It was a beautiful day of Indian Summer. The sun was warm and lazy. Leaves of red and gold hung on the trees. I drove down the highway, watching the beauty around me, scarcely aware of the flashing milestones. As I drove on, the numbers became more notice- able, began to take on interest. One hundred eighty-seven; one hundred eighty-six; eighty-five; — four! What did they measure? Where did they start? Where did they end? What do milestones mean? I thought of home, school, work, all starting places. I thought of the numbers going down, down, as I neared my destination. I thought how fortunate I was that skillful people engineered the road, marking so clearly the way. Then I knew what the milestones meant. Others have charted the course for me to follow safely. I can travel the highway because others have gone before me. I can choose my destination because of others. All of us who are part of Whitney travel to- gether, depending on each other, toward our goals. We rejoice together as we pass each new milestone. — Susonnoh West M Hpspsr B f ■•I 1 s 1 m.
