FEAGAN His life was gentle, and the elements So mixed in him that Nature might stand up And say to all the world THIS WAS A MAN! - from Julius Caesar - For many years Harrington resi- dents have appreciated your active participation in civic, educational, and religious affairs. In the year of your retirement from forty-one years of service in public education, we - your students of today and yesterday - take this opportunity to thank you. Your guidance and understanding not only in your vocation but also in your avocations have earned you a place of highest esteem in all our hearts. We hope that you leave with memo- ries that are as fond of us as our mem- ories are fond of you. It is with a deep admiration and affection that we regretfully say fare- well to - a beloved teacher, a patient counsellor, a dedicated principal, and a sympathetic friend. Our world of today demands that we be persons who possess strong minds, great hearts, true faith, and ready hands. It is in our beloved teacher and principal that we find all these attributes. Each student who has been one of his fold can never forget the class lectures, the office conferences, and the many on-the-spot talks in the halls. His concern, his desire for knowledge, his willing hands, his wise counsel, and his open heart will long be remembered. His interest in his students and his eagerness to help them have endeared him to all who have come under his influence. 19 mmtsh John Abbott presents ruler to former math teacher. Five new records went into | the books, four of them by Har- j rington athletes who captured j nine of the 13 events. Harrington accumulated 73 points enroute to its walkaway win. Millsboro finished second with 36. followed by Bridgeville 33, Dver Air Base 16, Rehoboth 14, Milton 9!j. Selbyville 8, John M. Clayton 5, and Lord Balti- more and Greenwood O. The Lions produced two of the meet's double winners in Bob Smith and Randy Knox en- route to their third conference meet success. Yesterday’s suc- cess put the retiring leg on the championship trophy. Smith streaked to victory in the 440 and 880. establishing new meet standards in both. His 54.2 time in the 440 erased the 54.8 set by Millsboro's Bill Bak- er in 1861. He traveled the 880 in 2:06 9, clipping more than a second off the 2:10.1 chalked up by Harrington's Harry Knotts in 1961. Knox notched successes in the javelin and broad jump. He threw the javelin 144 feet, 2 in- ches, and soared 19 feet, 7V4 in- ches in the broad jump. Other Harrington re c o r d j breakers were Frank Cain in I the pole vault and the Lions' mile relay team of Barry Fry. Richard Black, Dennis Regers and Smith. Cain topped the bar at 10 feet, 11 inches, surpassing the 10-6 he shared with teammate George Bonniwell in last year's j conference meet. The rel a y quartet sliced more than six I seconds off the old 3:54 mark of | Millsboro's 1961 squad, cover- ing the mile distance in 3:47.4. The other new record was achieved by Bridgeville's Terry' Bowden, who cleared the high jump bar at 5 foot. 11 in c h e s. smashing the 5-9 shared by Joe Hoebee of Milton in 1960 and Harrington's George Pfeiffer in '61. Bndgeville and Millsboro each captured two firsts. In addition to Bowden's sparkling jump, the Mustangs’ 880-yard relay team of Ken McDaniel, Filbert Lewis. Richard Freidel and Bob Calloway was triumphant in -1:39.4. Millsboro dented the win column on Dick Messick's dou- I ble in the 100 and 220. The Blue Devil sprint ace sped over the 100 in 10.5 and was clocked in the 220 in 23.6. Other Harrington winn ers were Dennis Rogers in the mile (4:54.6), Joe Taylor in the shot put (42-2), and Richard Black in the discus (110-4).
