The Yearbook Staff of Harrington High School Presents Table of Contents Preface -- ------------------ 3 Dedication ------------------- 4 Administration-----------------5 Faculty ---------------------- 8 Seniors-----------------------11 Juniors-----------------------32 Sophomores ------------------ 35 Freshmen----------------------38 Activities--------------------41 Athletics---------------------51 Organizations------------- 66 Farewell----------------------72 Foreword P rogress means to improve or to advance toward perfection. In the last five decades our school has grown from a single brick structure to a consolidated complex of buildings. Within these pages we will stow you the end product of these years. I n 1912 the Harrington Public School System occupied a single building on the western edge of town. This first building, which will be demolished at the end of this school year, has been in use con- tinually until now. However, this original building will live on in the minds of the students who attended there; and it will be pictorially preserved within these covers. T oday the Harrington Special School District consists of a consolidated Harrington Senior-Junior High School and Elementary School as well as the near-by West Harrington Elementary School. 50 Years of Progress T remendous progress has been made during these five decades, 1912-1962. Your memories guide you to what has happened in the past; these pages willshow you what we are doing today. It is our hope that you think ahead to the future and help plan for progress for to- morrow. Miss Carol Smith, Editor Mr. T. J. Brumbley, Adviser 3 Dedication We dedicate the 1963 Lion’s Roar to one who is himself dedicated to education. Archie A. Roanoke Physical Education Golden Greek and Friend Faculty Game Cuties Phakultee Loses To Girls The Lionesses of H.H.S. de- voured a tasty dish at the school Monday night. Before a packed house they downed a faculty team by a score of 32-16. The tutors, male and female, were a colorful group attired in platinum wigs and gay sashes. They used step ladders and piggy back rides but could sink only eight baskets. The losers’ cheerleaders: Miss John- son, Mrs. West and Mrs. Kirwan, added much to the evenings en- tertainment. The game was arranged to help pay for jackets for the girls’ team. It was such a howling success that it may develop into an annual event. Officials were Jim O’Neal, Bid Minner, Sheldon Hayman, and Albert W. Adams. Faculty players were Krame- das, Hawpe, Mock, Brumbley, Santo, Fry, O’Neal, Testerman and O'Neal. Some of these peo- ple have colorful nicknames but we won’t try to list those here. The girls were represented by Nielsen, Walls, McDonald, Smith, Blades, Coady. Thomas, Brown, Greer, Jack, Hitchens, Bennett, S. Hopkins and D. Hopkins. A t„ GOODBYE Only the word Itself Is quickly over: Only the letters will spin with the wind. Rippling the lilac-tides of summer, the clover - Rustling the magic we never again will find. Outlasting this goodbye we glibly speak Are dreams unquenched - a music we never heard ... Convulsing our hearts forever with a ghostly shriek, With moanings of memory that echo a lifetime-long. ’ - Walter Blackstock - It has been said that the world is a stage and the people merely actors upon it Oh, how true this is; and as the camera of life has been focused on our stage, we have found each student acting out a small part of his life. We are fortunate that our camera has captured one year of that role in pictures. For most of our actors, this year has been just one more stepping stone to another grade. However, to some - the seniors - it is one of the biggest steps in life, for this is the last scene in their high school years. These actors have much for which to thank their producers and directors. Many people have put forth their efforts to prepare these young people for the scenes that lie ahead. Yes. this annual has pictured a year at Harrington High School, but the camera of life will continue to focus in the future. Nevertheless, it is fortunate that the camera has recorded these events and activities which shall be remembered for many years to come. 72 To thine own self be true. -Shakespeare- PWJUPiV «F7 . -1' • •- • . • • ;V —arts -rr • i 'J -r . •?., V- • , ty ivC-. « - v • • ' . • . .
