I , GILBERT STOUFFER The first Academy gathering of this organization was held in Seiler Hall, a building on the old campus. The purpose of the gentlemen who organized the Adelphian Society was twofold: to promote enthusiasm for Princeton University and to organize a Christian Association for good will in the Academy. This society has grown to be one ofthe most helpful organizations in the School. Mr. Carl Cassara is the advisor. PAGE 46

Standing, l. to r.: ROBERT SHEAFFER, Raman: ROGER SMITH, Ramanj DONALD HOLMES, Raman: FRED SPOTTS, Greekg BURTON WEISS, Greek. In 1946 through the efforts of Mr. John R. Diehl and Mr. George D. Willard, the annual Academy tradition of debating that had lain dormant for several years was renewed. In that year the burning issue was Universal Military Training and the Greeks under Mr. Diehl were successful in defeating the opposition. Frederic Schiffman of the winning team won the gold medal given to the outstanding debater. Again in 1947 the Greeks won the intra-school debate, when they successfully defended the topic concerning socialized medicine. In that year, Burt Weiss of the Affirmative Team received the medal. Early in February the Negative Team-the Greeks-coached by Mr. Diehl and the Affirma- tive Team-the Romans-advised by Mr.Wil1ard began to prepare for the annual Greek-Roman debate of May 6. The topic chosen this year was Resolved, That the Federal Government should require arbitration of labor disputes in all basic American industries. PAGE 48
