not of piety, the violet of humility, the daffodil of industry, the narcissus of truthfulness, and the lily of purity. All these fair blossoms, now in the height of their glory, we lay at the feet of Our Lady, Queen of Peace, and her Son, the Prince of Peace, to be blessed before being sent to markets far and near, for the purpose of scattering seeds of peace and harmony, and adorning the world and making it a better and brighter place in which to live. Anietrruio. just as in fiction, our first chapter was devoted to acquainting ourselves with the new life we were to lead and with our new environment. At last a much-needed vacation was at hand, as also was a promotion-promotion to Sophomorehood. S0l'HOMORESl A funny word, but after our first appellation, Freshies, anything could be tolerated now. This year found Cha tel, II us wiser than ever. The manner in which we mastered all our subjects was superb. Practically the entire P school knew just what our status was. VVe even managed to look smarter than the Freshmen, a thing very diflicult to do. A party in the cafeteria opened our social roster. Participation in various activities kept us quite busy. Musical talent blos- somed forth. Recognition in football and basketball showed the upperclassmen that we, too, were on the high school map. All in all, we were feeling very much at home, when suddenly-another vacation and another promotion. jumoas, at last! Our entire class was so disheartened when school opened one month later than usual in the fall of '41 on Cha ner III account of the infantile paralysis epidemic, so this year more than ever we were ready to show our hidden I intelligence. ln the commercial Held we did quite well, and became the people in the news when speed and accuracy was our goal. Acting ability was exhibited in the school play, Peg O' My Heart. Musical talent continued to grow. A few-journalists, too, appeared on the list ofstarl' members of both school publications, our athletic prowess was brought to the notice of the public in sports- football, basketball and track. The junior Prom held in the Civic Club closed the social activities for the year. Then preparations for the final exams began, l 'I ain vacation and promotion, this time to nllignified Seniors. P'-Q 1. PAGE 44 44An Army on Its Knees to Keep An Army on Its Feet HE hell 'resounds through the building at Catholic High. It is noon, and from every classroom a volume of prayer asccnds to the Great Throne on High, and is wafted back swiftly like a shot-in-the-arm to a soldier on guard in Iceland, to a marine on watch in the Pacific, to a sailor alert for submarines. Unconsciously the soldier stands a little straighter, looks a trifle more determined, as he seems to hear an encouraging whisper in his ears, Keep your chin up! Victory is not far off! This slight reinforcement may mean more to the fighting man than anyone will ever know. It may give him the courage he needs to keep on trying. The practice, begun this year at Catholic High, of saying the Angelus every day for our men in the service has, without doubt, the same effect that a volley of death-dealing lead would have on the enemy, because it gives the spirit to fire that volley with energy. Moreover, the Angelus gains for us a more powerful ally than any on earth: Mary, the Mother of God. Through Mary's intercession, therefore, and through the gallant men who every- where uphold our Hag, these prayers are offered daily in ardent supplication for a speedy victory and an everlasting peace. N A WORLD such as we live in today, where nothing is heard hut war and rumors of war, the Junior Red Cross Council has taken an active part in various projects for our boys in the service. These have been outlines, through the course of the year, by the officers of the different Chapters. Several representatives from each homeroom joined in making scrapbooks to entertain the soldiers, in making letter portfolios-handy little gadgets in which to keep emnrespondenee and private papers, and in knitting afghans for our service men. Une laudable f act about the Red Cross work done hy the students is the personal enjoyment. eaeh individual seemed to get out of it. Twelve members of the Council were present at the National Convention of the Red Cross whieh was held in Harrisburg this year. James Carroll, president of the Junior Council, presided at the morning session. This group of Junior Red Cross Members is busy making scraphooks for the soldiers. Lefl Io Riyhl,F1'rs1 Row: H. Rt-11 Russ oiit't- mort- thrillttl l,AtilC tit .FQ the fans with a long run. This time he cut off tackle, reversed his field, and raced down the sidelines 80 yards to a touchdown. The third contest of the campaign found the Crusaders chalking up a 20 to 0 triumph over a strong Coal Township eleven. A lateral pass from Eddie Trees to Ben Russ, which covered 60 yards, accounted for one of the six-pointers and provided the crowd with the most brilliant play of the evening. With Ben Russ on the sidelines indefinitely because of a hand injury, fleetfooted Rudy Tezak became the spearhead of the Crusader attack. He ran rings around opposing linemen in the Chester Catholic game to lead the team to a 34 to 7 win. Diminutive Rudy ran 67, 65, 15, and 10 yards to score all but one of the Crusader touchdowns. ' 1 On a mud-covered, water-filled field, the Farina men reached their peak when they defeated Lancaster Catholic High School. The Crusader line opened tremendous holes for their backfield mates, Johnny Sinkovitz, Keith Coale, and Rudy Tezak, to go galloping through. When the game was over the score stood at 46 to 7. The toughest battle on the schedule took place on November 7. Mt. Carmel Catholic came to McDevitt Field with an unbeaten team and provided the Crusaders with stern opposition. Co-captain Eddie Trees completed 10 out of 15 passes to account for all the Crusader touchdowns. The visitors scored late in the game but were soundly beaten, 27 to 6. Hershey Industrial suffered the next defeat at the hands of C. H. S. on November 15. The Crusaders scored shortly after the kickoff on Johnny Russ' recovery of a Hershey fumble over the goal-line, and then went on to rack up four more six-pointers. The final tally was 32 to 0. Middletown High invaded McDevitt field for thc annual Thanksgiving Day game which resulted in another victory for the Crusaders. Ben Russ returned to action after being out .. -v,.,...,.,P 7, for over a month and sparked the team to a 31 to 0 triumph. , Delone Catholic played host to C. H. S. at McSherrystown in the last game of the regular schedule. Eddie Trees ran 90 yards behind brilliant blocking to thrill the fans with the longest Crusader run of the season. The reserves played almost half the time, but still the score reached 31 to 0. Because of their undefeated record, the Crusaders made arrangements to.meet West Catholic of Philadelphia on December 7 for the State Catholic Championship. A large crowd of 1500 persons journeyed from Harris- burg to Philadelphia to cheer the boys to victory. However, the Philly gridiron machine ripped the Crusaders' defense to shreds and smacked down their offense as they ground out a 31 to 0 win. Led by Dillion, halfback, and Willis, quarterback, they scored almost at will and except for some great playing by Sinkovitz, Trees, Trephan and John Russ, the final figures would have been much greater. Eddie Trees got off many good punts and several good passes, although rushed con- tinually. He was the only Crusader back to gain much ground, and on several occasions stopped West Catholic from scoring with his hard tackling. Johnny Sinkovitz with his sensational line backing up, Johnny Russ with his good de- fensive play at left end, and Johnny Treplian with his vicious tackling of punt receives, were standouts in the Crusaders' cause. Despite this defeat, Catholic High's record was the best ever had during a regular season. Nine straight opponents were bowled over. making it the first undefeated and untied team in the history of the school. Much credit for this brilliant performance must go to Coach Ralph Farina and Assistant Coach Joe Settino. With many good players, headed by Captain Johnny Sinkovitz, returning next year will see the star of Catholic High rise still higher in the athletic world. Trephan was a triple winner, as he captured first place in the shotput, discus and 100-yard dash. Other first-place winners were Tezak in the pole-vault, Salinger in the 220-yard dash, Hinncnkamp in the 440-yard dash, Russ in the broad jump, and McCarthy in the javelin throw. The final count was 7533 for Catholic, 4-'llfff for Academy and ll for Middletown. On the following Saturday, six men represented the Speed Demons at the Villanova Interscholastic Invitation Meet and scored 10 points to finish seventh among 18 schools and third among seven C'atholic teams. Against some of the best high school competition in the East, John Trephan took fourth in the discus and shotput., Frank Hinnenkamp and Rudy Tezak tied for fourth in the quarter mile and pole- vault respectively, George Salinger captured fifth in the 220-yard dash, and tl1e relay team finished fourth in their event. Next on the schedule came Gettysburg. The C'oAeH FL1eK1NeI1:1c 14 and were handed a 6635 to 4924 setback by the Little Bullets of Gettysburg High. Four boys, George Salinger, Frank Hinnen- kamp, .lolm Trephan and Rudy Tezak scored 41 of C'atholic's 4915 points, but received little help from their teammates. Relay Team Gains Recognition Special honors went to the relay team of the Speed Demons this year for they came through with some outstanding performances. Composed of George Salinger, Sophomore speedster, Rudy Tezak, Mercury-footed dash man, Anthony Petrasic, small but swift Junior, and Frank Hinnenkamp, tall, lanky anchor man, it racked up several important victories. The first of these victories was at the pre- viously mentioned Shippensburg Invitation Meet where this fast foursome coasted into an easy triumph against good opposition. On April 25 these boys traveled to Philadel- phia to take part in the Penn Relays, at which the cream of the country's athletes always perform, and captured first place in their event. For this they received gold medals and a large plaque. The victory was a personal one for Coach Earl Fliekinger who, only a few days before, had been seriously injured when struck by a javelin at practice. However, his team knew how badly he wanted to win and did not disappoint him. At Boyertown, on May 6, the Speed Demons, with .Iolmny Trephan taking Petrasic's place, entered the quarter and half-mile relays and won their heats in both events, for which they were awarded plaques and silver medals. The regular mile team finished third in their heat but it was the fastest one of the day, so they also captured third in the finals. Une of the best performances of the year by the mile foursome took place at the Villa- nova lnvitation Meet. Here, in competition with ten schools that were all either first or second at the Penn Relays, the Speed Demons ran a sensational race and finished fourth, only 10 yards behind the winner, St. Thomas More of Philadelphia. A new school record of 3 minutes, 33 seconds was set by the Speed Demons at Villanova as Rudy Tezak and Frank Hinnenkamp, who picked up 20 yards on the anchor lap, each had 52 second quarters. Thus another track season comes to a close and once again Catholic High is near the top. Although the squad this year was the smallest in the history of the school, yet it compiled the best record ever made, which shows that it is quality, not quantity, that counts. Soon you and your classmates will take different roads, and it may be years before some of you meet again. School days do not last forever-and when they are past, memories are kept warm by the photographs of friends and pals of the classroom and campus. Your ehums should have a personality portrait of You, and you will prize one of theirs in return. In a year or so, you will be glad you took this means of keeping alive the memories of your school days. And the home folks will always cherish a portrait of the turning point in your life. This studio is the headquarters for the best photographic work and the doors are open to the students of The Catholic High School and their friends.
