golng to rlde twlce bv hlmself The next person to appear at the tlcket mndow was SAM MCGILL Sam bought three tlckets He was going to rxde wlth JOYCE LYNN ORAN and BETTY PIERCE I moved on to the merry go round There I saw BOBBIE JLNE MILLER and JOAN MONDAY They explamed that they had brought thelr chlldren to the carnlval and had been able to get no farther than that one r1de On my way to the next rlde I stopped to buy some cotton candy Workmg m that booth was PEGGY 'VIANIS As she was covered wlth candy I dldnt recognlze her for a m1nute She told me that DORIS PARRISH had just been by her booth on her way to the flrst a1d statlon She had fallen out of the swlngs and spralned her wrlst Gomg to the next booth I passed GENEVA HICKS Geneva IS now on Broadway She told me that she was starring next week ln Forever Alberta Geneva told me that she had seen NANCY HART selhng brooms outslde of her theater on a cold ra1ny evenlng She asked her ln to have a cup of coffee w1th her Nancy told her that she had lost all of her money on o1l wells m Texas Geneva took her to a restaurant where she had her flrst meal ln a week The owner turned out to be one of thelr old frlends DAVID MOODY DaVld not only let them have thelr meal on the house but offered Nancy a job as waltress When she found out that CON NIE LIVINGSTON and JEANIE WRIGHT were worklng there as chorus glrls she accepted the posltlon lmmedlately Whlle I was talklng to Geneva some one tapped me on the shoulder I turned around to flnd OMER PAINTER Omer was a professor of hlstory at the Unlverslty of Tennessee I 1nv1ted Omer to accompany me as I made my way around the Mldway We stopped to watch the show brought to you dxrectly from Hawau I seemed to remember some of the faces Yes lt was WANDA MILLER IVA SUE BRANAM DORIS JUNE ADKISSON and DIANA LAWSON They certalnly could hula even though they werent drrectly from Hawau The barker for thexr show was DON SCANDLYN I was surprlsed to see Don domg work of any kmd We walked on t1ll we came to the next attractlon a cowboy show In thls act we found JAMES HOOD shootlng cxgarettes out of BARBARA WESTS mouth Thls IS one attractlon Im afraxd we wont he able to use much longer We have already lost four glrls thrs way and the flfth one MARY ELLEN AHLER IS stxll 1n the hospltal Omer Sald that he had enjoyed the v1s1t but that he was due back at the Unlver slty I walked to the front entrance wlth h1m On the way back I notlced a crowd gathered around the lunch counter DAWN EDWARDS had just arnved wlth a few of her famous cakes and ples Each was flghtlng to be one of the few lucky ones to get hxs I stopped to see Dawn and she told me that she had just come back from her vacatlon in Callforma where LOIS EDWARDS was desxgnmg dresses ln a large dress shop owned by MARLENE GRAVES Dawn had heard whlle she was out on the coast that one of the large movle studlos had offered BETTY LOU HALL a fxve year contract But she had refused She was golng to make a trlp around the world wlth NANCY JARNIGAN and ANITA BAKER QAn1ta had her own yacht I The captaln of her large canoe was JOHNNY MACK GALLAGHER After leavlng Dawn I found myself bored agaln I decxded to grve the show to the next person I passed on the Mldway The lucky person was MIRIAM BOWMAN She was tickled plnk to flnd herself owner of THE LARGEST SHOW ON EARTH M1r1am followed me to my office where I gave her the ownershlp papers I hurrled from the grounds trlppmg over MARY CARTER and her cage of Boa Constrlctors I was out to flnd somethmg that would hold my lnterest I halled a cab and the drlver JOHN MCGHEE took me to the bus statlon where I bought a magazlne at a stand run by AGNES GARRISON and MONTANA HARVEY There was the bus' Once agaln I was on my way to parts unknown' MARGARET RHEA HUNLEY Prophet . . . . . CLASS PROPHECY About a week ago I found myself extremely rxch and bored Havmg more money than I knew what to do wlth I bought lock stock and barrel a carnnal that was passlng through the town I dlscovered I was travellng wlth a group of people that I was sure I had met somewhere before Then It came to me I knew the e people when I was a Senlor at Harrlman Hugh School and dldnt have a fur coat or a dlamond rlng to my name I declded to stroll around the grounds and talk to a few of my old classmates As I passed the fortune tellers tent I saw someone carrymg a huge crystal ball and mumbhng to herself It was EVA EVANS Whrle we talked Eva mentloned that JOANNE ELLIS was a cryfstal gazer for a show out West They kept ln touch through thelr Ill3glC crystal balls Comlng to the side shows I saw that SAI LY MEE was brlled as the only lrylng relatlve of Chief Settln Bull In the same tent I found DON BALLEW and BOBBY JONES dolng a juggllng act In the corner of the tent WINNIE PLEMENS was gettlng ready to walk across a plle of hot coals Leavmg the tent I heard some one cream Looklng up I saw KENNETH TAYLOR on top of the ferrls wheel TOMMY JEINKINS was rldmg wlth hlm and was rocklng the seat As the wheel came around agaln I notlced that Kenneth got off Slnce I was hungry I made my way to a near by hot dog stand RUTH TURPIN walled on me and stopped to talk a few mlnutes She told me that when she left Walnut H1ll JEANE RUMAGE had opened a large Super Market there Thls competttzon had proved too much for JIMMY AL STIN and he had closed h1s market and was workmg for BILI PRYOR Blll owned a flllmg statlon on Roane Street When I flmshed eatmg I saw some one down on his hands and knees s1ft1ng through the sawdust and sayxng over and over to hlmself They could have dropped some around here somewhere It was FRED KILLEFFER I asked Fred lf he would llke to go to see the Mlnstrel Show wlth me After I explalned that I would buy the tlckets Fred accepted The show opened wlth PHIL HARRIS and hrs DIXIE Land Band Thls was one of the show s biggest attractlons DICK BURNS was stlll playlng louder than anyone else lPh1l should flre hlm and use one of the tramed seals 1n hls place J The vocallst came next It was none other than CHARLES STILES who sang Save That Confederate Money., Boys the South Shall Rlse Agaln Next on the program was JOAN YEARY who was now a talented plamst She had reslgned from her posltlon at Carnegle Hall to 10lI'l our show The next performance had to be canceled because ALVIN WILLIS had fallen earlrer that day and had broken h1S arm so he couldnt play the banjo Between acts SUE HILD and EMMA JO HONEYCUTT sold popcorn Wllh a prlze ln every bag I bought a bag and my prlze was an autographed plcture of JACK HUTCHISON who was now playlng professlonal football We left the Mlnstrel and walked around to the motorcycle races The dare devll of the track was none other than BOYD JONES As Boyd raced around the track I heard some one behlnd me yelllng Faster' Faster' It was AILEENE EVANS I heard that Alleene had to qu1t the racmg buslness be cause she ran out of cars By thls txme I needed a mlnute of rest so I trudged to my offrce on the edge of the grounds There slttmg on the steps of my traller were JOHN LANGLEY and MERRILL BOTKIN They wanted a Job I told them to report to the front tlcket offlce where BILLY BRANAM was ln charge Bllly put them to work makmg change ln the Penny Arcade As I sat down IH my office to rest there was a knock on my door It was JOHN BROWN who was the Mayor of the falr c1ty He sand that he had come to welcome me to the town Wrth hlm was another clty OfflCl3I W A CROWDER who was now Chlef of Pollce I thanked the gentlemen for comlng and gave them passes for themselves and thelr f3mlIlCS I saw then that I would get no rest so I left to explore the Mldway Passlng the Tunnel Of Love I saw JOHN BALLARD buylng two tlckets I wanted to see who he would nde with but I dlscovered he was just Y ' . .
