golng to rlde twlce bv hlmself The next person to appear at the tlcket mndow was SAM MCGILL Sam bought three tlckets He was going to rxde wlth JOYCE LYNN ORAN and BETTY PIERCE I moved on to the merry go round There I saw BOBBIE JLNE MILLER and JOAN MONDAY They explamed that they had brought thelr chlldren to the carnlval and had been able to get no farther than that one r1de On my way to the next rlde I stopped to buy some cotton candy Workmg m that booth was PEGGY 'VIANIS As she was covered wlth candy I dldnt recognlze her for a m1nute She told me that DORIS PARRISH had just been by her booth on her way to the flrst a1d statlon She had fallen out of the swlngs and spralned her wrlst Gomg to the next booth I passed GENEVA HICKS Geneva IS now on Broadway She told me that she was starring next week ln Forever Alberta Geneva told me that she had seen NANCY HART selhng brooms outslde of her theater on a cold ra1ny evenlng She asked her ln to have a cup of coffee w1th her Nancy told her that she had lost all of her money on o1l wells m Texas Geneva took her to a restaurant where she had her flrst meal ln a week The owner turned out to be one of thelr old frlends DAVID MOODY DaVld not only let them have thelr meal on the house but offered Nancy a job as waltress When she found out that CON NIE LIVINGSTON and JEANIE WRIGHT were worklng there as chorus glrls she accepted the posltlon lmmedlately Whlle I was talklng to Geneva some one tapped me on the shoulder I turned around to flnd OMER PAINTER Omer was a professor of hlstory at the Unlverslty of Tennessee I 1nv1ted Omer to accompany me as I made my way around the Mldway We stopped to watch the show brought to you dxrectly from Hawau I seemed to remember some of the faces Yes lt was WANDA MILLER IVA SUE BRANAM DORIS JUNE ADKISSON and DIANA LAWSON They certalnly could hula even though they werent drrectly from Hawau The barker for thexr show was DON SCANDLYN I was surprlsed to see Don domg work of any kmd We walked on t1ll we came to the next attractlon a cowboy show In thls act we found JAMES HOOD shootlng cxgarettes out of BARBARA WESTS mouth Thls IS one attractlon Im afraxd we wont he able to use much longer We have already lost four glrls thrs way and the flfth one MARY ELLEN AHLER IS stxll 1n the hospltal Omer Sald that he had enjoyed the v1s1t but that he was due back at the Unlver slty I walked to the front entrance wlth h1m On the way back I notlced a crowd gathered around the lunch counter DAWN EDWARDS had just arnved wlth a few of her famous cakes and ples Each was flghtlng to be one of the few lucky ones to get hxs I stopped to see Dawn and she told me that she had just come back from her vacatlon in Callforma where LOIS EDWARDS was desxgnmg dresses ln a large dress shop owned by MARLENE GRAVES Dawn had heard whlle she was out on the coast that one of the large movle studlos had offered BETTY LOU HALL a fxve year contract But she had refused She was golng to make a trlp around the world wlth NANCY JARNIGAN and ANITA BAKER QAn1ta had her own yacht I The captaln of her large canoe was JOHNNY MACK GALLAGHER After leavlng Dawn I found myself bored agaln I decxded to grve the show to the next person I passed on the Mldway The lucky person was MIRIAM BOWMAN She was tickled plnk to flnd herself owner of THE LARGEST SHOW ON EARTH M1r1am followed me to my office where I gave her the ownershlp papers I hurrled from the grounds trlppmg over MARY CARTER and her cage of Boa Constrlctors I was out to flnd somethmg that would hold my lnterest I halled a cab and the drlver JOHN MCGHEE took me to the bus statlon where I bought a magazlne at a stand run by AGNES GARRISON and MONTANA HARVEY There was the bus' Once agaln I was on my way to parts unknown' MARGARET RHEA HUNLEY Prophet . . . . .
