Needle Trades shops began with one sewing ma-
chine, one class, one teacher for twenty-six students,
including sophomores, iuniors, seniors. Needle trades
began in i938 in the old vocational building then located
on Michigan cmd Madison Avenues. ln i939 when the
school moved into the new building, the Singer Company
supplied seven power machines.
At this time all the needle trades girls wore uniforms
of blue cotton with a white flap at the collar. A primary
iob for all girls was working at'Steins.
ln i956-57 Whitney employs three teachers to in-
struct the three classes. Post graduates may enter the
needle trades course.

A definite existence of shorthand is discovered in the
century preceding the Christian era. The first modern
system was printed in London in 1588.
The first recorded attempt to invent a typewriter is
found in 1714 in records of the British patent office. The
first practical instrument was made in 1868.
Office practice is one of the oldest shops in the
vocational program for girls, having been established in
1934, at the Old Vocational High School. There were
approximately 100 who were enrolled in 1939 as sopho-
mores, iuniors and seniors. We now have 215.
