Memories — they are the substance of his- tory: world, local, personal. Man wants to be remembered. The ancient Egyptians painted the routines of their lives on the walls of their tombs and chiseled them into the stone col- umns of their temples. The Greeks left the exquisite Parthenon. The great cathedrals re- call the struggle for freedom of religious thought and man ' s patient labor. Creations of the artist ' s genius through the ages are care- fully preserved in the art museums of the world. The Smithsonian Institution shelters in- ventive achievements. Relics of the Spanish inquisition and the rows of white crosses on the battlefields of the world silently register man ' s inhumanity to man when people failed to respect each other. My farewell to the class of 1965 includes these words of John Ruskin, " It is better to be nobly remembered than nobly born. " — C eona Chetister Assistant Principal Living with Memories! Today you Whitney- ites are sixteen, seventeen, and eighteen. In almost a breath you will be sixty, seventy, eighty! Whose memories will you want then? Wouldn ' t it be fun to borrow the memories of famous people? Think what it might be like to have the memories of the first Queen Elizabeth for a week or so, then trade them for the memories of Queen Elizabeth II. After that, maybe the memories of Elizabeth of Bible days would also be wonderful to review. Impossible, you say? Well, not so impos- sible. After all, libraries of the world have stored the past; books stand waiting for us to share memories great and small. Happy memories to all Whitneyites! — Susannali West Associate Principal
